'Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt' is Gainax's new anime

'Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt' is Gainax's new anime photo

The details are in on Gainax's new anime and...it's not what I expected.

The name? Pansuto, which is short for Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, as announced by the newest edition of Newtype. 

The characters? Two angels, the blond idol-ish Panty and the goth loli Stocking.

The mission? To fight "ghosts" on Earth.

The creators? A total assload of veteran staffers from such productions as Gurren-Lagann, FLCL, Diebuster.

Hm. Don't know quite what to think about this whole thing, except that the art style looks rad, and that Panty probably got her name from the shape of her gun barrel, and that Stocking wears a single stocking. From the looks of it this might not be the "1930s Britain" thing they were hiring out for, so there's a chance of something else in the pipeline (steampunk Evangelion!), but that's just pure speculation on my part.

Um. I heard about the show a few days ago and thought well okay maybe it won't be that bad.

But if that is what the show looks like(i.e the banner image) Then I think I'll pass. I don't really want a anime that looks like the power puff girls.

Actually, the short title is "pansuto"　パンスト, not "pantsuto" パンツと.

Well...it might be better then Hanamaru Kindergarten...not that it was a bad show, but you kinda expect a lot more from Gainax, ya know?

I dunno; it sounds rad to me. I'm liking the designs - they kinda look like Gainax took the look of the Gurren Lagann characters when they got really intense, then chibi-fied it, then threw in some crazy-ass ideas of the kind where they start talking one day about "Haha, what if THAT was in a series?" and six months later they have storyboards for it. Gainax is kinda more robust with their animation principles and exaggeration than a lot of other production houses, so I'm looking forward to it. I sat through all of Hanamaru Kindergarten hoping it would provide some of the cool I can sense in this series from just a poster.

I was knew the title was a tongue in cheek kind of thing, and not the obvious ecchi series people were expecting. I was sold with just the staff involved, but after seeing the art style I'm hella excited.

Just watch episode 7 of Yucie to see what awesomeness Imaishi can do with a magical girl type of story. (You can definitely ignore the rest of the series FYI)

This is total disappointment, where is my hot 2-d girls in pantyhose's and gartered stockings? Not some wanna be power puff girls which isn't bad but for a company like gainax which can do so much better. Epic Fail.

Man, some otaku can be such freaking pessimists. I mean, if it looked like shit, then yeah, I could understand the complaints, but as an aspiring illustrator, I am just utterly drawn to that bold style. It reminds me of those Gurren Lagann cut-ins between commercials, but chibified. If anything, it'll catch people's attention, something most generic anime styles fail to do.

Still, while it's caught my attention, I'll have to wait until I see some more plot and substance.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought they looked like Powerpuff Girls. I think I'll let someone else test out the first few episodes.

@ Gee-man: I like the bold style too, to be honest. It's graphically appealing. I'm just kind of in that initial prejudicial limbo where it doesn't *look* like what I'm used to, so my instinctive reaction is to pan it. Even though I liked the Powerpuff girls. I just feel uneasy.

Nice art style, but I still think its a bad idea. Aren't we supposed to be growing the anime market too? Just mention this title to non fans, and they'll more tha likely walk the other way.

I guess this is more aimed at fans, but I'll put my attentions elsewhere. For if this is all that Gainax can drag from their imagination, I think they need a vacation outside of japan, to get some badly needed creative inspiration.

Oh. I heard it had to do with panties and stockings, I thought it was a fanservice show. But seeing the magazine scan, this actually looks really cool. When will this be airing?

It'll be great. Come on, it's freakin' Gainax! FLCL came out of nowhere, too, and I was initally very put-off by how hyper it was. Love it now, though. If there's one trademark of Gainax shows, it's that they never make a lick of sense the first time you watch them. The only exception is Nadia, as far as I know. But I never watched Gurren Lagann.

And I for one loved the Powerpuff girls. It had great writing and mercilessly parodied everything Craig McCracken could think of (he wrote most of the scripts, right?).

For everyone who is seeing Genndy Tartakovsky and Craig McCracken I have a reminder: Their work is heavily influenced by Japanese pop and poster artists from the 70's. So it isn't wannabe, it's a ressurection.
