Okay so this isn't exactly a full length animated film, but it's the next best thing. Saiyuki Gaiden, the previously manga-only prequel to the Kazuya Minekura classic, Saiyuki, is apparently getting it's own OVA. No doubt the OVA will cover the missing chapters that weren't adapted into the original series that aired back in 2000.
For those of you who don't know, the series was based on the classic Chinese novel Journey to the West, which has been adapted numerous times, much like Romance of the Three Kingdoms. While this adapatation is tad loose, I found it more enjoyable than the original story. The characters aren't exactly the heroes that the original novel makes them out to be, adding a bit of attitude to the mix and ultimately creating a far more entertaining dynamic.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure what's going on with the license here in the states as it previously belonged to ADV. Despite the problems with ADV, the series has continued to do pretty well in Japan. I'll definitely keep everyone posted if I hear anything else.
