Ah, Starship Troopers. Robert A. Heinlein's seminal space marine novel is required reading for any budding sci-fi nerd, aspiring United States Marine (true!), or person looking for Filipino characters in international pop culture (eat it, Casper van Dien!) and it is once more getting itself animated, this time as a CG movie called Starship Troopers: Invasion. It's in the hands of Shinji Aramaki, who ran those CG AppleSeed films. If nothing else, they looked good at the time, which is pretty much all that anyone asks for out of something like Starship Troopers.
This isn't even the very first "anime" Starship Troopers joint, either. Way back in the late '80s Sunrise managed to cough up a 6-episode OAV which managed to be closer to the original book than the 1997 Paul Verhoeven satire (at least I think it was satire).
From the looks of the trailer below, Invasion looks to be mixing its visual cues from other Starship Troopers work. Zerg-before-Zerg-looking arachnids from the 1997 film, but with actual power armor that looks like a cross between a Crysis nanosuit, Halo MJOLNIR gear, with a sprinkling of Jin-Roh's Panzer Cops and Killzone's Helghast, all resulting in a slightly more fascist-looking version of the power armor that was in the other CG Starship Troopers work, Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles.
Call me psyched? My only real question is if Invasion will properly serve as a vehicle for Heinlein's political views, or just be mostly about kickass power armor. Either way it's a net win.
