ADV discontinues more titles -- they better still have Five Centimeters per Second at their Otakon booth photo

Great. More titles have been canceled. I was eyeing picking up Five Centimeters per Second at AnimeNEXT, but decided to pay an extra $10 and get Kino's Journey as a box set. So now, you better still have a decent stock when I go to Otakon, because I don't want to miss out on owning some hot Makoto Shinkai action. Here's the list of titles:

  • Best Student Council

  • Five Centimeters per Second

  • Innocent Venus

  • Robotech 

I never got to sit down and watch through Innocent Venus completely, but I had seen a part of the first episode and it looked somewhat interesting. Can any of you readers recommend this one? Of course, we can just wait to see if FUNi or someone else is going to start picking up these bits that ADV has dropped. I'd be happy to see Five Centimeters grabbed, just to keep Shinkai's work floating around on shelves.

Does discontinued mean the same thing as losing the license? Because if they're different, we could end up seeing ADV sitting on these licenses for a while and praying for someone to make an offer.

Didn't they just distribute Robotech for Harmony Gold? That's something I could definitely see going to FUNi since they also distributed Shadow Chronicles.

@Outlaw_Spike not per-se, but it's a clear indicator that they're looking to sell it off, or it's already been bought.

My ultimate dream is the Makoto Shinkai collection (Voices..., Place Promised, and 5 cm per second) in one Blu-Ray disc.

I'm gonna order 5 cent from amazon then cancel my anime on-demand. with nothing special left on ADV no point in it. I personally hate non-ADV dubs for the most part and have little faith in anyone else but at tihs point that doesn't matter,I'll just be watching the dvds with subs on :\. And innocent venus was decent but the dub, IMO, was a lot worse than the sub.

I never did finish watching Innocent Venus... Best Student Council was decent (despite being a low-budget show), so if if I can find those DVDs for cheap I'll pick it up :)

Is Five Centimeters good? I liked Voices, but never got around to any of Shinkai's other stuff.

And ADV just keeps tumbling down. @@; I'm not surprised, but I didn't expect another one of these announcements so soon either.

Mmmm Blu-ray! I can tell you that it will be awesome and I am sure it's coming. I had found some time ago on bittorrent a 1080 version of Place Promised (but you could notice the compression -- it's about 4GB). I already own the R2 Makoto Shinkai collection which includes some nifty extras like a set of background art and a storyboard booklet. I will be sure to grab the Blu-ray version when it comes out, R1 or R2 (or both!).

@DMV I actually just finished watching Innocent Venus myself and I can definitely recommend it. Kinda hard to explain what it is I liked about it but if you even remotely enjoy mecha then you'll probably like it and even if you don't then there's still a chance you'll like it cuz the mechs don't take up a whole lot of screen time.

I even predicted they would go belly up by the middle of '09. How wrong I am there eh? It sounds to me like ADV is trying their hardest to reenacting the end of Geneon this September.

One of ADVs' latest proudful boasting has been the licensing of Kira.
Sorry there ADV, that show started Really Slow. It did pick up in the 17th or so episode, but do you all think anybody would care enough to continue buying it that far in? Outside of Kira, what other new announcements have they made? They've only been making note -quite often- of all the shows they will NOT be selling... The doors of ADV will be closing far sooner than I would of ever expected. And that is a damn.. Damn shame.

OMFG I've been talking about Byousoku 5cm for a long ass time now. Im glad to see it finally mentioned here. I was begning to think I was the only one who watched it.
