As long as they can capture the insanely over the top manliness that is Gurren-Lagann, they cannot fail. SPIN ON!

This definitely has alot of potential. Assuming they use it, this could come to be a really good dub. I also agree that Weaver has me wondering, but then again, I can't think of anyone else that could be much more badass (at least he did Bondo from Elfen Lied and Nabeshin really well).

This actually looks really good. Chris Patton is a good fit for Rossiu, though I'm afraid he may make me actually like him. They avoided using Crispin Freeman and JYB, and Vic as Viral actually could work. He's got a similar pitch as Nobuyuki Hiyama.

I honestly believe we need another 5-6 years till we see good anime voice acting in english. By then we'll have a lot more experienced voice actors whose rolls don't only consist of cartoon characters for saturday morning cartoon shows.

All this hoopla for dubs, I think ADV and many companies are going to wrong way with this. All their doing is wasting the limited budget on extras (yes I consider dubs as being extra content) which aren't necessary.

Look if the anime industry wasn't sucking in sales, I would completely agree with them working toward more complicated localization projects (aka dubs). The money and time necessary to dub these shows is unbelieveable can only be sustain if their was good revenue coming in (which btw isn't happening).

How about these companies focus on the core group first and then branch out (i.e. do dubs to garner mainstream interest) using the money they generated by pleasing their core consumer.

As has been stated before, forgoing dub a dub, especially on a big property like this, absolutely kills sales.

This is a popular show which could very well become a hit. It needs a dub.

I can concede that this show has cartoon network/saturday morning cartoon show potential, which of course requires dub. So I can understand where you're coming from Seif.

My rant really falls down on lots of non-mainstream, not family-friendly anime that seem to get dubs, when its obvious that the show is marketed to those who really don't care if the voices are in japanese and have no problem reading subtitles.

I just want to add one more thing.

Aside from cable tv airing potential (which requires dubs), if the show isn't going be shown on American local or cable tv, explain me how the lack of dubs will hurt DVD sales.

This really boggles my mind. Is there really people out there that buy anime dvds who raises their arms in disgust when they see Japanese audio/Eng subs only on the case? Is there really market for english dubbed anime for DVD-only releases.

I understand popular tv marketable franchises doing dubs, but come on, is there really that much demand for dubs?

byrc: Believe it or not, yes, there is a huge amount of dub-only viewers out there, and having them been wained on product like DB and Pokemon, they come to expect these things to have dubbed content. This doesn't even account for those whom are more prone to dub viewing over subs based upon disability or ability.

I'll add that I'm in demand for dubs myself.

I mean seriously.... it's all voice. WHat's the big deal ? Yes, there is bad acting in some cases, but you cans witch the dubs, and I'm familiar with the cases where the English actors try their goddamn best to match the dubs.

Besides.... even though I watch Haruhi Suzumiya subbed, I listen to the English audio on my Ipod. It's like reading the light novel.

@DrkCntry: You just stated two popular (or use to be popular back in day) franchises. That's what they grow up with and thats what they want. They aren't the people buying dvd's of Suzumiya Haruhi, My-Hime, Mushishi, or many other series that will never see the light of day on a cable tv channel. Look its not that I hate dubs, it's that I see them as a weak point of US anime distribution industry and a drain on their revenue. Their mindless need to dub every series out there is ridiculous.

Again all I'm saying is that not all series need to be dubbed. Series that have the potential to be big mainstream hits like bleach, naruto, reborn, d.gray man, gundam, ghost in shell, hellsing, and many others should and have been dubbed.

Seriously my issue isn't about the dub quality its the need to dub every series out there when it's obvious there isn't mainstream support for it. People who define anime by what they see only on saturday morning cartoon blocks, and cartoon network aren't exactly the type of people who go ape shit when a new volume of Kannon comes out.

Who the heck demands english dub of Air and Kannon? I know for sure it ain't my 12 year old cousin who thinks the best anime ever made was Bleach (he finds japanese annoying). I'm not putting those people down, they like what they like, but they sure as hell aren't asking dubs of those kinds shows.

byrc: Yes, they grew up on it, keyword here being grow up...even I watched the original Pokemon and original DB on TV and as long as I've been watching anime, I just prefer dubs these days...considering they are leaps and bounds better than the dubs I grew up with back in the old days.

GL has probably just as much potential to be mainstream, considering it's content, as any of the anime on Adult Swim. And like I said, this doesn't account for the disabled folks out there with various disorders/ailments that prevent them from enjoying anime with subs (I know quite a few personally).

The dubbing is simply there because the market requires it, I've said it quite a few times wherever I post that while we may all be pretty vocal about the likes, wants, demands that we know of, we are still probably the smallest minority out there when it comes to overall market demand...and believe me, it's obvious that the market still requires dubs to sell the product, especially when there are various factors to deal with.

Also, as a counter, I have recently introduced several people within a group of friends to anime that had fledgling interest because of what they saw on Adult Swim/Starz/Sci-Fi/wherever and they all worried when I told them about some sub-only releases...they felt that they will probably miss something on the show if they are busy reading the subtitles, which is a really valid reasoning behind it. Not everyone has the ability to read several words a seconds and digest it to the point where they understand it before being required to do it all over again.

As for the demands, I actually demand dubs because there are plenty of times where I feel as if I want to enjoy an anime without having to subject myself to reading everything and hopefully not missing a subtle nuance that will go on, especially in shows like AIR and Kanon.

The only problem I have with dubbed anime is that some phrases in Japanese (for example "I will use this drill to pierce the heavens!!") sound SO ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS when directly translated to english and a lot of the message and tone intended is possibly lost. It's mostly the cultural gap that drives me to subs where they can make lil notes and stuff. BELIEVE IT!!!

...is it bad that i love dubs and subs equally??? I watch them both and latly there has been times where i only watch the dub. I am hardcore with my anime, i even read untranslated mange and anime from time to time. And i agree it will still be a while till dubbing becomes amazing. However i watch more dub now then ever. Why? Bc the quality is WAY better then 5 or 10 years ago. Watch Astro Boy and lol.
Trust me, dubbing pulls in WAY more people then subs do. I have introduced more people to anime with dubbed stuff then with subs. And with more people buying anime, what comes next? Better dubbing duh. SO first the companies have to dub with what they got then once they have the fan base they can increase dubbing quality and maybe we won't have to hear the same few voices over and over again.
Also, dub studios are limited right now. Until there is some real competition out there we will continue to hear the same people over and over again.

That's an entire double standard. When ADR casts people who sound different then original they get criticized for changing the character, and now you're accusing them of just voice matching?

In case you haven't realized, almost everyone here has been talking about whether or not they think the voices fit or not, NOT WHETHER DUBS ARE ALWAYS GOOD OR NOT.
