I say to you today, my friends, that even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in Japanese robot shows of old. I have a dream that one day Japan will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all giant robots are created equal, and equally blow shit up.” I have a dream that Gundams and Gunmen will one day be real, so I can own one and shout: “Who the hell do you think I am!?” as I stomp all over your business.

According to Gunota Headlines, there is a slight chance that my dream might come true. November 7-8 the 2007 Research Paper Reading Meeting ~Defense Technology Symposium 2007 will be held at the Hotel Grad Hill Ichigaya. That’s cool and all, but that is not the cool part -- over at the Ministry Of Defense's Technical Research & Development Institute’s website they have the program for this top secret meeting available.

Here is where it gets interesting: on the second page of this program there lists a topic called "Towards The Realization Of A Gundam (Advanced Personal Equipment System)." This means they will be thinking about how a Gundam (or giant robot) may be useful in modern day defense technology. That’s nice and all, but hopefully they can brain storm a few designs out then and there so that I may have one by Christmas next year. Make it clap people!

If they are or do make one, I think I will want one.
If not I'll make one. Maybe a EVA, or BIG O! What about a Transformer (but I couldn't drive it then but still cool), I think I'll have a Gundam.

The one goal of all mankind...should be to produce Gundam. And get slapped by our commanding officers, so we can say "Not even my own father hit me..." unless he did, in case you're pretty fucked. But that just opens the doors for the rest of us.

This is cool! Although I'm sorta upset that they'll probably end up beating me to it at this rate (I've honestly been planning on building a full-scale functional gundam for over 10 years now- it's part of the reason I went and got a mechanical engineering degree), but hey, so long as SOMEONE builds it I won't complain...

I just can't believe they're honestly having a meeting to discuss the practically of a modern day mobile suit type system......dammit, yet another reason I wished I was in Japan.

Heero Yuy, It is good they havening a meeting because in my mind, the one problem we would have building one is the movement we could really get out of one. If you use the tactics we use now the most we could get out of one is a Mecwarrior style kind. (I'm also going for engineering degree)

Well, the biped design is ineffective because it's very difficult to keep reliable balance at the same time as speed. However, they could make robotic tanks pretty effective, and experiment with multi-legged and tracked vehicles. I'm sure the sensors and interface would work, as well as having arms with hands that could switch ordinance quickly as opposed to having to retrofit the unit every time you want to change payloads.

So in other words-- yes. But it won't end up looking much like a Gundam. And then there are the impossible logistics-- go watch Evangelion and ponder that. Ammo belts the size of skyscrapers are expensive and dangerous. . .

a 'gundam' would be a delicious target for rpgs, tanks, and missile fire from (choose either one!) a gunship,a battle cruiser, or even a fighter. assuming that it doesnt have plot armor like what we see on tv shows, its not even worth piloting coz lauching from the ground and then flying pulls a lot Gs on the pilots, maximizing risks passing out before even before taking flight.

how much would a huge gundam-like robot cost? think 1 gundam = 1 carrier battle fleet.

so if i were you, id rather wait for one humongous ship to crash-land on us. that way we can pave the to developing transforming biped-fighters.
