Dumbass facebook comments get politician in trouble photo

Look, Japan ain't perfect. Far from it. In fact, at Japanator we have entire tags and news sections devoted to bringing readers the kind of content that makes them facepalm, as if to ask "why, Japan why?!"

There is still a line of propriety, though, and a certain New Hampshire politician's facebook status update certainly skirted it.

Representative Nick Levasseur went and noted the following on Facebook:

"Anime is a prime example of why two nukes just wasn't enough"

If you've ever been on 4chan or in the typical comment thread you may well have read worse, but the resulting internet furor (that forced Levasseur to apologize) proves that you can't always get away with posting dumbass comments in social media.

It begs the question, though: how would more nukes change anime to Mr. Levasseur's liking?

[Thanks to everyone who sent in the tip!]

MOAR weird news:

Legacy Comments

This article just reminds me that this site needs more Touhou
I found an update to this story with Levasseur's apology (the link is here: http://www.geekosystem.com/nick-levasseur-anime-nuke-joke/).

"I would like to deeply apologize for the insensitivity of this post. It was a poorly thought out comment, posted jest on my private facebook page. It was never intended to be viewed by anyone other than friends. This, of course, does not excuse the comment. This type of statement has no place in public or private discourse. It does not represent any true opinion, political or personal. My record in the New Hampshire House shows a commitment to equality and social justice. It is a record of which I am most proud. This comment is a disappointment not only to the people of New Hampshire, whom it has been my privilege to serve, but also to my own beliefs and moral code."

While I'm glad he actually admitted he screwed up (as opposed to many apologies by public figures who say they're sorry for offending people), that's still a goddamn moronic thing to post. If that statement really is a disappointment to his "own beliefs and moral code," he should--at the very least--do something that helps or honors the Japanese-Americans he just insulted.

Or resign. Normally I'm a fan of second chances and try to imagine myself in the other person's shoes, but I honestly can't conceive of being so dumb and insensitive that I'd type a sentence like that out and actually go through with publishing it.

Unless I was writing a story and trying to quickly establish a character as being a dick.
"It begs the question, though: how would more nukes change anime to Mr. Levasseur's liking?"

+Nukes + Delay no penis in porn law = +More penis -less tentacles in Hentai.

Simple math really.
I'm pleasantly surprised that he had the decency to do a proper apology, as opposed to "I'm sorry YOU were offended", or some bullshit like that. Obviously it's moronic for a public figure to make a statement like that, but for me that falls into the category of too absurd to be that offensive. Like, did anyone REALLY think he wished more bombs had been dropped on Japan? The way some people have reacted, you would think they took him seriously.
Ugh why hate my animes??
I'm sure if he said something stupid like that about the Jews in WWII he would have been assassinated by now. I don't see how an apology just makes the whole issue disappear.
Whether serious or not, the suggestion that we should have dropped more nukes is in incredibly poor taste. Some things just shouldn't be joked about.
Maybe he watched all of Railgun?
Bah, he just needs to watch some good anime. It's a joke, but it's a bad one. He's saying that Japan should have been wiped off the earth, but not SAYING that Japan should have been wiped off the earth. But either way, he just categorically hates anime because he hasn't seen any. Douche.

King douche of the universe of course goes to Blagojevich, though. That guy is just scum. Like a cartoon villain.

Digg it up, get this topic more attention!
This guy belongs with the rest of the douche bags who are in 4chan!
did anyone mention that he seems to hate japanese people? if he says anime is worse than 'dog shit' than it maybe he just hates anime but obviously he desires to nuke japan. well hatred is common in the world but just want to point that out.
@Kougeru:
You are now thinking of Utsuho (aka Nuke-tan!).
Psh, an apology isn't going to change the fact that he made a highly insulting remark. If he had said something like "AIDS is a prime example of why Africa shouldn't exist" or "One Holocaust wasn't enough", you can bet your ass this would have been a lot more controversial.

Then again, I never did understand why insulting Asians and Latinos was slightly more acceptable than insulting Africans or Jews.
Hi, welcome to the Internet of 12 years ago!
I don't buy the obligatory apology. He knew what he was posting and didn't think twice about it and that's how he really feels.
Reminds me of the book i'm reading Submarine Commander (ISBN 0-671-68466-3) Back in WWII submarines were new and the tech was new and torpedo's failed a lot. The naval torpedo station in Newport denied that any failures were on their part and it was poor shooting by the sub operators. That is not the case. so the nukes part "I was only one of many frustrated submariners who thought it a violation of the New Mexico scenery to test the A-bomb at Alamagordo when the naval torpedo station was available." pg 54 This post just reminded me of a better place to have nuked.

And in my opinion Anime is much better animation style than anything that has been created in America. Don't bash the Anime if there is anything to bash it would be human stupidity all together.
"[Human stupidity] is a prime example of why [insert arbitrary number here] nukes just wasn't enough"
Wouldn't it be funny if South Park picked this story up? Probably won't happen. But I can wish for a slow news week, can't I? I loves me some Chinpokomon and "Let's Fighting Love" ninjas.
How stupid can this guy be? Have some common sense dude.
Did anyone see the guy? He looks like a total nerd. He's probably a 4chan troll.
Yeah, when you become a politician in the public eye: Your days of saying stuff like this are numbered.
@bahamut
I agree
What a tool
Jesus, I'm way too desensitized because I laughed.

That guy is still a dick though
I lol'ed at all the comments subtly mentioning Simmons' "apology" and yeah at least he's got the balls to admit he was in the wrong, so not everything is hopeless for this person.
I will admit that I laughed when I read that comment, but in the same breath I called him a MotherF, This guy is a real douche bag even if he apologized.
One reason I like Twitter is that the comments are positive, which is a benefit everyone you know potentially seeing what you're writing: you will just be less of a douche. One of the few exceptions I see are occasional people venting about how much they hate anime. To these people, and this politician guy I say, um, bite me? If you aren't creative enough to invent/discover an awesome alternate culture like this, at least don't hate on ours.
I swear to God he has to lurk the chans or else he wouldn't have worded it the exact same way they do. Idea of a politician coming from that site is to say the least, disturbing...
He must of watched the Endless Eight.
More nukes = no Japan = no animes = no bad animes.

To me, he just hate Japan. He is lucky that you can actually hate Japan and be safe about it, but there are some minorities that would kill the guy for that. Or at least sue him.
I think once you start saying "some things just shouldn't be joked about", you can get into a pretty dangerous place. Because most joke's are at someone's expense, once you start saying that some jokes are off-limits, how do you determine which ones? People will then say "why is it not okay to make fun of them in this way, but it's not that 'offensive' to make fun of me?"

IMO, the deterrent to making jokes like that shouldn't be that certain subjects are taboo, it should be that it's nigh-impossible to make them actually funny.
@karen: it's the difference between targeting action/culture/government of a people vs targeting the people themselves. he said the latter as in he wish that the japanese get nuked/destroyed/dead etc.
@OtakuMon: That's not what he said.
sigh, not word by word of course. so you agree japanese deserves more nukes? i mean he claimed that anime is just a prime example. so according to him, there are other reasons and each deems the japanese as deserving more nukes. to me that sounds like he wants to nuke/destroy the japanese.
He used the "I guess #____ just wasn't enough" meme, which is usually used when either grossly exaggerating or being facetious. Like if I say "I guess ten thousand Miku dolls just wasn't enough", I'm really not saying that I think there should be more Miku dolls. The fact that it was tasteless and dumb doesn't change the fact that it wasn't literal.
There are far more things that Japan has that one could dislike, but to say that two nukes weren't enough is egregious. How about just one nuke: on him, where the sun don't shine. Ignorance on the level of this simple state politician (emphasis on simple) serves to tick me off.

Obviously, he haet Japan and thank goodness he doesn't work for the State Department. Things could've turned out even nastier than this.
1. when a non-black person utter the N word the whole america goes nuts. but does that have to do with the literal meaning of the N word? as long as the statement has offensive tone to a certain race, that's all that matters.
2. people take things literally whether it's a joke or not. you can complain all you want but sense of humor is not protected by law.
3. the guy fucking apologizes. so even he knows what he says was offensive.
@OtakuMon: It is offensive, just not as offensive as it would be if he said "I hate Japanese people and I want them to die." I don't think we should have one all-purpose panic button for "Offensive!", there's more than one level- hence "very offensive", or "kind of offensive."

The reason why I make a point of this distinction is because I don't like that panic-button mentality, that's all. It's more complicated than one-size-fits-all hysteria.
so what level of offensive is the N word that makes the whole america goes nuts when non-black person say it? what makes saying a race deserves more nukes less offensive than that?
if it sounds offensive, it means trouble. simple as that.
I'll answer this ranting (I'm black after all, and I'm non-P.C. compliant).
@OtakuMon: the level at which the N word is offensive is unfairly double-edged. I could use it and there wouldn't be much of a problem (except around family and others around me who know better). The thing is in which context are they saying it. I use it in its original form: an unintelligent mofo; not racial slur that's been so diluted it's lost it bite. However, wishing ppl would die on such a scale over just one aspect of their culture quite overshadows the type of over-hyped outrage that using the N word can muster.

Now let's get this discussion back on the right track.
