Final Impressions: Haganai NEXT

Apr 18 // Kristina Pino
Kodaka is kind of an interesting character in that he usually knows what's up, but acts like he's clueless, as Rika pointed out several times in the course of the second season. This is something that I found endearing during Haganai, but frustrating during NEXT. It's a huge problem that he would eventually have to face, and I'm happy that he had a shouting match with Rika during the finale to just air everything out once and for all.  As I mentioned during my recaps, I feel like NEXT is a huge step above the first season. It tackled a handful of social issues that were dealt with nicely, blanketed under the lesson that we should accept people for who they are, with all their shortcomings. The second important lesson imparted by Rika is that we shouldn't run away from our problems. As for my earlier note on all-accepting, I must emphasize that the key player here was Yukimura, whose goal in life (besides making friends and maintaining those friendships in her own way) is to become a true man, despite her gender. And she has no problem dealing with confrontation on the subject, as she demonstrated with Yusa. My only regret with that scene is that Kodaka didn't step in to the capacity of telling Yusa there was nothing weird about Yukimura, but instead sent her away.  Though I'd like to say I love the ending and, despite my cheering for plausible relationship between Kodaka and Sena, I did quite warm up to Rika enough to kind of root for her, too. I don't think that I would have been satisfied no matter what the ending because I feel like it could have gone so many ways. Sena's feelings for Kodaka intensified throughout the season, but the "problem" remains unresolved. And Yozora, who improved in her character so much by being confronted about her bullying, ran away and told everyone to leave her alone. This, I'm sure, will be tackled in what I assume is a lead-in for season three. I never viewed Yozora as a potential romantic partner for Kodaka, but I sense they're going to have their own little shouting match sometime soon, too. I look forward to the next season - seeing more of Yusa and the other student council members, the Neighbor's Club kiddos worrying about Yozora, and how Kodaka will handle the situation with Sena are definite highlights. Though everyone spent most of Haganai talking about how they want to make friends, it's clear by the end of NEXT that all of them are established as such, except in the case of Yozora who is probably wallowing in self-pity off in a cat cafe somewhere. Then again, no matter what, I will always fully appreciate shows like this that actually have substance but drop plenty of jokes and parody in to keep things visually interesting.
