Breaking news: FUNimation licenses FLCL for DVD, Blu-ray photo

I know some of you had lost all hope of ever seeing this series in high def, but it seems as though you're all in luck. FUNimation Entertainment announced earlier today that they've procured the FLCL license and plan on re-releasing the modern classic. Rather than releasing each OVA separately, all six be bundled together in a single set for DVD and Blu-ray, and should be hitting the shelves sometime towards the end of the year--no official release date has been set.

While I was never the biggest fan of the series, I know that it holds a special place in many of your hearts. I was a little worried that we might never see another US release after Broccoli's video venture, Synch-Point, decided to go on an indefinite hiatus. To be honest though, I was never really convinced it was really a hiatus, and I fully expect that we'll never hear or see anything released by them ever again. Thankfully FUNimation managed to snag the license away, saving it from collecting dust.

I have to admit, I'm curious as to how many of you plan on picking up the Blu-rays. For it to be released in that format, you'd think they'd need to at least clean it up a bit. Are you looking forward to it?

KICKASS.

Though I probably wouldn't buy it in Blu-ray, since it just feels troublesome to me. I'm not obsessed enough over high-quality to want to buy blu-ray.
I'm down for the Blu-ray, because I'm a BD addict. I can see it causing big problems though. They way people have freaked out over the Samurai Champloo transfer is worrisome. It could be the same, because apparently FLCL was a digital SD production, one of Gianax's first digital productions. So there might not be much upgrading that can happen, aside from simply presenting the exiting material letterboxed and upscaled. I personally am fine with it, but I know many out there are not.

On the subject of DNR, since it's an older show that couple possibly use some cleanup, it might be a good thing. I cant think of any big faux-noise scene that would be a mistake cleaning up. So I can't see DNR messing with too much of FLCL.

And it all depends on if Funi is doing this on their own, or if they plan on working with Gainax to do some kid of remastering. If only to give it more solid lines and a richer color palette.

In any case, this is going to be a very interesting release. Cant wait to see what they deliver.
This is the best news i've heard in forever.
Yeah, I definitely don't want a crappy upscale, so hopefully this will be a proper Blu-ray. Fingers crossed, FUNi!
sweet sauce . . . first ANN tells me K-ON season 2 is a confirm and now a FLCL blue-ray. the otaku gods are pleased
This is the best news of the year. It can only go downhill from here.
If there was any one anime I'd watch in Blu-ray it's FLCL. I remember being amazed by the visuals back when I first caught it on Cartoon Network.

I'm still not set on getting a Blu-ray player, though, but rest assured if I ever do this will be top priority.

"Can you feeeeeeeeeeel!!!
Can you feel zah hybrid rainbow!!"
I wouldn't hold high expectations on the BD release. Funi's BD releases have been kind of eh on their upscaled ones. As long as it doesn't look worse than the DVD and keep the synch-point dub, I'll be happy enough.

Of course they could actually bust their balls and make a GOOD BD release (if King Record(?) lets them), but that's beyond my expectation of them.
I actually never watched the anime (Don't kill me, I got the manga!), so this is on my must-have list.
Glad to hear it is back in print. I have the boxset version already, but I might consider the blu-ray at some point. I do wonder what price point they are thinking of selling it at.
I've literally just started watching it this evening. First thoughts - 'WTF?'
Blu ray.. FLCL!? I'm sold! And there I just went and bought the R2 DVD's a few months ago, damnit.
HELL YEA !!!!!!!! Sweet always wanted to buy it!
This could be awesome, but the following needs to happen:

1) the Japanese audio needs to remain
2) the subtitles need to be in-sync (unlike the Ghost in the Shell 2.0 blu-ray)
3) they'd better not region encode it. Otherwise I'll have to wait ages for someone in the UK to license it (or buy a multi-region blu-ray player from somewhere, which I'm working on)
Couldn't care less about Blu-Ray, I'm just looking forward to getting a DVD version that isn't Synch Point's over-priced release. Now if Bandai would only follow up with their insanely expensive Honneamise releases...
If I can get the Blu-ray for less than $50, I'd buy it. Otherwise I'd download the 1080p rip.
@bobmarleypeople

You could buy a blu ray drive for your PC and use software called anyDVD HD, which lets you remove the region coding. Though these changes will not be present on the disc itself of course, so it wouldn't play elsewhere. However, you can extract the image from the blu ray using anyDVD HD, and thus MAY be able to burn the contents to a blu ray without the region encoding for all round use, I would test it myself if I could. My drive cost me £80 or something, and a blu ray RW drive will probably put you at around £160 at least.

I buy my hardware from "dabs", but you could also try "overclockers UK" or "ebuyer". Google.
At first I was upset I'd have to buy it again, then I was happy that I had to buy it again (but now in HD). Funny how the Otaku mind works out!

A solid title for Funimation, it is sure to sell well.
Will buy.

Depending on the pricetag.
Good god finally. This needed to be released in ANY form. The DVD box-sets on eBay are either overpriced or fake and I can't find it anywhere else.
Judging by everyone's reaction, I'd say the header image was fairly apt.
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

As you may or may not have known, FLCL topped Japanator's Top 50 Anime of the Decade list.

So if you have not seen it... This sounds like the perfect way to school yourself in the Art of AMAZING.
I own the Synch-Point release and I'll probably get it again, just 'cause. I'm wondering if they'll do any of the following: redo the dub or subtitles, add in new extras, get a new master, and/or redo the sound (I would love to see FLCL in surround sound). Here, it's length is actually a selling point, because while I might balk about throwing down the cash for a new version of a series I already own, Funi's FLCL DVD -or- Blu-Ray will undoubtedly be cheaper than what I paid for the Synch Point 3 DVD release (and I didn't even pay MSRP for those). Bonus: the old DVD set could become great loaners to people I want to foist the series on.
Awesome! We just got a BD player and this may be among the first things I buy for it. End of the year seems so far away though... I just got done with one year!
Meh, It's okay. *Waits for Death*
I love Funimation. They're just so AWESOME these days.
Synch Point's release was great. Sure it cost tons, but it had 2 commentaries, kick ass book, a T-Shirt, and other shit. It was well worth the money I paid for it.

If FUNimation redubs it (orignal dubs were great), or just fucks it up in general, I will be pissed.
I am a happy panda. ^_^
My eyebrows are celebrating.
.Watermelon. Or like a panda with a mean face, or like sandals with pressure points drawn on them, or the smell of a blackboard eraser, or a Sunday morning where you wake up and it's raining. Well, I like FLCL more than hard bread
ohhhhhh HELLZ FUCKING YEAH! I'll be buying the blu ray for sure

I'm not happy to hear "towards the end of the year" though, how much must I wait!
