Elfen Lied, Fushigi Yugi, more get DVD/BD release dates photo
Elfen Lied, Fushigi Yugi, more get DVD/BD release dates
by Kristina Pino

ANN wrote a few blurbs regarding the street dates for several releases coming up in the way of old-ass anime getting the DVD and BD treatment. On the list are Fushigi Yugi (OVA), Elfen Lied, Gao-Gai-Gar (November 27 release), and more (see the first link in post).

Fushigi Yugi (OVA DVD collection) is already for sale at Right Stuf and the release date is set to February 26. The MSRP is US$34.99 though at the time of writing, there's a pretty sweet discount to be had. Man, I used to be obsessed with this show back in the day. I don't know if I'd enjoy it if I were to re-watch it now, though. Still, it's always good to see stuff re-released for older fans. This also served to remind me that Chichiri is one of my favorite anime characters ever.

Elfen Lied (2004) is being upgraded to glorious Blu-ray, so you can catch all the blood and guts in full resolution and everything else that comes with that format. Animate reports that it'll be released on December 19th and will include all of the TV episodes, a bonus episode and an exclusive, bonus manga by the original creator. All of this for... ¥16,800 (roughly US$216 going by today's exchange rate)!

Media Blasters will not rerelease Record of Lodoss War

Back in 2010, there was much rejoicing when Media Blasters announced that they had acquired the license for a rerelease of Record of Lodoss War. And then, there was a whole lot of nothing. It's been two years and the rereleas...

Uh-oh: Media Blasters cuts 60% of its staff photo
Uh-oh: Media Blasters cuts 60% of its staff
by Josh Tolentino

Eeek! Just as Bandai (and Europe's Beez) bowed out of the physical distribution scene, it seems like even more companies are tightening their belts. Media Blasters, fourteen-year veteran of the industry and publisher of such iconic titles as Berserk, Rurouni Kenshin, and soon Kite and Squid Girl, has tightened its belt by approximately ten people, effectively 60% percent of its full-time staff.

Ouch. That said, they're not all "fired" per se. CEO John Sirabella stated that the company will be asking the folks laid off to continue working on a freelance basis. Said Sirabella:

"All of the small publishers are going through this sort of thing right now. Not just anime. Everyone's transitioning from full-time staff to freelancers."

So yes, they won't all be gone, but obviously, not everyone's going to go for that option, which means that some folks will be departing "for realz".That said, Media Blasters was adamant that its release lineup will not change. It will continue putting out all of its scheduled titles as planned.

While it's good to see that Media Blasters itself isn't "dead" and will be continuing at the same pace, it's never cool to see layoffs in an already contracting industry.

Rejoice! Kite film remake is "groundbreaking" & "not 3D"
