OP Up! Cute Girls Edition

Feb 04 // Red Veron
[embed]33493:4433:0[/embed]Hana wa Odoreya Iroha ni Ho (Dancing in the Scent of Flowers)Anime: HaNaYaMaTaYear: 2014Hanayamata already differentiates itself from most of the other entries on here by having an overarching goal. The girls of Hanayamata are trying to form club and join a competition about Yosakoi, a modern rendition of a traditional dance for summer festivals in Japan. The journey of the girls in Hanayamata is still very much true to the Cute Girls genre with the many events leading up to the end and the beautiful animated choreography in the opening captures it perfectly. Along with the flowing fabric of the kimono with the cute sailor uniforms shown off in the opening just readies you for the beautiful animation in the show. If you want a more structured story for your cute girls anime, Hanayamata is for you.[embed]33493:4438:0[/embed]Otao Ga Yoroshikkute... Yo! (Thanks For Your Appreciation!)Anime: JoshirakuYear: 2012Just as fun as it is stressful to watch, Joshiraku is perfect for those wanting something a bit deeper with their Cute Girl anime. Joshiraku features girls who are professional Rakugo comediennes of the traditional Japanese art of Rakugo, which is sort of a one-person comedic storytelling stage performance.Focusing primarily on the girls on their time off the stage with a lot of hilarious antics along with some Japanese political and social commentary on the side, which may be lost on non-Japanese viewers. While it has some of that commentary, don't be discouraged from checking this one out since it features a lot more comedy on the lighter side.[embed]33493:4436:0[/embed]The Great YuriYurarararaYuruYuri IncidentAnime: Yuru YuriYear: 2011Now I know it says "Yuri" on the title but don't let that turn you away. Yuru Yuri is still a great comedy that everyone who likes comedy needs to see (which is probably everyone). The Yuri part still comes in but only as somewhat a parody of the genre, with the characters and setting being the typical Yuri elements is a delivery for the hilarious and wacky antics. My friend who loves the Yuri genre recommended this to me, despite me not liking or knowing anything about the genre. Yuru Yuri is the funniest show in this selection and I encourage anyone who likes comedy that likes to go into the wacky and even absurd side.[embed]33493:4439:0[/embed]Morning ArchAnime: A-ChannelYear: 2011This is one of those shows that got greenlight as an anime in the wake of the insane success of K-On! and was dismissed as an attempt cash grab imitation. When I first tried watching it years later after it aired, I was surprised of the enjoyable opening with its creative design and catchy music. I found that the A-Channel was as fun and quickly became one of my favorites.Definitely a solid show that didn't get much attention, I highly recommend A-Channel if you like any of these shows on here and in the genre in general.[embed]33493:4440:0[/embed]Utauuo!! MiracleAnime: K-On!Year: 2007K-On! The juggernaut that very much launched the Cute Girls genre into the spotlight in the past decade, offers a lot and deserves all the recognition it received. What more can I say? It's great if you like the light and happy slice-of-life stuff with great music and fuwa fuwa time.BONUS[embed]33493:4437:0[/embed]Jumping!!Anime: Kiniro MosaicYear: 2013I couldn't find the anime opening video for Kiniro Mosaic, probably because the strict crackdown of the production companies involved are heavily promoting the voice actresses (who voice the characters in the show) into a girl group. Though I think this live action video is much more fun than the opening with the cute voice actresses dressed up like the characters they voice.A fun time, except for the horrible engrish that I just simply cannot stand. However, I stuck with Kiniro Mosaic and am now excited with the upcoming second season. Karen is probably the smartest character in the show. What's your favorite anime opening with cute girls? I know I missed a few greats but only because I couldn't find any videos because of the overprotective production companies.

Top 5 Best Eyepatch Gals

Mar 01 // Marlin Clock
Honorary Mention: Mirai (Senran Kagura)  Yes, I did say I would name five, but this girl has been recently brought to my attention, and I simply could not ignore her vim! While my introduction to this gothic loli has been brief, it has been quite an eye-opening experience. Not only does she have impeccable fashion sense, but an arsenal of adorable and hilarious implements under what can only be considered a hyperskirt. She can summon tiny F-16s that fly her away at a moment's notice. I'd like to see you even try and say that's not awesome. It's just not possible.  5. Minene Uryu (Mirai Nikki)  The story of her eyepatch is about as brutal as it can get.  In a fight to become the next Supreme Being in the universe, she sacrificed her eye in order to save her life as it was cruelly pierced by an artfully thrown dart. She would later on to become one of the most noble of the anti-heroes that inhabited her macabre tale, ultimately being the most important character in the entire story.  4. Asuka Langley Shikinami (Rebuild of Evangelion)  She's a troubled redhead who's also a pirate. What more do you need to know? Alright I'll give some more. Jeez you people are so picky.  You see, in another life this girl went about her days the way most children in this world do. She would destroy God's messengers, relive childhood trauma, get throttled violently by a wimpy teenager, all without knowing the sweet feeling of black velvet upon one's eyelashes. Thankfully, through the power of exploiting media franchises, we got to see this young lass born anew! Clad in the most traditional of eyewear, she now fights for the glory of all her kin. Now Marlin, you may be saying, have you even watched the new Rebuild? No. No I haven't, but that doesn't mean I can tell an awesome eyepatch when I see it.  3. Rikka Takanashi (Chuunibyo demo Koi ga Shitai!)  Showing us that eyepatches do not need to be the exclusive territory of badasses, Rikka brings a soft touch to our list. She is also unique as the only member to retain her eye despite it. In a tale of coping, her eyepatch was perhaps the most meaningful, representative of the trouble she has in letting her father go. While it is a pity that the removal of her eyepatch is what activates her most powerful delusions, the fact that she still uses it keeps her among the greatest to ever wear the article.   2. Mei Misaki (Another) Mei was really the standout performance of Another. While the show was clearly in the point of view of Kouichi, the main focus of every new revelation always came back to Mei. She was as mysterious as she was likeable. While much of the characters tried to get Kouichi, and subsequently us, to shy away from her, it only made us want to know more. She even became quite adorable after getting to know her and seeing her interact with him as a normal person. Plus, she definitely has the most plot relevant eyepatch, concealing Another's own version of Death Perception.  1. Nice Holystone (Baccano!) Any who don't know the story of this blonde bombshell should hold their manhoods cheap! This is a fair soul so dedicated in her passion that at the ripe age of 14 she blew herself to high heavens, and, despite losing her eye and retaining scars, held the fortitude to go back and continue to practice her precious art. She is no mere ordinary eyepatch wielder; she understands its tactical importance! Many will not take advantage of the space created when their sundered eye is relieved. Not Nice Holystone. Ever aware of the necessity of backup plans, she even keeps a bomb hidden beneath the patch, hidden cleverly in that empty socket!   Despite her fiery soul, she has the tenderest of hearts.  She is always looking out in the best interest of her love, the equally ridiculously named Jacuzzi Splot, and quick to protect the innocent with him when they come into danger. When the Flying Pussyfoot found itself becoming a shootout, she and Jacuzzi quickly made a plan that saved many lives. Truly her fire and heroics show that she is the most deserving of this number one spot.

Best Valentines Day news? Miya OVA, confirmed!

First Impressions: Amagami SS+

Jan 10 // Chris Walden
Junichi is stood up by a girl he was meant to be having a date with one Christmas Eve, and since then, he's been avoiding relationships with girls, apparently getting all of his required female dose from his awesome sister Miya (by this I mean she's a bit mad, rather than there being any shady, law infringing shenanigans). He is often holed up in the closet in his room, which he has converted into an awesome planetarium of sorts. It's from this point that the story splits (at least) seven ways, with seven very different ladies being the focus of each split. In the original series, this translated into six four-episode arcs focusing on one of the main girls, and a bonus single episode of an entirely new girl.  The stories were very sweet indeed, and while it may seem that it's just another one of those shows with one guy and all the ladies, it never really seems that way. It's a proper romance anime through and through, which even wrapped up the arcs nicely by showing Junichi and his lady of choice in the not-so-distant future together. So, does ramming in extra episodes ruin the experience? If these were in the main series I may have agreed, as they are essentially filler episodes, but they are also darn interesting. As for their content, there are no complaints from me!  The new series begins with Tsukasa Ayatsuji, the class representative who likes to hide the fact that she is incredibly tsundere and cynical. She still seems as sweet as ever, but even Junichi seems to still be wary of her darker side! Opening fanservice aside, this episode was surprisingly dramatic and gripping. For what I imagined to be glorified bath house/beach/swimming pool episodes, Amagami throws a curveball and shows that it most certainly is serious about this.  Ayatsuji is running for the student council, picking Junichi as her vice-president and failing to tell him about any of it. She is competing against three other people, including the super-quiet yet undeniably adorable romance rival, Sae Nakata. The other two consist of some random guy who seems to be in love with himself, and a new girl known as Noriko Kurosawa (pictured above). The drama starts when it is revealed that Junichi is listed as the vice-president for Kurosawa's campaign, which she had done deliberately to try and make Ayatsuji mess up her game. However, Ayatsuji catches on to this fairly sharpish, and when Kurosawa realises that this hasn't done the trick, she uses her fathers political power (no, really) to rig the student election preliminary votes. Some mass campaigning and poster-creating occurs, and Ayatsuji is back on level terms, so Kurosawa promptly kisses Junichi in front of her. Man, Japanese student council elections are serious business.  The opening is nothing special, but it's certainly not a terrible choice. Not quite as funky as the previous opening, but this show has Miya and is therefore forgiven. For an unbiased verdict, this show isn't worth watching unless you've seen the main series, and you'll probably only like that if you fancy a serious romance with a small splash of comedy. It's a 'feel good' show that won't fail at cheering you up (unless, of course, you are watching the Rihoko Sakurai arc). Miya, sing us out! [You can watch Amagami SS Plus on The Anime Network!]

Wait, hold on a second. Amagami SS already ended, didn't it? Well apparently they aren't done just yet, gifting us with a further twelve episodes about Junichi and his alternate universe relationships. Dear god, can we stumbl...
