Here is some good news for you old-school anime lovers out there, a new anime based off the 1970's show Shinzo Nigen Casshern is going down, set for a Fall 2008 release. But this is not only for those who like the old stuff because there was a live-action adaptation of this franchise released in 2004. Directing this anime will be Shigeyasu Yamauchi who previously directed Saint Seiya, Boys over Flowers, and Dragon Ball Z movie(s), and will be animated by Madhouse.
You know I never watched this anime before, but my interests were always perked whenever I would see that robot in white, Casshern. Now I don't have to put up with the 70's version and just watch the 2008 one. That's the way this world works my friend, when something is old and dirty, we make it new again. You know Japan, Dragon Ball is looking awfully old and cruddy (hint, super hint.)
Check out some Casshern related videos after the jump to know more about this new anime. Though I just realized that Casshern is basically just a human-sized super robot, which is a good thing in my book.
The movie was too "artistic" and just attracted the wrong crowd for it. While the trailers promised action and great special effects, those aspects of the movie took a back seat to the philosophical undertones that the movie failed to convey.
Of course, I'm like one of 10 people on the planet who actually liked the movie. :B I think the reason why people (here) hate this film is just disappointment. Like you said, action was expected, and this didn't deliver in massive Matrix-like quantities. It didn't help that Paramount Home Entertainment cut out almost half an hour in the domestic release and apparently can't speak Japanese or didn't care.
Oh the irony.. I just gave my copy of Casshern to Eb and Stig.
Now something you might like to know Len...
THERE ALREADY WAS A CASSHERN ANIME.
It was called Kashan robot hunter, and came out in the early 90s. It was infact good stuff. Watch it and then watch Casshern, there's a lot of easter eggs in the background of it.
My friends and i saw the edited version. At the end, all my friends reaction were "WTF?". I got what the movie was all about but not so much for those who were expecting a matrix-inspired actioner.
The best thing about the 70's verions is the robotic dog! XD

Yeah... I heard that Paramount didn't even translate parts of the movie in their version. I can't blame your friends going "WTF" for that. I guess they just didn't care that point, but they also waited 4 years after establishing their license to release it. Smart business plan, guys! :P
Golgo 13, Real Drive, Himitsu -Top Secret-, and Casshern.
Damn this year is going to be great for us non-moe otaku fans (there is more to anime than harem comedy romances)
