Hey, it's Necros. I'll make this quick: I watch anime, read manga, love Japanese culture, yada yada yada. Due to how busy I am, I generally only have time for the mainstream shows, but I try to watch some non-obvious series when I get the chance. And yes, if the English dub is as good as the Japanese dub or more suited to the tone of the show, I will watch an anime in English.

As was said back in the day when Dtoid got cblogs for the first time: the front page gets more traffic than the cblogs, and even if it's posted first in the cblogs, it doesn't mean an editor necessarily found it via that post, hence not sourcing it.
- On JapanaTen: Ten most spineless male protagonists at 11/12 8:50pm
I don't see Naota as the same kind of whiners that you compare him to. Whereas Shinji and (initially) Simon are spineless, Naota doesn't really care. He doesn't whine so much as become irritated by all the "immaturity" that surrounds his "maturity." Hell, he's got a girl cuddling with him in the opening scene of the anime, and he's not scared or nervous to take action, he's just confused about where his true feelings lie. Maybe he would have appeared more wimpy if the anime was longer, he's already combining with Canti by the second episode, becoming the strong, heroic protector.
Kyon is somewhat similar. You could say he's spineless for not going after Mikuru or Yuki, but seeing as he secretly has feelings for Haruhi, he's not going to make a move on them. As for him going along with Haruhi's plans, he seems more bored than anything - they may be ridiculous, but what else is he going to do? He may be content with regular life, but subconsciously, he'd rather believe in the extraordinary and out-of-place; hence, the reason he stays by Haruhi.
- On New regulations looking to punish ISPs for users stealing content at 11/04 3:04pm
I honestly see this being a bigger issue for American companies than for things from Japan. And yet, for American content, there are alternatives popping up to pirating movies and music outright. Hulu and Last.fm come to mind as good starts.
Now, if this law does start affecting fansubs, and there are no suitable alternatives that I would use, then I'd complain. But if they were to set-up a Hulu-like service (free but paid for through advertising) that I could even stream to my TV (even if I had to pay a small fee per month like with Netflix) that puts content out in a reasonable timeframe like is done for anime like One Piece and Naruto, then I wouldn't mind seeing fansubs completely die.
- On Ponyo comes to DVD next March at 11/02 11:21pm
$40? For a Blu-ray? I know anime generally has a higher price-point, as does Blu-ray, but this is also a more mainstream release thanks to Disney. No way I'd consider spending that much on one film just for high-def.
- On First Impressions: Kampfer at 10/29 12:23pm
I watched the first episode for kicks, and the thing that really annoyed me was how Natsuru was practically a girl to begin with. If he had a guy's voice instead of that wimpy voice he has, then tried to act like a guy while he was a girl, then he'd be much more interesting. But other than some minor awkwardness, he seems too comfortable as a girl. There's no tension over the change by the end of the first episode. And without that gimmick distracting you, the shallowness of all the other characters becomes too apparent.

- On Japanator Recommends: Higurashi: When They Cry (manga) at 10/06 02:05am
Slight clarification: I guess the story is the same, but the anime includes plot elements hinted at in the original game's "TIPS" system, which were not actually tips but simply additional scenes, some relevant to the mystery, some just for fun. These clarified a few things in the story, which definitely becomes more mystery than horror after the first three arcs.
- On Japanator Recommends: Higurashi: When They Cry (manga) at 10/06 02:01am
Having seen all of the anime and glancing at a bit of the manga (first arc), I can say that the art is much better in the manga. In fact, if you haven't started watching the anime already (which I still recommend), the manga would probably be the superior version due to the higher quality art, since the story looks identical (again, just from a glance).
And yet, there's one thing the manga can't capture: Rena's chilling voice in the first arc. Since the first arc is my favorite part of the series and easily the best part of the anime in terms of how it's presented, I can't imagine it without also imagining Rena's voice, matched with proper music. Watching the first arc, at 3AM, with all the lights out...I slept terrible that night, I was so freaked out.
Which ever you choose, everyone should experience Higurashi.
- On The wheel of fate continues: BlazBlue Continuum Shift announced at 09/24 4:16pm
That picture just ruined BlazBlue for me.
There's a list of some of the changes out there, and I believe Carl gets a projectile attack and some necessary buffs, while the top three characters are all being balanced. However, I'm still feeling like this is going to be a full retail release instead of the DLC it should be...
And "loketest"? Sounds like "location test" to me, something most fighting games have before being officially released so that data on bugs and balance issues can be recorded. (The fact that SoulCalibur III came out on consoles before arcades is the reason why it's so unbalanced.)
- On Kanye West vs. Utada Hikaru - Love Lockdown (Passion Remix) and more at 09/02 10:27am
@ Satokoji
Kanye didn't make this mashup, someone else did. Mashups and remixes are common, especially based off of popular artists. Now if you want to apply what you said to his song "Stronger," which is basically just him rapping over a slowed down version of Daft Punk's "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" with some added beats, then you'd be right on the money.
- On ADV is shutting down? No surprise there at 09/02 10:15am
Shit. I honestly thought they'd pull out. I'm not surprised, but since I don't pay attention that much, I thought that they were managing to trim the fat and recover. Shame.
- On Now that's news: Japan's election coverage makes me scared to vote at 08/31 00:16am
The TBS one actually seems inspired by some ads for the original Eva movies, if I remember them correctly. As for the top one? It looks similar to the opening shots of the schools in Persona 1 and 2.

- On America rips out Ponyo's musical heart, replaces it with a rock-hard Auto Tune core at 08/15 11:51am
First thing I noticed was that this isn't rock like the video said at all, but the same mass-produced pop sound garbage that you can hear on any Top 40 radio station. I wondered why they'd take a theme like that and turn it into a rock song, but a pop song makes more sense.
Anyway, maybe it's just me, but I don't like happy Japanese songs like the original theme. I'll recognize that it probably fits the movie, but to me, it sounds like a little Japanese girl singing (which has never sounded good to me) and a guy singing the equivalent of a preschooler's TV show theme. I still preferred it to this new version.
However, if what other comments say is true - that it's only used in the second half of the credits - then people are whining about absolutely nothing. It'd be one thing if they removed all the original music and put in generic pop rock in the background, but at the end of the credits? Get over it. What Disney does with their marketing is debatable (such as always under-promoting Ghibli films), but at least the production headed by John Lasseter is respectful and well-done.
- On Japanator Recommends: When They Cry (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) at 08/15 11:42am
The quality issues can get kinda rough, but Higurashi is a series that everyone should see. The only low points for me were in the second season, as some repeating events just made things drag out a bit too long - I wanted to say "alright, I know what happens here, get moving!"
Other than that, the mystery is deep, and the first few arcs are amazingly terrifying. The first one is probably the most horrific in its presentation; I had initially meant to watch the first episode or two before going to bed one night, but it was so gripping that I wanted to finish up the first arc (I had no idea about the world resetting at the time), so I watched all of the first arc in one sitting. Alone. In the dark. By the end, my face was inches from the monitor and I went to bed paranoid.
tl;dr: Watch it.
