2009 Spring Anime Preview!

2009 Spring Anime Preview! photo

I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray. I know it is a little bit late, but I finally finished 2009 Spring Anime Preview! Everybody better be cheering right now, or else I’m coming to your house with a giant feather and a rope. Lots of great shows this season, and a lot of them coming out of the mecha-sized Sunrise Studio.

Looking forward to the next yaoi-bate Gundam anime? Tough luck, because this next one is all man! Not only that, but one of the finest manga in the history of manga-kind is finally being made into an anime, and I can’t wait to see it in motion. Let’s get started!

Title: Arc the Lad
Studio: Bee Train
Genre: Fantasy

Summary:

This anime is based off of the hit Playstaion game Arc the Lad I, II, and III. Basically an evil corporation makes evil monsters (what’s new?), and bad things happen to good people. The main character, Elk, gets caught up in this story when he rescues a hot beast tamer from this evil corporation. Yeah I know, it sounds like the worst story ever; but so does Lord of the Rings when you boil it down to a few sentences.

Notable:

  • First of all this anime is based off of a Playstation RPG game, which are always really good. Though I find it weird that they are making an anime off of a Playstaion game when they can base one off of a Playstation 2 or 3 game instead. Nevertheless, this anime is going to be the next Final Fantasy, mark my word.
  • The seiyuu who plays Elk, Daisuke Namikawa, also plays Rock from Black Lagoon.

Title: The Big O
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Mecha

Summary:

The basic story of this anime, if I’m getting this right, is that everyone in this city lost their memories. People hunt the world for memories, which make them stronger and have more powerful giant robots. The main character possesses a giant robot named “O” that hunts for memories and fights crimes. Seriously this sounds boring as hell. Nothing can beat Gurren Lagann, so why even try anymore?

Notables:

  • Crap artwork that looks like it was made 10 years ago by the people who made Batman: The Animated Series.
  • The robot has really, really big arms.

Title: Crest of the Stars
Studio: Sunrise
Genera: Space Opera

Summary:

All I can say is that this anime looks like its just going to be Legend of the Galactic Heroes, with elves. It is based off of a series of novels, like Haruhi; so you know its going to be good. From what I read, it seems like it's going to be a basic story we all know and love. Man meets girl, man flies spaceship, man is an elf, spaceships fly; simple.

Notables:

  • There are three books released so far, so I can either predict a sequel, or have it all jammed into one bad anime. Either way, elves.
  • This anime is created by Sunrise, so expect lots of Gundam and Code Geass references in it. Look for Lockon in the background everyone!

Title: Excel Saga
Studio: J.C. Staff
Genre: Comedy

Summary:

Do I really need to explain the story of a comedy show? Things happen and you laugh, period. Well if you insist, it’s about an evil warlord trying to take over a city. I’m not sure how that’s funny, but the Japanese find humor in the obscure; like torturing whales and bombing Perl Harbor.

Notables:

  • Anime is directed by Shinichi Watanabe. Who happens to be that Japanese guy with the Afro who dresses like Lupin and shows up at every con with a bottle of sake. You might have also noticed him in a recent episode of Hayate the Combat Butler.
  • Remember Jean from Claymore? Well her seiyuu, Kotono Mitsuishi, will be playing the lead role.

Title: Great Teacher Onizuka
Studio: Kodansha
Genre: Teacher tales

Summary:

This anime is going to rock. Seriously the manga is really freakin sweet, and we finally are able to see this babe on the anime screen. If you are like me and ever wondered what it would be like to have Kamina as a school teacher, then look no further than GTO. All I want to know is what took it so long to become an anime. Seriously its been like 10 years; unforgivable.

Notables:

  • Onizuka is Kamina.
  • The man arm wrestles Jason Voorhees. Plus the manga’s ending is great, I can’t wait to see this in the anime.

Title: Turn A Gundam
Studio: Sunrise
Genre: Mecha, Mustaches

Summary:

Wow, Gundam 00 just ended and now Sunrise is putting out another Gundam show; featuring the ugliest Gundam in the world. Seriously you can’t make a Gundam that is more handsome than the 00 Gundam, and Ribbons is simply beautiful. Nevertheless this one is about a giant white doll and people from the moon. It also looks like this Gundam series will take place in the early 1900’s; which makes no sense at all.

Notables:

  • Yoshiyuki Tomino returns to work! Expect everyone to die, or flying naked girls. Either way is win in my book.
  • This Gundam has a giant mustache.

Well, I hoped you enjoyed 1999’s Spring Anime Preview. Wait…

Damn it! I knew I shouldn’t have been listening to Prince while writing this!
