Bandai Visual USA has put out a press release announcing that it will be releasing the currently airing series Shigofumi and true tears on DVD beginning in May. When I read that headline, I was excited since both true tears (P.A. Works) and Shigofumi (J.C. Staff) have been pretty good so far — however, there's a price to be paid for them to be released overseas so quickly.
Each 13 episode series is planned for a 7-disc release, with each 2-episode disc priced at $39.99, each 1-episode disc (Volume 1 of true tears, Volume 7 of Shigofumi) priced at $29.99, putting the cost of buying each complete series at $270. If there were more extras (like Haruhi) and more episodes per disc I would be more willing to pay a premium, but as things are I doubt this R2-like pricing and release structure will go over well with your average R1 otaku who is used to 4 (or more) episodes per disc at $30 or less.
Kudos to Bandai for trying to release an anime quick for the starving westerners...but this shit doesnt fly.
