I'm inclined to call BS too. Rob always used to love spouting the factoid that 30% of Japan's economy (e.g. otaku-related stuff) is in 10% of the population's hands, e.g. 10% of Japan is hardcore otaku. 10% is not enough to be responsible for a nation-wide epidemic.

Avoiding girls for emotional reasons is a small part of the case for males, but I'd say it also includes the general Japanese / Victorian concept that sex is bad/ugly/gross/sinful. Both societies hate and love sex and have big industries related to it; they just can't deal with it on a personal level.

Plus, it also includes the girls themselves, whose current generation has some freedom for once, and is much more independent-minded. Japanese women finally have access to the pill, for instance, and a feminist movement is attempting to resist the female gender roles. Cheif among these: submission. A girl can say no and not go out with (or have sex with) some macho jerk just because he's a male. Plus, since Japanese women see marriage as a dead-end and a career-killer, they avoid it(rightfully so).

Plus, the pill would explain a decrease in the need for abortions and condoms. . . it'd be interesting to find stats on its sales.

There is absolutely NOTHING sinful in Japanese vision because Japanese DO NOT have our judaic-christian education. That's the main reason why Japanese girls are said "easy" : they just don't see sex as something "dirty" and are not reluctant to do it.
As for the pill, they usually don't take it because Japanese don't like to put medication in their body and alter their physiology, and there was a HUGE propaganda against the pill saying it causes cancer. The main reason is that abortion is a fine way for doctors to pay their wives' expenses (abortion in Japan is very expensive), so doctors don't want to stop practicing abortion and talk shit about the pill.

It should be said that Japan is THE country where people have the less sex after marriage (and even before). People are just not interested in sex with a real girl because the real girl they get is just "dead in bed" (or, as my American friend would say, having sex with a Japanese girl is just about "starfishing").
Most of Japanese girls are boring in bed and Japan is THE society where you can get everything as a subsitute for sex. Honestly, if you've ever been to Japan, you MUST have noticed how sex is everywhere but in the attitude of people : they just won't do the effort of getting some.

As for the 2D complex, I noticed that 2D girls tend to shut the fuck up when they are told to, don't whine, don't ask for expensive garbage, don't cheat on you, are always available. So ok, they're not hot and wet, but what most men want is "no annoyance" and 2D girls deliver it perfectly, whereas 3D girls tend to money the "no annoyance" time. With 3D girls you have to negotiate.
