AX 10: May'n and Megumi Nakajima concert and photos

AX 10: May'n and Megumi Nakajima concert and photos photo

As you may well know, Megumi Nakajima and May'n -- known to most of you as the lovely anime idols Ranka Lee, and Sheryl Nome, respectively -- performed a live concert at the Nokia Theater this weekend. To put it simply, the concert was absolutely phenomenal. Both ladies were full of energy, and didn't slow down one bit.

While a majority of the songs were from Macross Frontier, as expected, they each surprised the crowd with new songs, unrelated to the series itself, and even had a few surprises in store for us.

Check out a detailed summary and our photos after the break.

Much akin to their respective characters, May'n seemed a bit more sexy, wearing a simple black vest and a pair of shorts, and showing off her talent with not only in singing but also with dancing. Megumi on the other hand was a bit more adorable, wearing a fluffy blue and white dress with a bright pink and yellow petticoat -- it was very Ranka-esque to say the least.

May'n opened the show with "Welcome to my FanClub's Night," which was actually quite fitting, all things considered. It was absolutely adorable when she stopped for a moment before her next song to announce that it was first time in America. She even put the mic into her pocket and formed the letters "LA" with her fingers, which you can see in our gallery below. She continued on with "Northern Cross" and "Universal Bunny," the latter a song that was from the theatrical version of Macross Frontier.

Following that were two new songs that I was unfamiliar with, but needless to say, listening to them makes me feel bad for not keeping up with her career aside from Macross Frontier. I really need to go out and buy these CDs now, because they were THAT good. Some of the other tracks she performed include "Infinity", "Iteza Gogo Kuji Don't be Late", and of course the very powerful and emotional "Diamond Crevasse."

May'n then brought out Megumi Nakajima, and performed a slightly arranged version of  "What 'bout my Star." It was a pretty fantastic duet, and afterward, May'n exited the stage. Megumi now took center stage with the ever so adorable song "Anata no Oto," complete with some cute muppet-like hand gestures. The audience became really excited when she performed  "Ninjin Loves You Yeah!" (aka the Carrot Song,) and she even improvised a few lines about how happy she was to be in Los Angeles -- it was so cute.

Later, she sang her version of the classic Lynn Minmei song "Watashi no Kare wa Pilot." Of course, no Ranka concert would be complete without the infamous "Seikan Hikou." She had the entire audience doing Ranka's famous "kira!" hand gesture.

So what about that mysterious guest that was mentioned the other month? As some of you guessed, it was none other than Yoko Kanno herself! She came out during the tail-end of the "Seikan Hikou," and was dancing alongside Megumi. Afterward, she seated herself at a piano that was idly-sitting on stage throughout the entire concert -- Megumi even joked in Japanese about how she wasn't sure why it was there.

The lights dimmed as Megumi performed an a capella of "Aimo," the beautiful, yet haunting, melody from Macross Frontier. Kanno then surprised the audience as she began to play "Voices" from Macross Plus, as Megumi provided the vocals which later transitioned into an arrangement of "Ai no Ether," and "Ai Obeteimasu ka," which also brought May'n to the stage. Finally, both she and Megumi performed an acoustic version of "Diamond Crevasse," after which Yoko Kanno left the stage, leaving the two singers to finish to the concert with their powerful renditions of "Lion," and "Triangular."

To sum it up, the concert was fantastic. Both May'n and Megumi are lovely performers and we can only hope they'll return at some point -- perhaps if Macross Frontier ever gets properly licensed. It'd be nice to give others who weren't fortunate enough to attend Anime Expo this year a chance to see them live.

Sheryl kicks Ranka's ass......But either way, I wish I was there :(
FML. I've seen them at budokan...on youtube. so awesome.
That was a fun event. Sound was great and everything on stage had energy. Too tired to remember which song, but it was funny when the backup dancers for May'n did air guitars. Felt a little bad for Megumi when she did songs from her own albums as crowd was mostly dead during those songs. They were good songs too. Crowd failed キラッ☆... wayyy too quiet and stiff audience participation all over. Actually, they did get loud when Yoko Kanno went on stage and for the last two songs.
I would have loved to be there!
I love Megumi! She looks very cute in those photos~
I had so much fun at the concert! I admit, I got a bit emotional when they started playing "Voices", because it's one of my most favorite songs ever. I wasn't expecting that one to show up! Wonderful performance over all!
Everybody (including me) cried, screamed and went crazy over these two lovely ladies. I'm very tired of how people kept saying "oh she's way better than her" because they complement each other and have different beautiful voices. These concert proved that, and I feel so lucky for having been there.

@Pitmaker: it was mostly one half going crazy and the other half just sitting quietly, I wish they had offered to sell glow sticks instead of junk food, so everybody could've at least waved it.
Do you guys have any video recording or where I can get it because when I went to the concert some f*cking usher kept getting in my way and ruin half of the parts when May'n was singing.
@network19 Sorry bro, we didn't shoot video for this.
wished i went :(
Best concert I've EVER been to!!! I got to meet them both and got my ticket signed! ^-^ Best part of AX 2010! ^-^
Was happy to be there. No one could have kept me out of the room.
It was such and awesome concert. I was able to get audio only of Diamond Crevasse. Got to meet May'n, Megumi, & KYAA Konishi as well. May'n told me I looked cute as White Bunny Sheryl. And Konishi added Ozma Lee to his second autograph for me. I got to ask May'n a question about working with Kanno-San and she ends up being the special guest at the concert. I was in fangirl heaven.
