Onicon 2009 - Day 2 Cosplay: Evil Nurses Edition
by Edward Baylon, 11/02/2009
Onicon 2009 - Day 2 Cosplay: Evil Nurses Edition photo

Another day, another gallery of cosplay for you to feast your eyes on! From Houston, Texas, where you'd expect people to ride horses more than actually participate in cosplay, is the annual Onicon anime convention.

The second day of a con will always be somewhat better in many ways and at Onicon, the cosplay got better. The insane amount of people who attended proved hard to take more pics since space was limited but we're here to give you a glimpse of what you might have missed.

If you've missed the our previous post of the first day's cosplay, click on here for some Jill Sandwich action.

Also, Pedobear. Damn, this con is fun.

Onicon 2009 - Day 1 Cosplay: Jill Sandwich Edition
by Edward Baylon, 10/31/2009
Onicon 2009 - Day 1 Cosplay: Jill Sandwich Edition photo

Yesterday, Onicon 2009 kicked off this Halloween weekend down here in Houston, Texas. The annual convention was held at the Houston Marriot Westchase on Westheimer, a very different scene from the previous years when the convetion was held in downtown Houston at the George R. Brown Center.

I gotta say that a lot cosplay here from the first day really impressed me much like the previous years at Onicon, from creative and fun cosplay to the detailed cosplay, there's sure to be something here for everyone.

Check out the gallery for a taste of this year's Onicon cosplay!

Japanator's Guide for the penny pinching cosplayer
by Edward Baylon, 10/26/2009
Japanator's Guide for the penny pinching cosplayer photo

Holy carp! Halloween is this weekend and you've found yourself not ready for that only time of the year when wearing a Naruto headband is not considered to be a heinous crime against humanity. But what's this? You don't have enough cash to pay some website to send you a pre-made costume made by some factory kid half your age from China?

Well, Japanator is here to help! No, not by sending you a check so you won't look like some idiot  in a  cheap costume but we're here to make you look less like one. If you're the kind of person who's handy with your hands (no pun intended) and like to put things together.

This guide is intended to help you cosplay makers, both beginners and even experts, in making a better cosplay with limited resources. Do you have any tips of your own?

Releases of the week - 08/17/09

Releases of the week - 08/17/09 photo

This week's dose of of manga and DVD releases is on the sparse side of things with only a handful of stuff you'll probably care about. Starting off with the stuff you'll probably care about is the box set of the series sequel to the loli assassin anime Gunslinger Girl -Il Teatrino-. For those anime fans out there who love remakes of classic anime, you've got the five volumes of the 2003 remake of Astro Boy.

We've got a couple of first volume manga releases with one of them from Fumi Yoshinaga, the award winning author of Antique Bakery, is Ooku, a manga about not having enough men to go around in Edo period Japan. So what do they do? They gather all the pretty men and send them to serve in the Shogun's Inner Chamber. The other first volume manga this week is a martial arts manga called The Battle of Genryu, which is about another teenage boy who finds out he has super martial arts abilities but also learns that he has these powers only for a day once a month.

Hit the jump for this week's meager release list!

This week's releases feature pretty vampire boys, stray dogs, and a socially-inept teenage mercenary. First up, this week is the first volume of the gritty action manga Dogs by Shirow Miwa. For you pre-pubscent females out there who still can't enough of pretty vampire boys, you're gonna love Bloody Kiss.

For you anime collectors out there who missed out before on Full Metal Panic: The Second Raid on DVD, are in luck with the newly remastered collection out this week. Now you can watch hot anime twin sisters taking a shower together in glorious HD resolution.

Hit the jump for this week's releases!

You lovers of the random and super deformed moe are in a treat this week, with the release of the Lucky Star OVA which is sure to excite collectors who've been waiting to finish their collection.

For you perverts out there, we have a hentai title for you called Crimson Climax: Island of Sin and you also have the premium collection of Fullmetal Alchemist for you yaoi paddle-lovers at cons.

Shojo fans should love Black Bird as it involves high school romance with demons and lots of licking and eating involved.

This week, we get quite the treat as we get a re-release of Ichi the killer - Special Edition, not quite as cool as the blood pack we got back in the day but this one features over 2 hours of extra footage. The complete collection of CLAMP goodness that is xxxHolic comes out for you lovers out there of long legs and necks.

On the manga front, we get only one first volume release in the form of Ninja Girls, while other releases are the latest volumes of titles such as Dark Edge and Fairy Tail.

Oh, and Dragonball Evolution comes out this week. Ugh.

Hit the jump for the rest of this week's releases!!

Another week of releases comes our way with subbed collections (just the way SOME of us like it) with titles such as teh very yuri Strawberry Panic! and the very wacky Hayate the combat butler. More box sets such as Suzuka come out and a bunch of others.

Avid manga readers should be delighted to find out that new volumes of REAL, Pluto and Black Jack come out this week.

Hit the jump for the rest of this week's releases!

Weekend Japanatainment: Summer 2009 Anime OP edition!
by Edward Baylon, 07/18/2009

Video 1 - (ABOVE) Bakemongatari Episode 1 OP - SHAFT, the people that brought you the Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei anime, which shares the same art style.

Video 2 - Bakemonogatari Episode 2 OP - Seems SHAFT has lots of time and money on their hands that they can give another opening for the second episode. A bit disappointing since it looks like it has nothing to do with the anime if you didn't pay attention.

Video 3 - Canaan OP - Honestly, I had zero interest with this show with those short previews but when I saw this opening, I instantly put it on my queue for this on my season's to-watch list.

Video 4 - Spice and Wolf 2 OP - The sequel to Japanator's much-loved Spice & Wolf anime is here and it looks hot.

Video 5 - Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 OP - Much like the show it's replacing on Fuji TV's Noitamina time slot this season, Eden of the East, this is another anime that deals with decimating Tokyo, but this time it's because of a natural disaster. I hope this show has HYPNO-PENIS in some form or fashion.

Video 6 - Aoi Hana OP - JC Staff, my favorite studio, gives us another very beautifully-made anime that has some yuri romance. Easily one of my picks from this season.

Video 7 - Umineko no Naku koro ni - A murder mystery set in a private island mansion set in the late 1980's. Love the orchestral choir music.

Video 6 - Zan Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei - The third season OP of Sayonara Zetsobo Sensei is a bit of a disappointment since it's quite obvious that they're busy with Bakemonogatari.

Bonus Video - Here's something REALLY LATE for you AMERICANS out there who wanted something for last last week's 4th of July celebration ...IN AMERICA!!!

Hit the jump for the rest of the videos!!!
