AX 11: Local news struggles to comprehend Mikunopolis

AX 11: Local news struggles to comprehend Mikunopolis photo

So! Mikunopolis happened, and it was awesome. Besides being awesome, it happened in America, where Miku isn't as big...yet. Therefore, it was only natural that local news outlets pick it up, to fill in their mandatory "human interest" block. Or in this case, Vocaloid interest.

Such was the case with KTLA, which performed a decent enough job of highlighting this strange Japanese cultural curio. Like most mainstream news coverage it still suffers from some of the misconceptions about why Vocaloids are a thing, but Miku's label as a "virtual diva" is as good a shorthand as any. At least they didn't make any jokes about robot overlords or somesuch.

Check out the report below.

Oh boy, time for the media to talk about something they don't understand again.
Around two minutes in-first time I've heard that particular mispronunciation of manga.
'Manja'... I lol'd.
"manja" instead of manga lol. i watched the whole thing on youtube this morning in HD 1080p... I still don't get it.The technology is neat for the hologram but you're still listening to an mp3 [except the instruments]
Mass media cluelessness is the only upshot of these things.
I ain't NEVER heard it pronounced "Manja". I'm not the one to usually laugh at mispronunciation, but that shit was hilarious.
And here I thought I was being clever with "magna". I never thought to call it that.
A-nymes and Manjas. Gotta get on those.
I hate local news stations' style of speaking and presentation. I guess they do it that way so the largest number of people can comprehend what they're saying, but it gets on my nerves. Also disliked the douchebags who showed up in the middle of the interview.
Is it just me or are they resonating in ignorance and stupidity...
Obviously, Japanese media can be pretty bad sometimes,
this is pretty bad though...
Seriously, "manja" convention?
We are "Miku's people"?
Just listen to their tone when mentioning anything Otaku-related...
Retarded journalists should learn stuff about what they talk about and not just read stuff. And those are the same clueless, low IQ, retarded stupid journalists that keeps giving bad press about video games and animes. Can you really trusr those people? lol
No need to bash super hard on these guys. They just saw a unique story and jumped on it, probably without much research. They probably never saw or heard of ANY of this before tonight.

isn't manja another word for weed?
@Sanori and Mooshie, you will learn soon enough that people are fascinated by anime fans for some reason. I mean, you can expect them to have the same sort of tone as a hardcore anime fan, but I honestly think the reported was genuinely interested in what was going on. Not to the point where he is gonna go home and get all Miku's albums, but he seemed like he was having fun.

As for "manja" I loled. At first I wasn't sure I heard that right though until I read the comments and saw that "manja" was really said.
Why must the normal people do this?
I'm hearing a LOT of people bitching about how these "ignorant retards" are shitting on our hobby or something, but the video itself is nothing but positive. Considering the fragile state of the industry, it's GREAT to get media exposure like this. Of course the reporters don't know what they're talking about - that's the fucking point: they are introducing our hobby to new potential consumers.

Everyone just quit being goddamn hipsters. You bemoan the fact that "normal people" don't respect your hobby and then lynch them for expressing an interest. Don't you realize your insistence on being labelled outcasts is KILLING the industry? Is that what you want?
Because the normal people are being normal. "WTF IS THIS??? IT'S FUCKING WEIRD!!" Don't worry, they'll move on eventually and continue to be insane. ;)
@tehwexxl0rz:
If it's as positive as you say, they would do well to research them and not make them look any worse than they do. Imagine if someone unfamiliar with everything presented saw this and asked their bookstore for manjas to start with. If they were in earshot of the regular readers, they would be on the news the next day. Ignorant promotion is no better than ignorant slander, because it doesn't help the image the exact way the insiders want it to.

That is not my opinion, but watch at least one person here agree with it.
@tehwexxl0rz I was thinking the same thing. All these negative comments, but this was actually a really well done news segment for a bunch of newscasters who have no clue about any of this. Outside of him saying manja, they actually treated everything with respectful curiosity than the sarcastic undertones many news outlets would spin on it.
@G-Nitro I was also struck by how respectful they were! The reporter didn't even snap at the Anonymous guys who were making asses of themselves trying to ruin his broadcast.

@The-Excel Can you reference a single fact the news team got wrong other than the pronunciation of one unfamiliar word? I think you know your fantasy bookstore scenario is preposterous.... Any employee who wasn't an elitist prick would simply point the customer to the manga department and it would end at that. (Re: "Ignorant promotion is no better than ignorant slander, it doesn't help the image the exact way the insiders want it to.") What you're describing isn't promotion at all; it's a circle-jerk. Good press is NOT AT ALL about making "insiders" feel warm and fuzzy; it's about inviting the outsiders to join the party.
I was honestly expecting them to report in a condescending tone at least, but that was pretty good.
My God anonymous screws up everything don't they. Even poorly done live interviews.
Definitely siding with tehwexxl0rz on this one. People, stop being damn hipsters - they gave the whole thing a rather.... surprisingly fair description, aside from the reasonable mispronunciations. You guys should try watching the news sometime, it's pretty rare they give a fair chance to stuff normal people would consider weird.
Well when you are a journalist and want to inform people, at least try to know what you're talking about before going on air. Even if it's positive, it doesnt means that's great.

Truat me I had a minor in journalism at university before I changed to psychology and you must be accurrate and reliable if you do this job. You can see it's clearly rushed and they are not informed about what they are supposed to talk about asnd it's sad considering it's their job doint that and they get money talking about stuff they don't know about.
(sorry for the damn typos, blame my keyboard, I would correct them but no edit button)
Not sure why they are surprised, Gorillaz have had concerts like this too.
@Heero Yuy:
You have it all wrong. We can't afford to let even more people in. Don't you realize that if we let more people in on the secret, it won't be a secret anymore??!!
@Chicken008 Not on the Plastic Beach tour.
NORMALS JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND
Always better than the segment from that dutch drugs and sex information program at the yaoicon.

Also Miku is a international superstar. The people must know of her by now.
Here's a good news segment I found. :D
THis one made me smile. ^^
http://news.yahoo.com/japan-3-d-pop-avatar-real-world-hit-142420421.html
Amusing segment, they seemed to get most stuff right. Anonymous trolling as usual.
Hmmm why is everyone mispronouncing the name.....wtf thats a insult
@draggt: I cant tell if you're being serious or not but if you are then please don't pretend that you have never in your life mispronounced names before. Im pretty sure you've had a Hispanic/Jamaican/Indian/whatever race friend or college whose name you messed up even once. It happens, all the time. Get over it.
I don't really get it, either.
That was actually a pretty decent segment. I mean, they expressed how they found the whole thing novel and slightly incomprehensible, but is that so wrong? To be fair, it IS novel, and it IS in fact, slightly incomprehensible. Not everyone has the same cultural exposure as you. There are plenty of things in this world that folks are into that you would scorn. Let's not lie to ourselves.

Live and learn people. Live and learn.
@zeroduality Im Majoring in Japanese but that is besides the fact lol. I mean, I still mispronounce a few words here and there, but even before I took Japanese, I can tell the difference between "Hatsuni" and "Hatsune" lol
Wow, those normies can't pronounce ANYTHING right! >< Hatsuni and Manja??? The worst I ever got was 'Meinga' then I learned it's true pronounciation was MAHNga. Ugh, and their reaction to the Otaku is almost mean in a way. We're cool ppl! And now what? Our awesome, underground society af Anime and Manga has been exposed and now we'll be surrounded by noobs and posers... Thanks, dumbass journalists.
