First we got theGurren Lagann dub trailer (sort of) and now we finally get to hear what our favorite miniature otaku sound like in the Luck Star dub; what a week! Now before I say anything about this I just would like to point out that Konata sounds like someone trying to do an impression of Bart Simpson. Not that it is a bad thing or anything, but I just want to throw it out there.
Like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Tsukasa is not cute enough, while Kagami is not tsundere enough; however, Miyuki is just right. Konata on the other hand is cute as a button, but that’s just maybe me because I am a hardcore konata fan (4 life!) Now if you think this is fake, think again. You can view this trailer on Bandai Entertainment’s website, however it appears randomly as a featured trailer in the upper-right corner. Now Japanator, what do you think?

Arg..., on one hand it's not THAT bad but I finished rewatching the series yesterday so the Japanese voices are really fresh in my mind. Also, I agree with you on the Bart Simpson thing, Kagami sound a bit boyish too. What I hate about english dubs is that most of the time the voices sound generic and no matter what anime you watch it's always the same type of voices, but this is not the case with that. Not that I really mind because I'll just watch with subs. I hope the DVDs will come with as much stuff as the Haruhi DVDs. And why is a grown man like me having so much fun watching the girls do nothing much. Like if I have a bad day I just need to watch some Lucky Star. They need to release the manga over here.
I was gonna say burn in a fire, dubs suckle, paaaaawwwnnnch, and Lucky Shit but the voices sound actually serviceable except for the fact that Kagami sounds way too much like a boy. I like the general snarkiness of Konota's dub, Tsukasa could be cuter, and Miyuki... I don't give a shit about Miyuki.
They do need to post this disclaimer before the first episode:
"WARNING! FIRST EPISODE SUCKS. STICK WITH IT, TRUST ME, IT'S WORTH IT."
Okay, I like that they're going for relatively real-girl voices...but Konata's not excited enough, Miyuki's TOO cute, Kagami should be a little bitchier...Tsukasa's about right, I think.
Except for the part where, once again, they all sound like grown-ups doing impressions of a teenage voice, rather than like teenagers...
...But hey, everyone knows I tend not to like dubs, so take that as you will ;)
Very, very...'meh.' I was expecting far worse, but its not bad, I guess. I'll probably stick to the subs, but I'll watch the dubs at least once to see how good / hilariously bad they end up.
I always watch everything in both Dubs and Subs.
I appreciate the effort made by American VAs to portray characters from a culture different from ours.
The voices can't be identical. If there's one thing I learned from working with Japanese people is that Japanese people's voices are dramatically different from American voices, and as such you can't expect an American dub to sound even remotely similar to the original Japanese.
That said, Konata does sound like she lacks a bit of "punch"... But then again, this trailer doesn't show any of her funnier scenes in which she shows more charisma. I think it's too early to judge, but so far I'm neither impressed nor disappointed, and that's good.
The voices are alright. It may not be what we're used to after watching it in its original language but the voices seem to work and like serial, I also appreciate the effort put into dubs by VAs.
Also, here's to hoping for a bunch of awesome extra stuff that I may have a hard time explaining(like the Haruhi pillowcase, hairband, and armband >_>) in the L*S DVD!
yep, I like the voices actually Wendee Lee s as good as I had hoped for Konata, as mentioned she lacks some punch but in most japanese scenes Konatas lazy and lying around expecialy in the begining. I think we'll see the flare as well as the fun trade off.
This is a prime example of a show that SHOULD NOT be dubbed. What's the point? This is a japanese slice of life schooldays show, aimed at geeks. Why waste the money on dubs. The only reason they dub is to make the show more accessible. Lucky Star is in no way accessible like other shows like Bleach or Naruto.
Does anyone know if they're going to Americanize the jokes in Lucky Star? Like instead of Monster Hunter references you'll be seeing World of Warcraft references? If they do this I would just give up on American anime distrubtion all together. Seriously who the hell is going to get the jokes aside anime geeks/japanophiles.
Huh...I dunno, Hirano Aya just had this...feel to her voice, the squeeky, constant loop into strange, almost hypnotic sounds just sets the standard. It's not bad, but I wouldn't have sex with their voices.
I expected something horrible, but as far as dubs go, this one is pretty mediocre to two percent above average. I could get use to Kagamin's voice over time, but everyone else is pretty good. Anisawa Meito better sound friggin' GAR.
Like byrc, if any of the jokes are changed, it will be the end of the world. If there are jokes that may not make much sense to some, there should be explanations that appear, like in afk's subs.

I've heard better, and I've heard worse. I'll wait to pass final judgment until I've actually sat through an episode or two of the dub, hopefully without having to stab myself in the eardrum with an icepick.
I've been tossing these peoples salad all around Youtube (I'm exaggerating but you know what I mean) and no disrespect to the offical dub but IMO this fandub (yeah I know) is 9000 times better.

First: byrc, shut up, we're talking about whether we think it's good, not if dubs are all bad or not.
Second: did anyone notice that they're using the same VA for Konata as they did for Haruhi? at least they're mimicking that aspect and she seems to fit at least fairly well...
I agree with serial's and TessR's comments though, the voices are at least slightly above average choices even though Kagamii does seem to sound a little guy-ish... but it's a bit early to rate the dub when they've only shown us a handful of scenes and not even the really funny ones. Plus, I agree Anisawa Meito better sound insanely gar!
As for the jokes, I don't mind them so much when they just slightly localize them in some shows, but for the most part (especially in this case) it'd be best if they just leave them in their original state I think.
Okay, the Konota voice on that Youtube link is AWFUL! Was that Nall the white dragon doing the voice on that one?
The voices on the others were allright, I especially thought the voice for Kagami was dead on.
And some of you sub purists need to realize that North American VAs try to voice the CHARACTER, not the original voice actor. Nothing gets my feathers ruffled more than someone bitching that Wendee Lee voiced Haruhi Suzumiya instead of Aya Hirano.
See I think the problem is that these American anime companies almost never look to other voice actors (VA's) besides the ones they know because I'm assuming they are good friends with them.
Thats why you can recognize these peoples voices 95% of the time in most animes. Instead of getting some new talent thats right for the part (and age!) of the show they give it to, for example, Spike Spencer because he needs a quick buck (then again who can blame them).

I dunno man, the same thing happens in Japanese dubs too. Have you SEEN the resume of Nobuyuki Hiyama or Katsuyuki Konishi? The Japanese seiyu get just as much overexposure as the English ones.
But the thing with Japanese voice actors is that even if they did like 50 shows, they try to change their voices more, and since there is a lot more animes in Japan they're more "spread out". I don't really care about that anyway since I can just watch with subs, but maybe it's one of the reasons anime is not that popular in North America.
HAHAHA oh wow. I've only seen one episode of LS (first one, which is probably why I haven't finished the series...) but this dub makes me want to watch the rest of it. Sounds pretty subdued for American voice acting, which is kinda nice. I think it fits the slice-of-life theme.
But what the hell, I haven't seen the series so I don't know what I'm talking about. Do want, though. Sounds pretty win.
I am not sure, but konata sounds like the english dub version of haruko, from flcl.
And Tsukasa could be the same one who did the english speaking for Ninamori. (also flcl) Both of course with slightly adjusted voice.

Konata is voicd by Wendee Lee (Haruhi, Fei Valintine from Bebop), and Tsukasa is voiced by Michelle Ruff (Chi from Chobits, Rukia Kuchiki)
Haruka is voiced by Kari Wahlgren who does Kagami in Lucky star and Ninamori is Melissa Fahn who doesn't do any Lucky Star voice, but does Edward from Bebop and Gaz from Invader Zim.
And this marks Bandai Entertainment's inevitable end in America. Anybody of your remember why GENEON closed? Don't you remember the glut of their releases here that catered to an JAPANESE audience that was set in JAPAN? Cultural sensibilities and jokes in the land of the Rising Sun don't translate very well over here in the stars and stripes.
ADV even tried to rewrite the Entire plot for one series to try and sell it here.. to no success I believe. Otakus walked away and casuals ignored it.
I sent a email to Bandai when I found out that LS was being ported over and pleaded to them to stop this foolish course. I have watched the entire show and I laughed at the physical jokes and chuckled at a few of the spoken. But I must of missed at least 60% of the cultural ones not connected to the Otaku (Initial D being a example).
how can a average America connect to this story? It's too adult for children and a teenager wont get it and give it no notice. Don't even consider Adults into this. This will fail.
