For all of you who may have been watching the Sony E3 Keynote speech, you might’ve noticed FUNimation’s name thrown in with Sony’s list of content providers for the PlayStation Network’s new video rental service. I went and checked it out this morning to see what was listed, and here are the titles:

  • Afro Samurai
  • Astro Boy (Sony Pictures)
  • Basilisk
  • Burst Angel
  • Desert Punk
  • Gunslinger Girl
  • Kiddy Grade
  • Moon Phase
  • Samurai 7
  • Trinity Blood
  • Xam’d: Lost Memories
  • Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles

All the shows are available for $1.99 download-to-own, except for Xam’d, which is a rental only, and charges $2.99 for an SD release or $3.99 for an HD release. Wait, Xam’d? As in that new Bones project that never got a release date in Japan?

After poking my head into the Japanese PSN, I could see that they didn’t have anything in the ways of video content for the service. Back to the show description for a moment: “An original animation from Bones…will begin its exclusive broadcast from the PlayStation Store.” Well, that’s a new one on me – Sony has shown that they’re really serious about this, and managed to coax Bones into giving them the series. No way to fansub it now, as the file is DRM’d – it’s available for 14 days on your HD, but can only be played within the first 24 hours of starting the file. Kinda whack, I know, but the service needs to be profitable.

Are you guys looking to download anything from the PSN store? I’ve already grabbed the first episode of Xam’d (SD, since I’m cheap) and Burst Angel, just to see if I like the series.
