A fine moment in Japanese robotics

11:00 PM on 03.30.2011

You'd think with all of their abilities in robotics that perhaps some creations out of Japan would be a little more...cool? I guess this robot is really good at what it does, but puts all of it's amazing abilities to lame use. This particular robot is really great with handling semi-liquids like ketchup or mayo. You know how you drop some on a plate and you try to scrape it up but some always stays? Not this robot. This guy's a pro.

This robotic arm was original used in a bakery production line, and let me tell you, the fine motor skills required to handle semi-liquids and gels without smearing them or altering their shape whatsoever is pretty impressive. Now my question is this: why aren't these amazing motor skills being put to use for something more significant like enabling people to walk again, or giving them amazing prosthetic limbs??

Hit the jump to see this robotic arm in action and marvel at the awesome skills ...put to really mundane use.

Haha how does this work??
And a single drop of oil fell from the robots joint that day...
That's actually really kinda cool...yet completely pointless. I mean what would you actually use this for in day to day life? Even if you have something like a bakery I couldn't see much use out of it.
Love the header image.
"Now my question is this: why aren't these amazing motor skills being put to use for something more significant like enabling people to walk again, or giving them amazing prosthetic limbs??"

You sentiments while admirable, are misplaced.

That's like asking why car manufacturers don't make wheelchairs that go from 0-60 km/h in 4 seconds with fine traction control and automated gear shifts.

The question to ask is, as Riku3008 stated, how does it work?
Think of a robot handling glue or paint in a factory. This could save a lot of wasted product that can't be picked up or be used to finely remove excess.
As someone who works with viscous liquid suspensions on a regular basis in lab, I can see this kind of technology being extremely useful for a number of research purposes.
Yeah, this tech could be really useful for cleanup work not just specifically related to bakeries. If it worked with any dangerous chemicals, it could help a lot in cleanup duties. It could effectively speed up the cleanup work of the teams.
Let's rejoice. All vacuum cleaners will soon be replaced by awesome robotic arms that can pick up even the smallest dust in any corner of the house.

And you should not worry that much about this kind of "mundane" use of robotic skills. They are also put to good use : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_8VhW9JIwUk&feature=player_embedded
