So say friends at ICv2 who report Aurora Publishing's launch of a josei imprint LuvLuv this coming January. The first title to come out will be Kanae Hazuki's Voices of Love.
Josei, of course, is the big sister of the more dominant shoujo manga, which features stories for lovers of relationship development, bishounen, and romantic resolutions. Josei, however, targets those over 18 who want more than just stammering confessions and blush-producing indirect (and direct) kisses.
Aurora Publishing is the American subsidiary of Japan's preeminent josei publisher, Ohzora, and from Ohzora's josei assets, it chose Voices of Love for LuvLuv's first release. Voices of Love is reportedly an anthology of steam (there's that Explicit Content sticker on the cover); the story which gives the compilation its title stars a young teacher and his 18-year-old pupil. Who just happen to be neighbors. Let your imagination fill in the rest of the inevitable graphic details while waiting for January to roll around.
The second title will be out in March, Oda Mitsuki's Real Love (another anthology). May 2008 is the date for the third, Hana Aoi's scrumpliciously titled Love for Dessert.
And in the event that someone objects, saying josei isn't all about mature rabu-rabu, lemme concur (Kozueko Morimoto's Gokusen is josei after all, albeit not an Ohzora title).
With a blush that rivals the hibiscus outside my window, I put my hand up for wanting to get paws on Voices of Love. Anyone else want to join me?
But on the other hand: it's funny how they talk about there being more mature sexual content in josei manga when you consider what it's like picking up a copy of Sho-Comi or HanaYume these days. Anyone who says girls don't like naughty comics is a liar ;)
