Anime Weekend Atlanta - day three
by Matthew Whitehead, 09/21/2009
Anime Weekend Atlanta - day three photo

And I'm finally back home with a report on the last day of Anime Weekend Atlanta (a day late since I went to bed quickly after getting home Sunday). Things quieted down a bit as otaku went on their ways back home in a downpour, but there was still stuff left for me to do.

The first (and only) panel of the day I went to was "Yes, YOU can go to Japan, yes, YOU!" — very relevant for me since I've never been to Japan (even though I was a Japanese major...). Some good tips for things you need to do before you go and things to do once you get there were given, and a quick introduction to some of the major neighborhoods of Tokyo, like Akihabara and Shinjuku, was given. I'll keep the tips in mind once I do have enough money to take a trip over there.

Anime Weekend Atlanta - day two
by Matthew Whitehead, 09/19/2009

It's been another busy and rainy day at Anime Weekend Atlanta, but it was anything but dreary inside the Cobb Galleria as Saturdays usually bring the highest attendance of the con.

The day started off with a Funimation industry panel and previews of some of their upcoming releases, but nothing new to report, however. I did pick up the first Sgt. Frog boxset (officially out next week) from their booth in the dealers' room and I highly recommend it to everybody out there since it's hilarious stuff. I didn't watch Spice and Wolf and Bamboo Blade, so I'll probably be picking those up when they're released in November.

Anime Weekend Atlanta - day one
by Matthew Whitehead, 09/18/2009
Anime Weekend Atlanta - day one photo

Good evening from Anime Weekend Atlanta! It's been a fun (and somewhat tiring) first day here so I'm back in the hotel room a bit early to hopefully get more than a few hours of sleep tonight.

The bigger and better Artists' Alley

The day started off with a quick trip through the new Artists' Alley, expanded to an exhibit hall since we don't have to share space with a baby show or wood furniture show this year. I'll be visiting again tomorrow as more artists arrive.

Hi from Anime Weekend Atlanta
by Matthew Whitehead, 09/17/2009
Hi from Anime Weekend Atlanta photo

Hello from down here in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm here with my harem of catgirls (...I wish) at the Renaissance Waverly hotel and Cobb Galleria for Anime Weekend Atlanta 2009 (with my trusty Eee PC 1000H not using the $14.95 a day hotel wireless that should be free).

Events don't start until tomorrow, but there was a "Super Happy Fun Sell" where individuals could sell used anime goods and such (check some pics in the gallery). On my schedule for tomorrow is a few panels (like "Clamp at 20") and a walk through the dealers' room, along with much picture taking of cosplayers (which will probably be most of what I post), so be sure to come back!

Sakura Tange returns to anime in Animal Detectives Kirumins
by Matthew Whitehead, 09/01/2009
Sakura Tange returns to anime in Animal Detectives Kirumins photo

The seiyuu most responsible for making me into an otaku is coming back to anime this fall. Sakura Tange, best known as Sakura-chan of Cardcaptor Sakura (I have all the Japanese manga, all R1 DVDs, and more than a few figures), had stopped seiyuu work in 2000, but now will return in Animal Detectives Kirumins as Kanon Hatori (the blond on the lower right).

I was already looking forward to Kirumins because of the cute character design and concept, but now I can't wait to watch it. The show starts Monday October 5th at 5:30PM on TV Tokyo and is being produced by Satelight, HAL Film Maker (I thought they merged with Yumeta Company to form TYO Animations), and JM Animation. Sakura Tange fans can also hear her in the DS 24-hour girlfriend simulator Love Plus, on sale this Thursday.

Jason carves a wooden Mio with a chainsaw
by Matthew Whitehead, 08/26/2009

Famous slasher Jason from Friday the 13th has apparently traded in his machete for a chainsaw to produce wood carvings (nicknamed "Mokkoroids") of our favorite anime and game characters. Jason-san's most recent work is a life-sized carving of Mio from K-ON! — impressive work as always. If he put her up for auction he'd probably get a lot.

Some of the other carvings Jason-san has made include Nagi-sama (the Kannagi Nagi), Idolmaster characters, and Horo. Check out some more videos with big chainsaw service by Jason-san below.

Toro Station takes a shot at Endless Eight
by Matthew Whitehead, 08/24/2009
Toro Station takes a shot at Endless Eight photo

Every now and then (and sometimes more often), some anime or manga reference is made in Mainichi Issho's daily news program, Toro Station, most often by the black cat, Kuro, a self-proclaimed otaku and Nico Nico Douga premium member. In today's episode, Kuro managed to slip in an Endless Eight reference and suggested that they rebroadcast Toro Station... and was promptly smacked three times by the white cat, Toro. He deserved it, and maybe a wash basin dropped on his head, too.

The rest of the episode had a guest from the largest online audiobook retailer in Japan, FeBe, explaining how to train your ears to make studying easier. Among his suggestions was listening to audiobooks at 2 or 3 times normal speed or having a conversation with a famous person or actor you like in your head. Of course, Kuro, as a seiyuu otaku, has absolutely no problem at all imagining having a conversation with Rie Kugimiya ("Kugyuhho!"), Chiwa Saito ("Chiwahho!"), and Yukari Tamura ("Yukarin! Yukarin!"). I'm not quite at Kuro's level, but when I read manga I do hear a particular seiyuu for certain characters... and then when an anime is announced it's not the person I had in mind.

Third season of Hidamari Sketch announced!
by Matthew Whitehead, 08/22/2009
Third season of Hidamari Sketch announced! photo

As you can tell by looking at my profile icon, I'm a huge fan of Ume's Aoki 4-koma manga Hidamari Sketch. So when I read the news today about a third season of the anime, Hidamari Sketch x 3 Stars, being announced at the TBS Anime Festa, I said "kitaaaaaaaa!" out loud. No dates were given for when it will start, but since a Hidamari Sketch special is being aired on BS-TBS in October, it shouldn't be too far before we get to see Yunocchi (Yes, Asumisu!) and the gang again.

Shaft's been keeping a pretty busy schedule lately, though, with Zetsubou-sensei and Bakemonogatari on now, then the second part of Natsu no Arashi! in the fall, then Dance with the Vampire Bund coming up in the winter. So long as we don't get any more "Fuji-san" incidents I'll be very happy. The manga is being published here by Yen Press as Sunshine Sketch, so I'd highly recommend checking it out. Now why hasn't somebody licensed the anime yet?

Aya Hirano didn't like Endless Eight either
by Matthew Whitehead, 08/19/2009
Aya Hirano didn't like Endless Eight either photo

Watching the never-ending Endless Eight was hard for us, and it was hard for the voice of Haruhi, Aya Hirano, as well. She said she was really surprised when she found out that she would basically be doing the same act 8 times over, with the same script used with only very small changes for the 2nd through 7th episodes of Endless Eight (that's probably the reason I skipped through most of those episodes).

Hirano had to keep her performance as Haruhi the same through each of those episodes, while Tomokazu Sugita had to think up ad-libs for Kyon (which were very nicely done) and also keep in mind the differences in direction in each episode, such as the distance between him and Koizumi in the same scene changing episode to episode.

Hirano's glad it's all over, and is thankful that Haruhi fans stuck with Endless Eight, saying it was probably harder to watch than to do it. She said that if she were asked to do any more Endless Eight episodes she'd say no, and we'd say no, too. But, with the announcement of Endless Eight events at Anime Newtype Online, Kadokawa and KyoAni don't seem to be making any effort to listen to Haruhi fans. Will they ever admit that Yamakan was right and they royally screwed this one up?

Untan! Untan! with K-ON! castanets
by Matthew Whitehead, 08/19/2009
Untan! Untan! with K-ON! castanets photo

And the K-ON! merchandising continues, starting with K-ON! castanets so you can untan yourself crazy for only 840 yen. To compliment the castanets are a tamborine and Ritsu drumsticks for 1,260 yen each. Finishing up are Mio and Azu-nyan ita-guitar cases for a much more expensive 15,750 yen. Photos of the goods are in the post gallery below.

All of the above items should be available in October to the throngs of K-ON! fans who will surely buy them all. No K-ON! stuff for me yet (Blu-rays are too expensive!), though I would definitely like to get the Nendoroids (especially an Azu-nyan one) when I'm not quite so poor.

And just because, 10 minutes of Yui untan after the break.
