If you've ever watched j-drama and you're into shojo anything, you've likely watched Hana Yori Dango, one of the most loved mangas and dramas of all time. Fans swooned over the leads, Matsumoto Jun of Arashi and Inoue Mao, and with just cause -- they both really nailed their characters in spirit. The only thing is, after you see a drama like HYD, it kind of puts you in that place where you're always waiting for the next drama that will be equally as good ... and it can feel like a long wait inbetween.
Fuji TV's betting on "Natsu no Koi wa Nijiiro ni Kagayaku" for this season as their Getsu 9 winner, which stars Matsumoto Jun (alongside Takeuchi Yuko) as the romantic lead for the first time since Hana Yori Dango. Written by Omori Mika (Buzzer Beat), it places Jun in the role of a young, mediocre actor overshadowed by his father. He literally lands in Yuko's character's lap while skydiving and the relationship begins from there. She is also an older woman -- yow! This ought to make my mouth water.
Fans have already started chattering about the drama, but some are not as positive as others. It seems like we've been in a real quality j-drama drought lately -- even the currently airing Moon Lovers is dropping in ratings, despite big names like Takuya Kimura, Keiko Kitagawa and Shota Matsuda. I'll watch Natsu no when it airs, but I admit I'm sketchy too. Have you seen any j-dramas lately you'd actually recommend?
