I'm sure we've all had the thought of having one of our favorite non-Japanese shows or movies being adapted into anime before, well one fan has done just that. Paul "Otaking" Johnson, as you may remember him for trying to create a stir a while back about fansubs with his own brand of animation, has let the world see part of his new fan project: The Doctor Who Anime. On the video, we get a glimpse of the process of how the animation is made and assorted clips of finished animation.
Sorry, but no Christopher Eccleston or David Tennant here, but we do have Jon Pertwee as the Third Doctor, who is perfect for an anime adaptation he was known for kicking ass back in the day and is shown doing so. We also get to see iconic Doctor Who villians such as Cybermen and Daleks in awesome anime glory and even a deliciously sinister anime look for The Master. The Doctor's new companion this time is another typical eye candy anime girl but all is okay when we get to see a climactic fight between the Doctor and the Master atop the Tokyo Tower.
Its looking okay except all the human characters expcept the Colonel, Doctor and the Master look a bit too generic "anime-character-with-humungous-eyes" in my opinion. Well, what do you all think?
considering it's a fan project and not aimed @ gaining any money... wow.
honestly are we being a little snobish here cretiquing this as if it was a typical anime. while some of it is a little stiff and mildly generic looking in design, if there ever is an offical doctor anime, odds are some generics would appear.
and maybe my recent divings into old skool anime is clouding my vision but it seems to have a look like something outta the 80s. not in a bad way though.
Ug ug terribly mid 90's animu style is terrible. His style just really clashes with some otherwise awesome background and monster designs. Also, different doc, kthx.
I'm not going to be too subjuctive in my critique of it it beyond saying that I honestly think it's pretty good, but the only fault I find with Otaking is not his style, but his overly egotistical attitude concerning anime....hell, just look at his name.
I mean sure, liking cel produced anime more than CG is one thing, heck, I agree with that part, but all the other stuff he's taken a bit far is all, especially the whole fansub group stuff...
In any case, his style in this example clip is a nice and impressive display of having many tones. My personal preference is more towards a balance of super-fluidity and a moderate number of tones (3 or 4 is plenty for me), but considering this is the style he's shown preference to in the past, he did a good job with it.
I can see how The Master has a Xanatos-like look to him. Then the Cybermen look awesome could easily do a whole ep of them or just the Daleks. Then if your not happy with his apparents, just make it so he doesn't actually show up, he just leaves traps to mess with the Doctor.
For fan work this is very impressive! By the way, an official short animated series was made a few years ago. I believe you can still watch the episodes on the BBC website, "Scream of the Shalka" I think it was called.
