DS successor confirmed, will have motion control photo

[Originally posted on Destructoid by Jim Sterling]

For the first time, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata has openly discussed a Nintendo DS successor and some of the features that will be included in this two-screened behemoth. While the last DS was a humble system based on a number of gimmicks that served it very well, the next DS will be bringing some real horsepower to the table ... along with motion control.

"[It will have] highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing," Iwata tells Japanese newspaper Asashi Shimbun. Until now, motion tracking devices have been available for the DS in peripheral form. The next generation of DS will include such input as standard.

The prospect of a new DS is exciting, although I hope the motion control isn't over-the-top. It's bad enough expecting us to blow into a microphone while on the bus -- waving our arms around in public is just asking for trouble. In any case, are you excited for a more powerful DS, or are you still happy with the old one ... sorry, old four

Just get it released sometime soon Iwata. My six-year old DS recently broke and I can't go too long without grinding Pokemans.
Dang how many DS or and gameboys will there be?
In my opinion having "Highly Detailed graphics" is eliminating why the DS was so popular for developers.

The DS was so popular because it was cheap and easy to make games for it. But if you add in more horse power and detail people are going to expect that from it. So developers will not be able to get away with DS 1 looking games on the new hand held.

This will probably lead to less support. Look at the PSP. It's a great system with tons of great games. But if you compare the amount of games coming out on DS compared to PSP(more so when the two first came out) it really is night and day. The reason for that is because making a PSP game is pretty much the same as making a PS2 game as the capabilities are so close.
Ugh, more motion control? can't they figure out to put dual widescreen touchscreens? analog sticks? games that actually use the camera?
There goes my hope of a new Game Boy. Oh well guess I'll just have to wait a little longer until everyone gets tired of waggle and touch-screen.
This is why I quit the vidya
Y'know, I was sure Nintendo suggested, when they were marketing the DSi, that there would be DSi exclusive games that would benefit from it's beefed up specs and whatnot. It's the first console I've ever bought at launch, and I feel a bit chinned that they're effectively touting a new console already. And is anyone still excited by motion control?
Another issue is backwards compatibility. Nintendo used to be so good about that. I didn't get a DSi because it can't play Game Boy Advance games. I was sad that the Game Boy slot on the DS and DS Light couldn't play original GB games (same number of connection pins as GBA, right?) GBA could play GB Color and GB games (and remember Game Boy Pocket? "Play it Loud" Game Boys?). . . I still have a bunch of my original Game Boy games, and they work perfectly. Man, my Tetris is what, 21 years old this year?

So hopefully, whatever's next can at least still play old DS games. And yeah, I have yet to see games that only work for DSi, so there's no reason to get one. Everything else under the sun already has cameras in it, and I don't care about that feature. And the DS and DS Light can already connect to the Net to download stuff, although not entire games.

Say Hello to the Xbox One

No, not the first Xbox, or the Xbox 360. The third of Microsoft's consoles has opted to dial down its numbering by three hundred fifty-nine while dialing up its hardware. And it's called the "Xbox One", which means that...

Woah: Wii U gets MegaTen x Fire Emblem, Xeno- game, more

Oh, boy. Time for me to start seriously considering a Wii U. It seems Nintendo have carpet-bombed the gaming public with a new slate of announcements, enough to send our own Dale North into a tizzy.  First and strangest ...
