Confessions 17: Simon
by Anti-Spiral, 02/05/2010
Confessions 17: Simon photo

Hello.

We hope that We are not intruding upon your Day of Men, but We thought the moment opportune to engage in what you Spirals call a "confess-ion."

We hereby submit Our confess-ion to one Spiral in particular, the one who leads the Great Gurren Brigade.

No, not that one, the one with star-shaped shade-glasses. Yes, him.

We, the Anti-Spiral, express great fondness for the Spiral known as Simon.

Man Day: Why I am better for Kamina than Yoko
by Colette Bennett, 02/05/2010
Man Day: Why I am better for Kamina than Yoko photo

Ah, Kamina. There is nothing more GAR than an image of your face. I know that the flame that burns twice as bright usually only burns half as long, as that old adage certainly applies to you. Usually, I find myself drawn to the more feminine men of the anime universe, but just this one time, I found myself longing to be ravaged by your blatant manliness.

Of course, since you were already out of the picture by the time Yoko moved on to someone else, you have no way of knowing what her true intentions were on that day when she stood on the cliff with you and said all those sweet things. If only you could have known that I existed ... you could have found real love (not to mention brain blowing sex) before you went on into the great beyond.

I don't need to make a case to convince you that I was the woman for you and not Yoko. In fact, I can sum it up in one point. If you want to hit the jump, I'll make it short and sweet. See if you aren't convinced.

JapanaTen: Ten shows you that teach you how to be a man
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
JapanaTen: Ten shows you that teach you how to be a man photo

"Being a man" is not an easy thing to do. There's no real guide to how to be an upright citizen, how to honor and care for your one true love, or what to do when your back is up against the wall. We have to discover it for ourselves, both through experience and through the literature available to us. It teaches us to dream, to strive for greater heights, and to fight for what's important to us.

These stories are weaved into a number of titles that we watch. Some have a really strong message, while others use it casually. Either way, as long as the story makes an impression upon you, and gives you something you can take to heart, then it's done its job in adding to your narrative of what it takes to be a man. It doesn't matter if they pilot giant robots or simply play guitar, there's a lesson in there for you.

Today, as part of Man Day, we're highlighting ten shows that teach you something very important about what it takes to be a man in every sense of the word, using not only your fists, but your mind and spirit too. It's important to stay true to yourself once you've discovered it, and I hope watching these shows will help you on that path.

Down in the comments, we'd love to hear what shows touched you personally and have inspired you.

GRIT THOSE TEETH!
by Simon, 02/05/2010
GRIT THOSE TEETH! photo

What's that? You think we're done for? Of course; there's no point to trying any more and we may as well just give in and take our deaths without any real struggle. What kind of man are you?

We've fought for how many years now? Through blood and tears we've come this far, taking down obstacles people said we'd never be able to beat. Now, after all that, you want to give up? We've still got so much left to accomplish. Just because you've had one or two bad days doesn't mean that everything's over. Learn to man up!

Sure, things seem bleak. But that's no reason to give up. You'll hit the ground time and time again, but all you need to do is keep getting up and you'll eventually win. I don't know about you, but I could never live with myself sitting around asking "what if" or blaming other people for why certain things didn't happen.

So you know what? Change all of that. Get your ass in gear, and save the goddamned world if you need to. I'd like to know what's stopping you from doing it. C'mon, give me a reason.

Hah, that's it? I'll tell you what you can do to fix that.

Grit those teeth!

Celebrating 20 years of the Brave series
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
Celebrating 20 years of the Brave series photo

Yesterday struck the 20th anniversary of the Brave series, most notably dropping Gao Gai Gar onto the world. Coming from the folks at Takara, they were looking to create something new after their Transformers brand had started losing its steam. So why not another show that featured transforming vehicles?

From this thought Yuusha Exkaiser was born. From there, the series would take off with its target audience, 7 to 10-year-old boys, and create one of the great hallmarks of manliness, Gao Gai Gar. So, in an effort to celebrate this hallmark of an achievement, I'd like to direct your eyes to our friends at Tomopop.

Anthony DePasquale took a look at some of the toys and the shows from the Brave franchise, in what turns out to be a fabulous read. Go on over to our figure-tastic friend's house and play with their toys a bit. You'll have some fun.

Welcome to Man Day!
by Brad Rice, 02/05/2010
Welcome to Man Day! photo

There's a certain magic to men. Sure, they're brash and bone-headed, charging into situations that they have no hope of winning, almost guaranteeing to get themselves killed. But somehow, through sheer force of will or just dumb luck, they manage to succeed not only in winning the day, but our hearts as well.

Today is a celebration of all things men. Manly spirit, pretty boys' asses, and more GAR than you can shake a stick at. You better grit those teeth, because what we have lined up for you today is going to punch you in the jaw so hard, it will smash through time and space.

To kick things off, we need a theme song for today. An anthem of manliness that will get your blood boiling and remind you that you can conquer the earth if you so choose. Follow me after the jump to see just what that song is.

More Fist of the North Star Musou screens!
by Tim Sheehy, 12/26/2009
More Fist of the North Star Musou screens! photo

For those of you, who like me, are eagerly awaiting Koei Tecmo's upcoming Fist of the North Star Musou title, you're in luck. Our buddies over at Dtoid have posted some new screens from the upcoming game via Famitsu. While I have to admit that I was never the biggest fan of Fist of the North Star, the game looks rather stunning. What little gameplay footage I've seen so far is incredibly fun, violent, and most of all satisfying. It's like someone answered my prayers, and decided to make God Hand 2. I think this might also be a good time to point out that if Fallout 3 had looked remotely like Fist of the North Star, it would have been a million times better.

Now I know some of you can't wait to rip your enemies into little tiny pieces, so I have a suggestion that might help pass the time until the game hits Japanese shelves in March. You'll want to procure the game Black Belt for the Sega Master System. Sure, it doesn't say Fist of the North Star on the cover, but that's what it basically is--a side-scrolling 1-vs-everyone brawler that lets you punch and kick your opponents into itty-bitty pieces. What most people don't realize is that the game was originally Fist of the North Star in Japan. They had to strip the license when they brought the game overseas, so they changed the name and played with the art, but the gameplay was left completely intact. While I actually own my copy of the game (see the picture below), you can probably find a rom of it if you look hard enough. Maybe you'll even come across the original Japanese version. It's not like you'd need to read it any ways.

If, on the other hand, you want to disappoint yourself, you can try the sequel Last Battle for the Sega Genesis. Like Black Belt, the license was stripped from the game. The only thing left intact was the art and some of the gameplay, but it's only a mere shell. Nobody explodes into pieces, and the story doesn't even come across as remotely enjoyable. They even went as far as to change Kenshiro's name to Aarzak. Blasphemous, I know.

Anyways, if you want to check out an extended trailer for Fist of the North Star Musou, check the official website.

Simply put, I am in awe. Sadly, there are only 300 for sale, and it'll be $400. Still, feast your eyes upon this and bask in its glory.

If you're going to Comiket, pick one up for me, please?

Macross Day wouldn't be complete without a tribute to Roy
by Tim Sheehy, 11/20/2009
Macross Day wouldn't be complete without a tribute to Roy photo

Roy Focker is quite possibly the manliest man to grace anime to date. Not only does he womanize with the best of them, he's got the rugged good looks shared only by the likes of Captain Harlock, and Kamina himself. When he's not busy hitting on women or shooting things, he spends his time knocking back drinks like it's nobody's business. And while some of you may want to argue the merits of those qualities, one thing all of us can't deny was his propensity to always put bros before hoes.

Not to spoil the series, but the man takes a bullet in the back, and what does he do? Hospital? F**k that. He just plays guitar instead. If you ask me, that's one hell of a way to go out. Did I even mention that his last name is actually pronounced exactly as it's spelt? Come on, there's no questioning that the man's credentials. So, seeing as this should bring a end to our Macross Day posts, here's to you Roy Focker, the gar-ist man in the galaxy.

Hit the jump to watch a heartfelt tribute to the man himself.

Master Asia's hot-blooded men gallery
by Master Asia, 11/13/2009
Master Asia's hot-blooded men gallery photo

So it's Idol day, huh? Two can play at this game.

I don't believe in celebrating that which is cute or sexy. These things matter not to a warrior! Simply look forward to those who will challenge you, and the man that will one day put you in your grave. These are the most appealing things to a true warrior!

Now I, Master Asia: The Undefeated of the East and the man formerly known as the King of Hearts as well as the Champion of the previous Gundam Fight Match, shall bestow upon you images of those men who prove to be so manly.

If you think you can show me someone manlier, I'd like to see it.
