Well, in case I do, that's the work of one Hisashi Tenmyouya, an artist whose "neo-nihonga" art style produced this fantastic little glob of fantasticness back in '05. Oh, and it recently sold for the Hong Kong dollar's equivalent of 600,000 USD, at a Christie's International auction.
...Hoooly crap. I started to post this in strict nerd appreciation for ancient Japanese Gundam art, but check out the Christie's Lot Notes section. This is pure gold:
To diligently serve a traditional motif with pop cultural futuristic form, the tasteful vacuity in composition and the ostensibly flat surface is created by the simplicity in technique and medium that substrate as a precondition connotation in exhibiting Hisashi Tenmyouya's contemporary rendering of academicism. [...] The impecability and cleanliness of these philosophies are intricately woven in Tenmyouya's pre-planned ordered space and outlined in crisp elegance with his ritualistic brushstrokes. His delicate sensitivity towards thin brushstroke application is not just a mere technical process but in greater sense, a reflection of his calm diligence in reverting back to his traditional roots; each brushstroke awakening his Japanese spirit.
"Gold" isn't an intentional pun, just 'cause the background of the painting is gold leaf, mind you. It's just that I haven't seen such splendid academic cock-jockeying since the last time I glanced through my old Literary Criticisms textbook.Unglaze your eyes for the totally straight-faced dissertation on the vital importance of the Gundam univese in modern Japanese culture. Rock on!
