Evening roundup: Some missed SDCC news; Japan wants more foreigners

Evening roundup: Some missed SDCC news; Japan wants more foreigners photo

Writing news isn't a ton of fun, I'll admit. There are only so many words I can say about a license that I've never heard of, and will likely never hear of again, unless it shows up in our office. Well, that's provided someone from Destructoid doesn't just take our packages to spite us. Nick Chester is evil enough to do that, you know.

So, let's try this out instead: after the jump are the highlights of the dry news bits from the anime, manga, and hard news world. This way, the front page isn't going to get so cluttered with boring lil' news posts, and you'll see a bunch more fun and interesting pieces. Wacky news or stuff that really interests us will still be in their own posts, it's just this "industry events" stuff that should be posted gets collected in here.

Tonight, we've got a new trailer for Genius Party Beyond, some good news for people wanting to learn Japanese, and a bit of stuff we missed from SDCC. Enjoy the new format after the jump!

Sky Crawlers is going to be at the Venice Film Festival [Akibana]

Why the hell not? I'm glad to see anime making bigger strides and appearing at film festivals. The medium has already proven that it's strong narratively, artistically, and emotionally; the only problem has been this is rarely recognized outside the U.S. unless the work is by Hayao Miyazaki.

New Genius Party Beyond trailer is up [Anime Nation]

You can see it here. I haven't gotten a chance to sit down and watch any of the Genius Party related items, but I can't help but be happy about this. I love collaborative works, and especially shorts. It's a quick, simple message, or just plain fun.

Japan is looking to expand the number of foreign students to 300,000 by 2020 [Asahi]

Japan was the big thing back in the 80s and early 90s. It represented all the wealth and power of the world, 'till the economy collapsed. There's still some lingering interest (as Japanator proves), but by and large, the mass media is more interested in China. Well, this is great for us studying, or wanting to study Japanese. I had a great experience at Kansai Gaidai, but I know plenty of other schools can offer a wider cirriculum than what KGU offered. Now is a good time to start bugging your university for an expanded Japanese program, and more study abroad options.

Kobayashi isn't in a losing streak anymore [Japan Probe]

Jesus. Is this man going to be the Tiger Woods of professional eating? There's only so many things that I can watch people shove down their throats as quickly as possible, and satay is pushing that limit. I guess the only bright side is that they're expanding their diet from just hot dogs. Next up: competitive salad eating!

Otakon is advertising on Comcast [Otakon]

I found this really amusing. I would figure that just about everyone who lives in Baltimore knows about Otakon. I mean, the thing takes over the BCC. I feel like they'd be better off running a PSA-type ad for all those adults wondering why there are skimpily-dressed women parading about with swords as big as them.

Last Gasp licenses Tokyo Zombie, Turner licenses Fancy Gigilo Pelu [Publisher's Weekly]

Just some minor licensing announcements that got swallowed up in the SDCC clusterfuck.
