Despair: Urusei Yatsura is going out of print

Despair: Urusei Yatsura is going out of print photo

September 30, 2011 will mark the end of an era of sorts for anime, as AnimEigo has confirmed that they won't be renewing their license to Urusei Yatsura, the seminal '80s anime that helped lay the foundations of Japanese cartoon romantic comedy as we know it. It sounds like a fairly specific role, but really, Lum was the original magical girlfriend, more or less. And if you're a fan of all things Mamoru Oshii, I'll have you know that his work directing it was what brought him into the spotlight.

It's not as if it's all going away, though. Urusei Yatsura's just going out of print, meaning they won't be making or selling any more after that. After September 30th, any and all DVD volumes of the series become collector's items. Best you set up your bulk order before then. The prices are pretty cheap on Amazon, last I checked.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, LUM ;A;
Never did watch this, I was aware of it though. May have to if it's going out of print.
It's a shame that so many people haven't heard of this, or watched it. It's still funny, even by today's standards.
I have been wanting to order the entire series ever since I saw it a few years ago.
I guess I now have a compelling reason for wanting to order it ASAP.

Hey ho, hey ho, it's off to rightstuf I go.
chances are that it won't stay out of print very long. I would bet pretty strongly that Funimation or Sentai will rescue the license.

While it's been in print all this time it's also not been very advertised for the new generation. So a license rescue and a good re release would be a no brainer as alot of the younger fans might pick it up considering all that it layed the road work for.
This was the series that got me into anime 15 or so years ago.

That said, the anime does not age that well in terms of quality- kids these days would see episode 1 and reject it on sight, the animation quality was dated even 15 years ago. I would not be surprised if the TV series ends up back in fansubs.

Why not let VIZ Media buy the rights? I mean, they already has the rights to the manga and all of Ms. Takahashi's works! I loved this show! I watch it on YouTube.
Holy BALLS! ...They had Urusei Yatsura on DVD? Since WHEN?? D:
I've only seen a few of the movies, but it's definitely interesting, but I don't have the time to watch a huge stack of dvds and "get it" as it were. Still, it's a shame it's all going out of print, hopefully someone will see the chance to pick it up and re issue 'em.
i wanted to buy it for years, but because it has never been in a reasonably priced boxset, i have passed. There are just too many single volumes...even if the volumes seem cheap there are only 4 episodes per volume and 195 in the series.
@savage

rightstuf.com have had a pretty good deal for it for quite some time.
They're selling five box sets of 10 volumes each, totaling the entire series at 50 volumes.
Each box set costs $80 so the entire series comes in at $400, which in my opinion is a pretty good price.

I have just ordered the entire series myself. Some individual volumes are not in stock though and stands as "On Order From Manufacturer", so might be a while before it arrives.
*looks up Urusei Yatsura. Sees that it's 1 billion episodes long*

*head asplodes*
I watched quite a bit of Urusei Yatsura years ago, and I enjoyed it. The thing with AnimEigo's release is that for a series as long as UY is, it's just not economical to buy for anyone but the super-fan, and while I like UY, I don't like it quite enough for their content-per-disc/pricing scheme. Although, I drug my feet for years with Kimagure Orange Road, but when it was announced that they'd finally be letting the license expire, I rushed to purchase the KoR set, so...who knows what may happen here.
it is easier to just buy it from animeigo, they will give you a discount I believe to be cheaper than buying it from rightstuf.com. and they might be bundles of single volumes at rightstuff, as animeingo only has one or two boxsets listed on their site for sale.

I bought the whole set from them in november last year, I got all 50 volumes, all OVAs and the movies, and lucky for me, I was able to get the second movie from rightsuf before they sold out, it has been out of print for some time now
@mudduck454

Just checked, and it would indeed have been cheaper by about $60-$80.
The problem is, I'm in Europe and they only ship to US/Canada. So Rightstuf was the only available option.

I curse all companies that can't be assed to make available an international option.
Wow good looking out guys, I got into UY ages ago myself so it's best to pick them all up before they're gone.

I kind of want to cry a little bit now.
