Angel Beats makes mad ratings, we deign to pick it up photo

I initially dismissed Angel Beats! on the appearance of its protagonist, and I'm reasonably sure that I wasn't alone at the time. Now, new ratings reports from broadcaster MBS have inspired me to give the show a chance.

It seems that Angel Beats! episode six garnered almost 7% of viewership that week, the highest record for any late-night anime in several years, and handily beating the concurrently airing K-ON!! by several points, though the girls of HTT maintained their top standing on other stations.

If something's that popular, it's surely worth a look, which is why we'll be adding Angel Beats! to our anime coverage moving forward. Expect to see recaps of the show starting with next week's edition of Annotated Anime!

In case you're in the same position as me and want to catch up on the program, you may want to look at Jon Snyder's first impressions piece.

wow. JAPANATOR overlooks one of JAPAN's hit anime. and i thought 2012 was a hoax..
ROCKET CHAIRS cannot be beaten.
About damn time.
It took some statistics to get Japanator to watch the show :P.
I have to admit I was surprised the show was already being followed.

I haven't seen any of it(just read the impressions on ANN) and the premise was incredibly interesting to me and being that Key was involved made me even more interested. Add onto that that everyone at ANN seemed to rate it at above average and good and I was interested in seeing the show get licensed(don't like fansubs and won't watch it that way unless it remains unlicensed for quite awhile.)
Yeah this show is pretty good. It doesn't excel in any category or break to much new ground, but the sum of its parts makes an entertaining show.
I'm in love with this show.

TK, Tenshi, Yui, what more could you want?
YES. I approve of this. Any chance of getting short opinions for the previous episodes?
"and I'm reasonably sure that i wasn't alone"
I think you were...
About time. Who doesn't love haruhi...um i mean yuri :D
I liked this weeks ep. There's been some interesting charactor development at times, but it's a bit sporadic. The show has a dark side and that's when it's the most interesting to watch.
Finally, you guys decide to pick it up. It's getting really good!
it's actually a record for the channel. just the channel. show is all about Yui-nyan tho
That is why you guys shouldn't judge anime based on appearance! :D
About time you became interested. Angel Beats! will probably be the best series of this season. (Durarara! doesn't count, as it was released last season!)
Also its a good show I highly recommend for those who have not picked it
So, we're going to see this in annotated from now on, correct?

Glad we're all on understanding terms here. :D
About god damn time people! Come on!
If it's REALLY getting that good, I should pick it back up. So far, it seems kinda mediocre after 3 episodes, but if there's this kind of response...
Then again... Lots of people like K-On too...
I've been following it. It's a dumb show, where dumb things happen to dumb characters.

Yet I'm still watching it.

How it is.
If it's really as great as these people claim, I guess I should consider continuing where I left off...at episode 1. Yeah, I was honestly not that impressed. Maybe it's one of those slow starter shows that really pick up after a while though.

Also, Angel Beats cannot be best anime of the season, simply because Durarara, Arakawa Under the Bridge, and Big Windup exist.
"Japanator Eats its Words and Becomes a Hypocrite" is an appropriate title for this post as well...
YEAH!~~~ finally you guys see the light~~~
Also, T.K? Greatest character ever.
CRAZY BABY
I love this show to death.

T.K. for President

JUST DANCE!
Angel Beats is successful? THIS is the downfall of anime, not K-ON.
@ Dliessmgg: It's a really good anime because it has plot and character development, it's not just a blob of moe. Depth makes a good anime!
@Dliessmgg: Did you post this in a sarcastic manner or do you seriously believe that?

Last I checked, K-On is just a show where things happen and those things happen around 'cute' girls. At least Angel Beats! has something going on... Plot for instance... And mystery.
K-On is just mediocre stuff. Angel Beats is one of the most stupid things I've seen, and it's not stupid in a so bad it's good way.
I see Angel Beats is splitting opinion. I have to admit there are logic holes aplenty, but I have this feeling this is going somewhere with the plot and characters, and that's why I'm keeping up with it. I may end up with a major facepalm when they reveal everyone is just just needs to cheer up or something, but I'm hoping for something unexpected and kickass in the end.
@kindaaloser:

There's nothing hypocritical about it... they're just admiring they might have been wrong.
When Jun Maeda makes something I don't enjoy then I will be surprised. Angel Beats! does have some moments where only the barest minimum explanation is given in order to keep the plot intact which is standard fare from key its part of how Key works its magic things feel just a little bit more rushed then usual.. but considering this is only a 13 episode series they are doing wonderfully. Glad to see Japanator giving Angels Beats! the attention it deserves.
@BGFUSAB
Which is glorious.
Good, I'm loving Angel Beats
haters gonna hate
Just dance!
@ Dliessmgg: Your opinion =/= fact, hate to burst the little bubble you live in.
Meh, dropped it already. The good stuff gets buried under the mediocre.
They actually ruined a lot of things with this latest episode.. :\
And this is where I say "I told ya so" to all of you "it's just a haruhi clone show" people.

Seriously, Angel Beats, definitely at least one of the top 3 shows this season.
After rewatching episode 3 and venturing into episode 4 (which was HILARIOUS might I add); I'm back aboard this gravy train.

Thanks Japanator and nameless statistics, for making me see the error of my ways!
Well this show is one of the few things I am watching at the moment. I was mostly done with anime until I began watching this show.
@Metaknight84: I know that opinions are not facts. It still baffles me that Angel Beats is successful.
@Dliessmgg: I don't like bananas. Therefore I am baffled as to how people make money off of them. Wait what? There are other people in the world besides me? My consumption doesn't decide what's popular? Oh shit! That explains a lot.
@Dliessmgg: Because the creators of the show not only have a fanbase (Myself part of it) that is willing to watch pretty much anything they produce AND also has an audience built of viewers who just genuinely like the mystery/drama genre?

The main focus is that it's got appeal to a group of people. You really shouldn't keep posting in a manner that makes you look as arrogant as it does, throwing around words like 'stupid' and 'downfall of anime'.

There really isn't a show that can be blamed for any drop in quality... It's just a matter of more shows coming out appealing to specific audiences.
