NYAF 09: Yui Makino interview
by Brad Rice, 10/12/2009
NYAF 09: Yui Makino interview photo

That's right, we still have stuff to talk about when it comes to the New York Anime Fest! I got a chance to sit down with Yui Makino after Jeff covered her panels. Ms. Makino is a prodigy-of-all-trades, working in classical music, seiyuu, as well as having her own singing career.

With so many angles, and such a short time limit, I was at a bit of a loss as to what to interview her about. So many things to talk about, and so many questions I could see people asking. So, in keeping with Japanator tradition, we don't like to ask normal questions.

So, read on to see how an up-and-coming star in Japan enjoyed New York, plans to save the world, and where she ate her first New York hotdog.

Yui Makino, the acting-prodigy-turned-voice-acting-musician graced us at NYAF this past Saturday with a little concert. Japanator got intimate with her performance front and center.

Read on for hi-touch stories, the set list, and all that stuff which makes you wish you were there to see Tsubasa Chronicle's Sakura and Welcome to the NHK's Misaki do her song and dance.

NYAF 09: Our final round of cosplay lets the purge begin

NYAF 09: Our final round of cosplay lets the purge begin photo

It's no secret: I like the phrase, "Let the purge begin!" So I'll be using it quite frequently as I find myself posting about Gundam and watching it.

Naturally, with this being the 30th anniversary of Mobile Suit Gundam and Tomino as the guest of honor, Gundam was the obvious choice of cosplay for many. I'd even go so far as to say it was the biggest set of cosplay here at the con that I noticed.

So, let's take a look at the last remnants of New York Anime Fest's cosplay for this year. Be sure to notice the Guilty Gear gang and the K-ON! cosplayers. I need to see more of them -- especially Ritsu! Thanks again to Matt Cashman for the photography help!

NYAF 09: Our second round of cosplay will possess your controller

NYAF 09: Our second round of cosplay will possess your controller photo

Now that we've gotten all the announcements out of the way from New York Anime Fest, it's time to check out what you really care about: the cosplay.

Simple and straightforward, down below are some of the pictures that you've been craving. The highlight here was the man going around as Bumblebee in a suit that dwarfed the rest of the crowd. The cool bit that made it all the more awesome? He had a microphone rigged up to talk out of the speakers. That took some work.

Now, go and check out the photos. While cosplay was few and far between at this con, there was also very little half-assed cosplaying of people wearing Urahara hats and pajamas to make his outfit, or very many L cosplayers -- although I did catch a weak Heero Yuuy cosplayer.

Thanks to Matt Cashman for handling our photography at the event!

NYAF 09: FUNimation licenses X, Initial D
by Brad Rice, 09/28/2009
NYAF 09: FUNimation licenses X, Initial D photo

As the title implies, FUNimation has picked up the rights to some older series that had been licensed here in the US previously: Clamp's X and the multi-track drifting Intial D. According to the PR, X will see its first DVD release in 2010, and from what I can tell, it will keep all the original stuff from when it was released by ADV.

Meanwhile, Initial D -- the entirety of the series -- will see a new dub cast take a shot at its dialogue, while the show itself will remain unedited with all of the original music intact. Now isn't that wonderful? I guess it'll be high time to finally watch the series that's so well parodied and referenced in anime and manga.

NYAF 09: Viz to simulcast InuYasha starting October 3rd
by Brad Rice, 09/28/2009
NYAF 09: Viz to simulcast InuYasha starting October 3rd photo

I missed out on the Viz panel, so I'm just going to rely on ANN, AnimeVice and PR from Viz to help me get through this post.

Viz's headlining piece of news is that they're going to be simulcasting the release of the new season of InuYasha starting on October 3rd over at ShonenSunday.com. Seeing as it's been a relatively big success with FUNimation streaming One Piece and Fullmetal Alchemist, so they could attract a big audience with InuYasha.

As for their new licenses:

-Gente by Natsume Ono
-Toshokan Sensou (Library Wars) by Kiiro Yumi
-Bob and His Funky Crew by Puncho Kondoh
-What's the Answer by Tondabayashi
-Nice to Meet You, Kamisama by Julietta Suzuki
-Grand Guignol Orchestra by Kaori Yuki

They've also licensed Slum Online by Hiroshi Sakarazuka and The Next Continent by Issui Ogawa for their Haikasoru line of books. I'm glad to see Issui Ogawa getting licensed again, especially after reading The Lord of the Sands of Time.

I'm especially looking forward to reading Toshokan Sensou, and hope that this means the anime will follow shortly. I've been waiting to watch that for a while now.

NYAF 09: Celebrating Del Rey's 5th anniversary with a katana and cake
by Brad Rice, 09/28/2009

As part of the pre-party event for New York Anime Fest, Del Rey Manga celebrated its 5th anniversary. Normally, cutting the cake is a simple affair that calls for a simple knife. But when you've got a cake that's the size of five gigantic volumes of manga? Well, there's only one thing you can use: a katana.

Talking with Ali Kokmen at NYAF, he was rather happy about the cake cutting, although he's sure some sword makers over in Japan are crying at how they used the katana. But hey, it was all in the name of delicious cake.

Now we here at Japanator need to come up with something even more epic for our fifth anniversary. Any suggestions? Also, congratulations to Del Rey for making it this far in the manga world. You guys have done an awesome job, and keep up the great work.

NYAF 09: Vertical licenses Chii's Sweet Home

NYAF 09: Vertical licenses Chii's Sweet Home photo

Now that I'm back with a steady Internet connection, it's time to play catch-up with all of our news from the New York Anime Fest. First up is our lovely group of friends at Vertical!

As you know, we told you about their license for Peepo Choo, and the morning of their panel, Ed stopped me to say they had gotten several more licenses. Of course, I was without Internet and couldn't add that to my post. So, I bring the news to you now! The whole batch of their new titles:

-Chii's Sweet Home
-Needle
-Twin Spica
-Peepo Choo

So yes, every get excited because this finally means that the cute Japanese cat will be making its way to the US, come June 1st! The manga will be flipped so it reads left-to-right, and will be printed in full color. Vertical is also looking into getting merchandise, photobooks, and various other Chii's Sweet Home goods out into the market. So, it's Colette's wet dream.

Ed highlighted a bunch of their other titles from their upcoming line, and one that caught my attention was Flowers of Edo by Michael Kennedy -- their first OEL fiction work. It falls under the category of historical fiction, about the U.S. preparing to launch an invasion of the Japanese islands during WWII, with what seems to be the help of a Japanese soldier. It's got my alternate history senses tingling.

NYAF 09: Bandai Entertainment industry panel
by Brad Rice, 09/26/2009
NYAF 09: Bandai Entertainment industry panel photo

Anime. Let's go! Rob Napton and team was on hand to present to us their latest and greatest products. "Due to the recession, we don't have any new titles to announce. Contracts negotiations are taking longer. In 2010, we're moving more into Blu-ray releases." That's the big quote of the show. Other than that? Not much going on in the panel.

They're working on a new OVA and moving to three pricing models: 6 volumes, 3 volumes or 2 volumes. Oh, so they do have an announcement. The Eureka Seven film, Good Night, Sleep Tight, Young Lovers is set to be released on 1/26/10, with Blu-ray discs going for $39.98 and DVD priced at $29.98.

Other than that, we've been sitting through the panel while suffering through an overly-enthusiastic fan commenting on everything. It's all good, though. They showed the trailer for Gurren Lagann, which honestly never gets old.

Well, I'll just leave you be with this information, and get back to taking cosplay photos. We'll see if we can squeeze any more words out of Bandai Entertainment later on.

NYAF 09: Del Rey's industry panel
by Brad Rice, 09/26/2009
NYAF 09: Del Rey's industry panel photo

Del Rey got us up early in the morning to give us some licensing announcements. I mean, that's all you're probably reading this post for, am I right?

-Here I am by Ema Toyama
-Yokai Navi Runa by Miyoko Ikeda
-Rave Master by Hiro Mashima
-Arisa by Natsumi Ando

But hey, that's not all that they had to announce. Sure, that's it for new titles, but they did have some news besides patting themselves on the back for their manga doing really well on various national book charts. First up, their book, Clamp in America, has doubled in size. Clamp sent them way too much artwork, and so they decided to double the size, but keep the price the same. So, if you're a Clamp fan, buy this book. Simple as that.

Also, they'll be publishing Jason Thompson's book King of RPGs. Jason's an awesome guy, and so if you've got an interest in tabletop games or pen and paper RPGs, this comic will be your jam.

And just in case you were wondering, when fighting Viz in a cage match, Del Rey said they would field Dallas Middaugh and David Yu. We're just going to have to see who Viz would field in its fight to the death. My guess is Evelyn Dubocq.
