After ADV UK's "streamlining" of productions, ADV Germany and Tokyopop Germany are getting out of the game of anime distribution, according to AnimeonDVD. Tokyopop said that they're leaving due to the high number of illegal downloads in Germany, making things unprofitable for them, despite the "interest in anime by young media consumers is enormous." AoD points out that Tokyopop Germany had been releasing DVDs at high prices, with 8 discs for a two-season show (24-26 episodes).
Rather than take up the flag against fansubbing, companies need to rally around digital distribution. FUNi CEO Gen Fukunaga said that their digital distribution on iTunes was nearly matched by the downloads on the Xbox 360. If they make a bigger push, they can certainly turn it into a more profitable venture. For our five European readers, is digital distribution a viable option over there, or is it a venture that really hasn't been explored much yet?
Though, do fansubbers initially sub for themselves or the public?
