It's rather interesting. Japan has been warming up significantly to the Xbox 360 as of late. The Xbox original did so bad the first time and clashed with the main tastes that when the 360 first came out, most people were reasonably suspicious. Factor in the fact that you're on Sony and Nintendo's real home turf, and it had a lot of bias against it. But lately it seems Microsoft got their marketing brains in gear and learned to suit the audience better, and as a result they're starting to actually significantly outsell the PS3 as of late (though the PS3 obviously started off with a huge lead).

That said, I think it's almost best to consider the 360 as two animals instead of one. What I mean by that is if you were to compare the games that have made the 360 sell in the US to the games that made it sell in Japan, the preferred genre gap is a black hole deep chasm with a tiny little rock ledge spanning between the two. Halo did pretty good in japan, but it certainly wasn't the console selling out game that idolm@ster or Ace Combat 6 was (and thanks to the DLC plane skins in AC6, US Ace Combat fans have slowly come to understand the giant gap in the two countries' taste as well).

To sum it all up though, I love all three consoles. The PS3 is a ton of fun, for the few great games it has, and for me, I find a sort of indirect compensation in the whole installing another OS on it and using it as a media center and bluray player. The American 360 has a ton of typical fun games - I don't need to tell you guys this. The Japanese 360 has a ton of insane games, "what-were-they-thinking?who-cares!" games, and a lot of taking-a-simple-concept-to-an-extreme games.

To sum it up:

PS3 = Jet
US 360 = Spike/Faye
JP 360 = Ed/Ein

Not entirely correct, in fact, the PS3 is still outselling the 360 2 to 1 weekly, if not more. Just this week was different however, with the release of Star Ocean 4 which sold a rather astonishing 200.000 in its opening weekend and also shipped some extra 360's, barely beating out the PS3 for the first time in 6 months (if I recall correctly).

But MS is definitely doing better than with the original Xbox, that's a given. The 360 also appears in popular culture more than the Xbox ever did, and not even as a lolGaijinconsole-joke. Hayate no Gotoku had an episode where a golden Xbox 360 appeared, even.

About the two different animals: I wonder about that, really. MS is buying a lot of classicly Japanese developers these days (read: Mistwalker), putting in a lot of effort for blockbuster S-E RPG's (Star Ocean and Final Fantasy, almost) and, like you said, even has some Japan-only exclusives now (iDOLM@STER, if my spelling is correct). But even Mistwalker's Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, the Toriyama-Sakaguchi-Uematsu team-up which theoretically should've propelled the 360 to the top of the charts, didn't really convince anyone when they were released. Meanwhile, Halo 3 and GTA appear to be selling just as well as those titles. Makes you think, right?

My point being: the 360 hasn't lost its "Gaijin"-stigma at all. It just appears Japanese gamers are actually, slowly but surely, making a move towards western-developed games. I think most Japanese 360-owners still bought the console just for that. We all have this set image of Japanese gamers wanting nothing but Pokémon (grindan), Monster Hunter (grindan) and Dragon Quest (grindan), but it's not entirely impossible for the Japanese to start liking western games. You'd be surprised at how varied a gamer's taste can be. On top of that, even reverse weeaboos exist.

Actually, the personification of the 360 in this comic got it just right: the original Xbox was an average American girl, as the Japanese see it: large, blonde, loud, etc. The 360-tan is still blonde, but now she's a loli. Geddit?

Anyway, worldwide, I think at the end of each console's lifespan, the ranking will be Wii-PS3-360. Yeah. It may seem strange to a lot of people that I still expect the PS3 to beat the 360, but mind you, worldwide, on a weekly basis, the PS3 has actually been outselling the 360 all along. The US is the only market where the roles are clearly reversed, but I can see that change after the next pricedrop and when titles like GT5 and GoW3 hit.

A lot depends on if the PS3 can take back some of the casual market from the Wii (don't underestimate Eyetoy's role in the PS2's success), but even if they don't, I still don't think there's a lot of room left to grow for the 360 in any area: to the world, the 360's nothing more than a hardcore console, also perfect for online competitive play, though paid for by subscription. Hardcore gamers, the primary crowd for the console, were all quick to pick it up and only need two if MS stops fixing RROD's, so MS needs a new market if it wants to keep on selling. After more than three years in the market, MS still fails to reach that new market, especially outside the US. They're at 28 million consoles right now, and though that's more than the number of PS3's sold, it's not enough to win a war. Not even close.

Whew, that was a long post. Guess I'm more of a gamer than an anime otaku after all.
