Rock the charts: Japan's box office numbers 1/30 - 2/05
by Brad Rice, 02/08/2010
Rock the charts: Japan's box office numbers 1/30 - 2/05 photo

Once again, it's time to rock these charts and figure out what's hot in Japanese theatres. Avatar just got knocked out of the #1 slot here in the US, but in Japan it looks like it's holding strong, and will be for a long time to come. So, between now and then, expect it to be rocking the charts like mad.

1. Avatar. 6th week, pulling in $6.85 million.
2. Oceans. 2nd week, pulling in $3.48 million.
3. Younger Brother. 1st week, pulling $2.61 million.
4. Golden Slumber. 1st week, pulling in $2.17 million.
5. Samurai Sentai Shinkenger vs. Go-onger Ginmaku Bang!. 1st week, pulling in $1.66 million.
6. The Lovely Bones. 1st week, pulling in $1.52 million.
7. Paranormal Activity. 1st week, pulling in $1.14 million.
8. Sayonara Itsuka. 2nd week, pulling in $1.10 million.
9.
Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. 2nd week, pulling in $910k.
10. Surrogates. 2nd week, pulling in $799k.

Not much surprise in what's going on here, although I wonder if those Japanese films that debuted this week will show any of the staying power of the Hollywood films on the charts. We'll have to see. In the meantime, what have you been watching in theatres, readers?

New York Times' top ten manga for 2/08/10

New York Times' top ten manga for 2/08/10 photo

Well, would you look at that! The New York Times' list has finally changed around a few of the titles on their list. It's still conspicuous as to how long some of those items sat up there, but I'm glad to see that the fan-favorite Black Butler has taken to the top of the charts.

1. Black Butler Vol. 1
2.
Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle Vol. 25
3.
Fullmetal Alchemist Vol. 22
4.
Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Vol. 4
5.
Shugo Chara! Vol. 8
6.
Naruto Vol. 46
7.
Maximum Ride Vol. 2
8.
Maximum Ride Vol. 1
9.
One Piece Vol. 24
10. Vampire Knight Vol. 8

Well, now let's see how long Black Butler stays on the charts, or if Vampire Knight Vol. 1 will suddenly surge up and take its place. Man, these charts are a funny thing.

JapanaTen: Ten shows you that teach you how to be a man

JapanaTen: Ten shows you that teach you how to be a man photo

"Being a man" is not an easy thing to do. There's no real guide to how to be an upright citizen, how to honor and care for your one true love, or what to do when your back is up against the wall. We have to discover it for ourselves, both through experience and through the literature available to us. It teaches us to dream, to strive for greater heights, and to fight for what's important to us.

These stories are weaved into a number of titles that we watch. Some have a really strong message, while others use it casually. Either way, as long as the story makes an impression upon you, and gives you something you can take to heart, then it's done its job in adding to your narrative of what it takes to be a man. It doesn't matter if they pilot giant robots or simply play guitar, there's a lesson in there for you.

Today, as part of Man Day, we're highlighting ten shows that teach you something very important about what it takes to be a man in every sense of the word, using not only your fists, but your mind and spirit too. It's important to stay true to yourself once you've discovered it, and I hope watching these shows will help you on that path.

Down in the comments, we'd love to hear what shows touched you personally and have inspired you.

Celebrating 20 years of the Brave series
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
Celebrating 20 years of the Brave series photo

Yesterday struck the 20th anniversary of the Brave series, most notably dropping Gao Gai Gar onto the world. Coming from the folks at Takara, they were looking to create something new after their Transformers brand had started losing its steam. So why not another show that featured transforming vehicles?

From this thought Yuusha Exkaiser was born. From there, the series would take off with its target audience, 7 to 10-year-old boys, and create one of the great hallmarks of manliness, Gao Gai Gar. So, in an effort to celebrate this hallmark of an achievement, I'd like to direct your eyes to our friends at Tomopop.

Anthony DePasquale took a look at some of the toys and the shows from the Brave franchise, in what turns out to be a fabulous read. Go on over to our figure-tastic friend's house and play with their toys a bit. You'll have some fun.

Sakura-con to welcome Yasuhiro Imagawa
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
Sakura-con to welcome Yasuhiro Imagawa photo

Originally slated to go to Anime Weekend Atlanta last year, Yasuhiro Imagawa canceled his appearance (likely due to the swine flu hullabaloo), leaving fans in the lurch. This manly man, director of G Gundam, Giant Robo and Shin Mazinger Shogeki! Z-Hen, will be making his appearance at Sakura-Con 2010.

Yes, the man behind Master Asia is going to be in Seattle, Washington from April 2nd to the 4th. Meanwhile, I'm on the other side of the country.

...

Why do these things have to happen to me? If any of you happen to be rich members of society and don't mind sending me across the US to meet one of the greatest men in history, please get in touch with me. After all, this is a man who gave us a show with such burning blood, such abject racism, that you just want to pilot a giant mecha and save the world. How can you deny me my wish to meet this great man?

Welcome to Man Day!
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
Welcome to Man Day! photo

There's a certain magic to men. Sure, they're brash and bone-headed, charging into situations that they have no hope of winning, almost guaranteeing to get themselves killed. But somehow, through sheer force of will or just dumb luck, they manage to succeed not only in winning the day, but our hearts as well.

Today is a celebration of all things men. Manly spirit, pretty boys' asses, and more GAR than you can shake a stick at. You better grit those teeth, because what we have lined up for you today is going to punch you in the jaw so hard, it will smash through time and space.

To kick things off, we need a theme song for today. An anthem of manliness that will get your blood boiling and remind you that you can conquer the earth if you so choose. Follow me after the jump to see just what that song is.

The Otaku Express joins anime and rap in musical rhapsody
by Brad Rice, 02/04/2010
The Otaku Express joins anime and rap in musical rhapsody photo

Scott Green sent out this video to the twitterverse last night, and I couldn't help but watch. After all, how often do we get to see works that combine hip hop and anime? Well, besides AMVs.

And you know what? I enjoyed it, for the effort that it was. Chalk it up to my relative inexperience in the world of hip hop and rap, or just my poor taste in music, but there was a genuine effort here that I could connect with. I had some troubles with the pacing and mixing in Japanese, but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Yahya, the artist behind the song, currently has two tracks up for his The Otaku Express single: "The Third Child" and "Genki Dama." Interestingly enough, Yahya doesn't have a website or anything like that, so all we have to go on are his two singles.

Oh, and this has nothing to do with the fact that my business card makes a mysterious appearance around 1:10 into the video. Check out the two songs after the jump.

Otakon's first guest: The Yoshida Brothers
by Brad Rice, 02/04/2010
Otakon's first guest: The Yoshida Brothers photo

Sorry to disappoint you guys, Luca isn't coming. At least not yet.

The first guest that Otakon announced for their 2010 lineup is going to be the traditional music group The Yoshida Brothers. Brothers from the nether regions of Hokkaido, the two boys made their debut in 1999 with their shamisen, selling over 100k copies of their album, an unprecedented size for a traditional music CD.

According to the Otakon staff, The Yoshida Brothers' appearance "supports our broader educational mission" of Japanese music and culture, and strengthens Otakon's stance as a very music-heavy convention. So you can guess what'll be coming later on: many more musical guests.

Which I don't mind too much, but I have the hardest time in the world interviewing them. This one doesn't look like it'll be any easier. The one question I want to ask, "what do you think is the main reason for your success," already has a clear answer. Just look at the header image: they're banging. Just like Luca.

No Valentine's Day plans? Why not play a dating sim?
by Brad Rice, 02/03/2010
No Valentine's Day plans? Why not play a dating sim? photo

It can be a hard and lonely life for an otaku. The massive buildup and subsequent celebration doesn't make things much more fun, either. Yet, for some reason, you find yourself sitting in a room all by yourself watching your favorite romantic comedy, crying along with Taiga in those heart-wrenching moments of Toradora, or cheering on Emi as she tries to confront her feelings for Haruma in School Rumble.

Well, there's always another way to spend your time on the most ronery of holidays: Our friends at J-List are offering a sale on their dating sim titles. If you buy Bazooka Cafe, they'll give you $5 in store credit, plus an additional $5 for each title you buy with Bazooka Cafe. If you grab 4 in total, you get 15% off the purchase in addition to the $20 credit.

Not too bad of a deal, now is it?

So why not head on over to J-List and pick yourself up a few dating sims so that you can *ahem* enjoy the day in your own special way.
