Some things you never give consideration to when you're thinking about another culture, and then all of a sudden the differences slap you in the face. That's what I found when I came across this article in the Daily Yomiuri about the DPJ submitting a bill to allow married couples to have separate surnames.
Seems fine, right? Well, they tried this back in 1998, but the LDP was fiercely opposed, saying it would, "damage family unity and lead to the collapse of family relations." So, the same level of doom and gloom we've heard when it came to letting foreigners vote.
I doubt that this measure will actually get shot down in the Diet, seeing as most groups want it to pass, and the LDP won't have the power to stop the measure. So, here's to watching Japan's moral values and the sanctity of their marriages go down the tubes! I'm planning on getting myself a front row seat -- how about you?
Hmm... reminds me of the conservative argument against gay marriage in the United States.
