Atlus USA responds to Persona 4 Arena's region-lock woesBy now you may have heard that Persona 4 Arena would be region-locked for its European and North American releases, making it one of the few PS3 games ever to be that way (almost all Xbox 360 games are region-locked by default). It was doubtless an unusual move, especially for Atlus, which thrives on the same market that loves to import games, and many were worried that this could be the start of an unfortunate trend. They also noted that online play for the title would remain global, so there would be no impact Thankfully, Atlus has responded to the concerns in a letter, explaining why this had to happen, and clarifying that it will not be the new norm, placing the blame squarely on the price differences between Japanese games and the rest. Long story short: Persona 4 Arena is more or less an identical product to the Japanese version (down to including Japanese-language audio options), and happens to be launching a mere two weeks after the Japanese version, so Atlus HQ (in Japan) had the foreign versions region-locked to keep Japanese players paying their higher prices. That means, that if anyone should be feeling shafted by this unfortunate decision, it's those living in Glorious Nippon (sorry Elliot!). Read the full text of Atlus' letter below. It's worth a lead, and I applaud Atlus USA for being so forthright about the reasoning behind the move. If only the Activisions and EAs and Namco Bandais of the world were so transparent.
