Why waste your time debating and being preoccupied with a show you hate? The ultimate insult you can give a show is to not give it one iota of attention and let it fade away... I had completely forgotten about Angel Beats and now you've got it in my head. How dare you, sir.
Well, first. It is understandable, of course, to assume that everyone on the internet is a dude, but I am, in fact, a girl. No harm done, just a clarification. There's not much to say here, but let us respond anyway with more words than necessary.
@Mari Hikiko
Why didn't you capitalize the "is"? Also, under no circumstances do I wish to diss Furuba--had originally written out my explanation but wanted to keep things short. The choice of picking that volume to burn was because it was a tattered copy I had; Fruits Basket is absolute love. And I've never watched Becki Cruel--I don't even know who she is really, having only seen posts of her here and ignoring them.
& @Bacon:
It's important to use the correct words. I do not "hate" AB!, rather loathe it. And ignoring an anime I loathe that is as evidently beloved as Angel Beats! "fade away" is....not...possible. How did you forget about it anyway? Because personally, I see it everyday; most notably owning Saimoe to my eternal despair.
The ultimate insult would be flaming it so hard and so well, that the well-reasoned out fans will find their reasoning to be wrong and convert to my reasoning. And thus the show will fall into the "fail" category by majority's vote. My ignoring it does nothing to insult it whatsoever.

Here I thought I was calling your bluff on the Saimoe post. I apparently was not... Dare I ask what exactly did Angel Beats! do that offended you so strongly? As things stand the only thing I see you "flaming" is an unrelated manga.
If you want a defense for the show I posted my own blog on the topic back at the end of June.

I watched some three or four episodes. Felt like it was cashing in on Haruhi's popularity, and I just wasn't impressed.
There was that one character voiced by Miyuki Sawashiro, though.

@Lifesong:
Augh damnit, way to phrase that. Okay, to answer immediate question; I actually was indeed offended by AB! beyond just being irritated to the point of running around and kicking shit for hours. And what offended me was aforementioned cheapness, blinding conceit, and the whole "reincarnation" kick.
*two hours later* Damn it! I can't seem to write out anything correctly! Yesterday all I wanted was to kick some ass with my reasoning for every little thing--especially Iwasawa which I was pleased to read your blog and see you started with. But, as a person, I just naturally fail. So I'll try and say something from a safe distance and we'll stay away from my line-for-line analyzations of the GDM singles which, as an epiphany I just had, tells me I may be fucking wrong anyway.
Cheapness. First, let's be shallow. It's cheap for; the character designs are pieces of shit--changing every other episode with horrifically flat with hands drawn by third graders. The supposed amazing animation everyone was looking forward to from those awesome trailers LIED as it's all just flash. And the SOUNDTRACK! Oh my word, someone call Nanase, this is a fucking tragedy. I don't think a single real instrument was ever used--even tempted after listening to the piece of work into believing that the piano is fake too. Unbelievable.
Cheapness can also be seen in the simplicity of everything. Otonashi working to become a doctor; NO. I don't care how sweet his little sister was, when you spend that many years doing nothing you do NOT have the conviction to dedicate yourself to one goal like that. That was why, before My Song, I adored and respected Iwasawa so much--because even SHE got sick of playing guitar for a life all bloody day; she wanted more time to just sit and do nothing, and like, how was playing guitar beneficial anyway? (This is coming from Alchemy.) Sorry, Otonashi. INVALID.
Let's move on to conceit; conceit for being cheap and thinking it can get away with that. Yuri isn't Haruhi, Otonashi is--the son of a bitch thinks he's God. And he gets a song, too to further confirm this; the OP I am convinced is entirely his--translated it myself. 'Course, must say, I dropped the show after the tenth episode due to a thorough mindfuck which just shut down my patience for this piece of shit.
Because, that episode, had a lot of the reincarnation boat floating around. Which I didn't get at ALL. After watching Hinata explain some weird scenario to Pink Yui, the time for which had already passed being that they're dead, I ran out of the house and stayed there for hours, trying to figure out what the fuck had just transpired. Eventually, I got it, vomited a little and decided that after pulling a cheap stunt like that, there really was no hope for Angel Beats!.
As, up to that point, I was spending hours every week scribbling theories into notebooks; skipping classes even. When I thought AB! had really screwed itself on being a touching, Maeda-like story, I drifted to the satire idea; this all going back and forth constantly because I didn't want to lose hope entirely just yet. Until episode ten. At which time everything fell to pieces and I realized the ENTIRE show had this safety net. That was why it could be this cheap, this conceited, so full of cut corners, ignored questions, massacre of a show. Because no matter what, these idiots got another go at life.
Which made Brave Song make a hell of a lot more sense and pissed me off into a rage that lasted about week. Then I played Muramasa, came to the happy conclusion that I couldn't really be so angry because this is a typical Japanese thing; like rain = tears. Which, actually, also appears in Angel Beats!.
But even with that, my irritation, my rage, my mindfuck, this epic feeling of betrayal remained and more hours I spent, flinching at everything with AB! on it but also obsessing over it.
I could continue on, but lemme just...not, and wrap it up now because I've had yet another epiphany. Probably what, at the core of all fucktastic things such as weather perfectly suited to every event, a constant cycle of antagonists, Yuri's absolutely epic and total stupidity in everything... What keeps me attached, flitting between rage, depression, and mindfuck is the reincarnation gig. Because that, more than anything, cheapens life. And AB! won't admit it.

Well... tone wise, not necessarily content wise, if that makes sense.
"ARGH I HATE THIS" straight to "YES I LOVE THAT"....mood whiplash, if you will.
"ARGH I HATE THIS" straight to "YES I LOVE THAT"....mood whiplash, if you will.
But...but... Where? The only compliment I gave was my original adoration and respect for Iwasawa--of course implying then that she kept to tradition of her show and then failed very hard all over the floor.
I'm just pointing out the massive contrast between the rant and the last part.
Oh, never mind. Strike my words from memory if what I mean still isn't clear to you.

Sorry for all this spam then as I'm apparently just quite dense--did you mean then just the comment on Miyuki? For her, I've more than once popped over to AB!'s official site just to listen My Song's episode preview for her epic, gorgeous scream.
And if not that, well then, I really have no idea and let that be the end of it? Awesome. Nino ftw.
And if not that, well then, I really have no idea and let that be the end of it? Awesome. Nino ftw.
Okay wow that is quite a rant. I honestly don't understand where you are coming from with your complaints about the characters. Otanshi was a very believable character to me as was most of the cast. The way Angel Beats! pulled off believable characters in an unfamiliar or unbelievable situation was done wonderfully and so I simply disagree with you there.
"Because no matter what, these idiots got another go at life." That's not something you can call a safety net that is the entire premise of the show. The cast is stuck in an afterlife with painful memories and no real knowledge of why they are there or what they should do. Or what will happen to them if they disappear. Its all speculation both by the cast and for the sake of the viewers. If you where trying to make sense of something that was never there well I can understand why you got frustrated.
I also don't see this as a "mind fuck series at all if you want a mind fuck watch something like Higurashi or NGE maybe throw in some Elfen Lied. Angel Beats! did require some thought to understand but not a PHD as you make it sound.
There are animation mistakes as you pointed out but most of them are easy to miss and I had to search to find most of them. I expect the BD release cleaned things up. I do not know that for fact but I expect it is true.
I loved the music from the series... every moment of it.. nothing came out of the show musically that did not appeal to me in some way and so I can't fathom why someone would go of on it for being "fake" but to each there own I guess.
This is opinion and I am open to debate on it but as I see it each of Key's animated works have an underlying philosophical or religious undertone. In Air it was Shinto with reincarnation. In Kanon it was Christianity with miracles. In Clannad it was quantum physics or something similar with alternate realities. In Angel Beats all 3 themes get mixed together.
Quoted from the wiki "According to Maeda, the theme of the series is "life", which in Angel Beats! is depicted as a precious and wonderful thing, despite the characters in Angel Beats! who fight against their fate."
Angel Beats! dumps you in the middle of things and never explains many of them but it does explain most of what the cast themselves are aware of with the exception of Kanade who plays the role of a quiet Kuudere very well in my opinion.
The execution is part of the magic of the show you may not like it but the execution is not inherently a plot hole. The only major unexplained plot device that I felt deserved clarification was the Angel Maker program itself. Which is also not a plot hole in and of itself because of the fact that it was never even addressed. I would have liked to see it and was genuinely curious about it but it was unnecessary for sake of the plot.

Shall be responding to each of your paragraphs in order, disregarding the first one as it's too broad for my smallish capacity to write coherently.
1) It is so totally a safety net! And yes, these idiots ARE trapped in an unknown world with crappy memories of their perfectly unfair and thus very entertaining lives/deaths--so why doesn't anyone care? The cast of Angel Beats! makes me ill in that there is only a very small number of characters chosen to be actual people; the others are endearing throwaways. Like TK, Shiina, Irie, Noda... Would having a show based around some two dozen kids being epically emo be pretty damn boring and annoying? Yes.
But what is more annoying is the LACK of speculation. Yes, /I/ WAS speculating and trying to figure shit out, whereas the cast did nothing but play baseball, eat udon, and be generally pretty stupid. Und ja, I was frustrated at the lack of finding ANYTHING worthwhile. Because, if Angel Beats! wants to be a show about life, then I want someone to CARE. And caring takes a lot more than random confessions to the new guy, torn and bloodied stockings, and a bet that, even if life fucked you the first time, next time will be swell, so will you marry me then and I'll oil your wheelchair?
2) Well, first, how is Higurashi mindfucking? It's just a bunch of cute girls laughing manically and swinging around machetes through dungeons filled with nails when they're not playing cards. < What that is, is standard and well done horror. A mindfuck is something shocking, confusing, and WTF-inducing. ..Alright, maybe some can call Higurashi mindfuck or those others which I haven't seen so can't talk about, but what I thought was mindfucking about Angel Beats! was its actual LACK of good mindfucking material.
e.g. The creators know shit about what it means to live and to die, from either a first person perspective or from one affected so they threw in reincarnation. That was mindfucking for me. Even the idea of an afterlife put my head through a warp but that obviously had to be accepted right away and without questioning being the simple setting. AB! could have been so much more. And that, way past mindfucking, makes me very sad. Especially because that it remains so popular.

Cover art for the Little Braver single. Look at it; that was printed out and distributed all over the country and it still looks like crap. Her face, her hands, her weirdo chain bracelets, her sleeve..
http://warp.cc/kiw/82bf6163.png
Pretty concert scene? My dead grandfather has better legs than those.
4) Not a matter of my simply saying it's fake for not liking the tracks but rather, the instruments used, are literally...fake. Though most of the time also nonexistent being that the score primarily relies on beepy and sawing noises. There is one track I must honestly exempt from that, though--track 8 of CD1, I believe. Though the moment was the deciding travesty, the music was nice.
5) Yep, and religion makes for all sorts of shitty, lying outta your ass stories, don't it? No credit.
6) I repeat; the creators know nothing about life. Looking back up to my very obviously biased #5, I'd like to say that you should judge a song by its album. Angel Beats! sold itself as a fight against unjust lives and untimely deaths in a purgatory realm. But there was no real fight; only stupid kids derping around with less purpose or ideals than the K-ON!! girls. In the list of themes, I'd like to see "religion" so I'm not bitch-slapped with a child's hope of reincarnation to destroy all my hours of week-wrecking analyzing. It's absolutely ridiculous the amount of time I have spent trying to come up with a defense for this show only to realize there just isn't one; not judging by what it is.
Life IS precious. Because you only get one, and it doesn't last very long. Angel Beats! destroyed that for a quick and shallow love story.
7) Unfortunately, most of the cast disappears without any real resolution besides a low number of episodes left and Angel is pretty fucking dense not to mention the whole, Otonashi regaining his memories through his heart, is just really, really weird. That's Higurashi shit right there. Though the title is clever for it, I'll admit.
8) -rolls eyes- The Angel Maker? Jeez. Why didn't anybody remember up the Batmobile so they can go bust some walls around that world? Also, plot. What plot? This anime couldn't even hold down a villain. It would've been better to BEGIN with the sentiment that an antagonist was unnecessary rather than shoot out one after the other. Or, have one of the many kids in there--kids who should really probably be quite bothered THAT THEY ARE FUCKING DEAD--start blowing shit up, really questioning what the fuck was going on. Rather than playing cards and writing songs about Eric Clapton. (Really; wtf.)
Though honestly, the first sentence of your last paragraph confuses the hell outta me so I'm fairly certain my response was quite fail. What?

More like a comment war taking place in a blog.
Though if we're being noble in order to win (I want to win.) then I must amend something. I said that, for what it is, meaning chosen genre and the like, Angel Beats! fails; that line coming off my religion flame and reinforced by saying that, while religion/reincarnation does rule the show, it was not broadcasted as a theme and therefore does not count. Well--THAT was said also after saying that anything based around realty-defying religion (Not religion in general, just the part that says...you can part a sea by raising a hand.) to uphold a story is discredited; no value there whatsoever. Which was just me being a brutal, biased asshole--I'm really totally fine with religion; blaming this on the influence of Angel Beats!.
Point of reiterating all of that thrilling stuff; just...no flame to religion meant. And being that AB! was sold with its central meaning as "life" and failed at that--being what it is, a show about life, it fails.
Did that clarify anything or was it just a bunch of natter...

not at all.
I understand your criticism and point of view(s), but I just guess they don't bother me enough to say the whole show sucked.

Many if not all of your insults seem to be aimed at things I liked about the show and so we will simply have to agree to disagree on them.
Angel Beats! plot and the mechanics between the characters that made it such a beautiful thing obviously went over your head which is a shame. It seems to me that your disillusions about what you wanted the show to be stopped you from seeing it for what it was. I can't make you enjoy it so I won't try but neither do I understand your enraged hatred as it seems incredibly unwarranted in my mind.
As for the images you linked.. sorry I don't really see them as being the disgusting filth you paint them as. Call me crazy but I like the artwork on the Little Braver single.
We could argue until we are both blue in the face but I for one do not really think Angel Beats! needs any more defense then what I have given it so despite how much I enjoy talking about the series I really have little left to add to this blog.
