Behold, the Attack on Titan and Marvel crossover nobody asked for
I've been getting back into reading comic books of late, the fabled "ame-comi" from across the Pacific, and one fun part of American comic book culture is the practice of "Free Comic Book Day", when comic stores and publishers distribute special issues for free, to attract new readers and promote new stories.
Marvel was doing its level best to push its big Secret Wars event, but perhaps more surprising than finding out the whole Marvel Universe is effectively ending is this odd crossover: Attack on Titan versus The Avengers. The brief story, printed last year in Japan's BRUTUS magazine, pits Marvel's finest most marketable, including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye against the titans of Hajime Isayama's mega-popular manga, with a surprise appearance by the Guardians of the Galaxy at the story's end.
The titans, on the other hand, consisted of the all-star team of the, er, weird-looking one, the female one, the armored-looking one, and the really really big one. They're gonna have to get some better code names if they're looking to join the House of Ideas, I think.
Honestly, it's a bit of a throwaway story, despite some fun-looking art by penciler Gerardo Sandoval. It's a weird little thing to consider how manga and American comics can interact, which puts me in the hope of seeing a more substantial, thoughtful crossover in the future. I'd certainly love to see how the angry teens of the Scouting Legion would react to the more colorful crews to be found in western superhero titles, that's for sure!
