"The Case for K-ON!" The Unsung Hero of K-ON!

5:00 AM on 04.08.2010

[Editors Note: This is a promoted Community Blog, written by one of our readers in response to April's Monthly Musing topic. If you would like to see your own Cblog on the front page, warm up your keyboard and write something awesome! ~Jon Snyder]

Originally I was going to take this seriously and try and defend K-ON! However no matter what I wrote down I couldn't help feeling it was something that had already been said and been said better then I can present it. So instead I have decided to present the secret to K-ON!'s success (and also my waifu) Sawako Yamanaka!

Everywhere I go on the otakunet, I see all this moeblob hate and its always aimed at the 5 band members of K-ON! in particular Yui, Mio, and Azusa, who also tend to be the 3 most popular characters among the OMG K-ON! BEST ANIME EVER!!! Crowd. I have a theory behind this that needs to represented.

K-ON! has been misunderstood by fans and foes alike. Many an enemy of the series has pointed out that
K-ON! girls lack depth saying things along the lines of "They are nothing more then a moeblob mess! What could possibly be attractive about a show that features them?" Fans unable to comprehend what is not to like will use moments from the show such as Mio tripping on stage and exposing her panties or being scared witless as an example of K-ON!'s awesome, leaving non-fans confused with how such things could ever be worth watching. I'm here to tell you that both parties are correct, and clear up this confusion once and for all.

Sawako Yamanaka is the glue that holds
K-ON! together! Without her K-ON! is neither funny nor moe. At least not moe in the sense that a fan should ever use the term. Point and case:

Mio On her own she is just and ordinary shy girl. Nothing more then the friend of Ritsu who wants to start a band that would never even exist without Sawako.

Ritsu She is a ball of energy that bounces back and forth with no real purpose. With the guidance of Sawako she is a capable band leader and drumer.

Mugi She is just a innocent rich girl with no exposure to the outside world around her. Thanks to Sawako she has been exposed to working through the process of making a successful school band and cosplay something she would likely never have access to if not for Sawako.

Yui Exists to lightning rod for the sake of all other characters against the hordes of evil moeblob haters. No moeblob character can compete with the moe that is Yui. (not even Susan Boyle)

Azusa Every hero needs a sidekick Yui is no exception.

In closing the true champion of
K-ON! is one that lurks in the shadows making costumes and giving the context needed to make the members of After School Tea Time the hit moeblob goddesses they have become for all including herself to enjoy.

Shes way to old for me but she is pretty awesome. Azu-Nyan will always be my love though
Bonus points for glasses.
Finally, someone sticking up for Metal-sensei.
I just love the fact that she used to dress like a member of Slipnot. I laughed my ass off when they did that whole montage about her teenaged years.

I don't know if she's necessarily critical to the show, but she definitely adds a lot. The "oh, I want to dress you all up!" thing bugged me a little, but I can't really complain because I know a lot of people are actually like that- my mother being one of them -__-.
@Karen Gellender: Sawako may not be critical in the sense of the plot. But for the sake of the humor of the show I can't see it being the same without her. I think the same is true for other similarly structured shows as well such as Lucky Star and Azumanga.

In Lucky Star The MMORPG playing sensei and Konata's cousin Yui are two of my favorite characters. Yui road raging to Inital D music is easily a top favorite moment from lucky star. (and I haven't even seen Inital D) As for Azumanga.. I can't even imagine Azumanga without the 3 quirky teachers.
Hm. I still like Yukari-sensei better.
Kudos for having a liking for an of-age character but must you use the word 'waifu'?
Oh snap thanks for the promote!

@VinceA: Sawako is my favorite character from the show I see no reason not to use the word.
reminds me to say the k-on!! ep 1 was less then k-on! ep 1
And a big internet high five to you, good sir
@Lifesong: Maybe it's just me but calling a 2D character your 'waifu' is a bit on the creepy side.
@VinceA: Its just you.
Nah, I get that too.
Sawako adds much, MUCH more to the show than Azusa.
I really liked Sawako-sensei when she first started appearing in the show, and then after a few episodes, I realized the little depth that she had as a character had been siphoned out to make her a child rapist and nothing else. I mourn for the loss of the sweet Sawako with her dark metal past and will have nothing to do with this impostor that only lives to put moe clothing on moe characters.
ALL HAIL SAWAKO

METAL UP YOUR ASS
I agree with this post, Sawako-sensei is AWESOME. Besides, there would never be those situations to exploit Mio's shyness if no one was harassing her to dress up.
I completely forgot this character existed even though she was the only reason I enjoyed finishing the K-on season 1 in the first place. She must not have been as awesome in the second season or someone would have commented on it by now.
She is still awesome and k-on is the best series of this season IMO. I am very serious about this statement. :P
