Way to go, Japan. I'm not one to support rape (I don't think anyone around here will come out and say they would, anyways), but I'm mad to see unnecessary censorship taking place here. According to Canned Dogs, Japan is putting a ban on rape games into effect, after the whole hubbub surrounding Rapelay.
There will be changes to the judging criteria starting June 2nd, which is going to force a large number of companies -- some 200 or so -- to change their product lineup. While it's a morally offensive genre, it's a fairly big one. If these companies don't just decide to shut down, they'll quickly flood the market in other genres, and I can see it ending very badly -- and that's just from a commercial standpoint.
The fact that Japan is, from what Canned Dogs is saying (and what I can understand from the Japanese article), putting stricter control on content is something that really shouldn't be. Freedom of speech is important, and I'm grateful every single day that we have it. It may mean that some awful stuff gets through, but by the same token, it protects some of our most important rights.
On a side note, if you're on Twitter, you should start following the Comic Book Legal Defense Force. They're here to keep our comics safe from unnecessary laws, and doing their best to keep us safe from unfair prosecution.
Problem solved! Not real rape.
