Jason Thompson is a manga master, a self-proclaimed manga-kage of our hidden ninja village. The Comics Journal has an interview up with this man who is the author of the forthcoming book, Manga: The Complete Guide. This is a lengthy interview which goes over his history, manga’s history in America, and how he wrote Manga: The Complete Guide.
The amazing part of this interview is when he stated that he actually read over 1,000 different manga series and cataloged each one in his book. Another great aspect of this interview is when he talks about the future of manga in America.
As I told the people at Morning Magazine when they asked me for my opinion on the manga market in America, titles that are published as seinen and josei manga in Japan are kind of like the material produced as prime-time TV in America. In most cases, that has yet to catch on in America. Manga, which in the '90s may have been stereotyped as tentacle porn, is now stereotyped as stuff for 13- and 14-year-olds, because that's what's making money. The question remains whether Americans have room for more than one stereotype about comics in their minds at one time.
You can buy Manga: The Complete Guide October 9th. Well, I must part for now and start reading more manga so that I may become the next manga-kage. Believe it!
