Facepalm: Lady says Gantz made her son crazy photo

"Won't someone think of the children?!"

That's likely the cry Margaret Barbaree uttered as she pleaded with the Crestview, Florida City Council to remove manga from the shelves of the public library.  Well, actually, she called it "anime", but really, it's manga.

Specifically, Gantz, everyone's favorite giant featureless black sphere manga, which Barbaree's teenage son apparently ninja'd from the library's top shelves. Oh libraries! You know the kids will always be attracted to whatever you're hiding on those top shelves!

So traumatizing was the first volume of Gantz (and selected chapters of Psychic Academy) that Barbaree claimed “My son lost his mind when he found this. Now he's in a home for extensive therapy."

Woah. I knew Gantz was a bit messed up, since the header pic (sans Hans Landa) is from chapter 003, "The Naked Suicide Girl." But Psychic Academy? Now that's news to me!

My sympathies go out to Mrs. Barbaree's poor, institutionalized son. I hear nuthouse libraries only contain dog-eared copies of Love Hina.

[Big thanks to EinherjarUrashima for the tip!]

Facepalm: Lady says Gantz made her son crazy photo

MOAR weird news:

Legacy Comments

When in doubt blame animu and mangos! Not her crappy parenting job!
Oooh, I can see where these comments are going.
She says Gantz made her song crazy.

I say she made her song crazy.

Why don't we ask the boy what he thinks?
Why the hell did I write song instead of Son TWICE!!!

damn my fingers
The first volume is NOTHING. Get to the temple mission. Thats some seriously messed up shit.

However, I dunno how I feel about that kind of manga in a public library...but at the same time, if i can find it on the internet in 2 seconds, i should be able to get it in a library too.
I'm always indifferent to these sorts of complaints from parents.

I was reading novels (you know, those things with 100% words and no pictures?) that were just as disturbing as Gantz from a young age (because back then I skipped right from chapter books to adult novels, young adult fiction was nothing but eating disorders and cutting yourself, because, you know, that's not as f'ed up or anything.) No one gives a shit if kids are reading about lesbian samurai/vampire sex (real book I read as a teen) as long as there are no pictures, I guess.
GANTZ may be messed up at times (well...a lot of the time), but it takes a real ignorant/irresponsible parent to blame their kids' problems on anything entertainment/media related.
"That book had been in the general stacks, on a top shelf in a section with other graphic novels and comic books not geared toward young readers."

AKA her son was looking for porn
No one will care, everyone in my state is crazy.
>> AKA her son was looking for porn

TOTALLY.

The good thing is that the library replied with a "NO U" and everyone, except the woman (Who has a history of trying to band Manga and Anime from libraries and stuff, under the premise of calling it "pornography"), wins.
This is out of left field but how do you change your avatar? Usually it's somewhere around the My Profile button, but that just has some notice about merging accounts.
Getting tired of bad parents blaming other things for their own failures. Who's to blame for your children turning out like you didn't want them to? Is it the music they listen to, games they play, things they read, what they watch?

Even if those things had a significant enough impact on a person to change them, it comes down to the fact that they were allowed to do those things by their parents. Even if a parent says they had no idea their child was reading, listening, or watching these types of things, isn't it again the parent's fault for not inserting themselves into their child's life enough?

Being a parent doesn't just mean having the kid. It's a responsibility that lasts the rest of your life. Don't blame others when it turns out you're terrible at your job.
Now let's keep in mind, Gantz is indeed a disturbing as hell manga, but seriously, this is just an example of bad parenting. I mean if reading a comic book put your son into traumatic shock, then there's clearly something wrong on your end and as a parent, you should be acting appropriately to prevent situations like this.
so the fact that her son was doing drugs that she just happened to leave around the house had nothing to do with her son being institutionalized, right....

Im sorry, :(
Well if just reading a manga can traumatize your kid to the point of needing extensive therapy, then maybe you should be more worried about your kid then banning manga from libraries.

That said, I agree manga that are meant for adults should not be available in libraries. Really it's not about the fact that it's manga but it's the mature contents. Like how Playboy isn't available in libraries.
@yenner actually, playboy is available in libraries, just not out in the stacks. Our hometown library had a placeholder card in the periodicals saying it was available from the librarian with proper ID, and you couldn't take it out of the library. Which, if you think about it, has pretty much the same effect as not having it...
I also love that the city council pretty much gave her a "you're crazy" response after they looked into it. I'm shocked they actually looked into it rather than banning that evil "magma" stuff.
I read her name as "Barbecue".
I was in my room and I was just like staring at the wall thinking about everything, but then again I was thinking about nothing. And then my mom came in, and I didn't even know she was there. She called my name and I didn't hear her and then she started screaming “Mike, Mike!” And I go “what? What's the matter?” She goes “what's the matter with you?” I go “there's nothing wrong, mom.” Shes all “don't tell me that! You're on drugs!” I go “no mom, I'm not on drugs. I'm ok, I'm just thinking, you know? Why don't you get me a Manga?” She goes “No! You're on drugs!” I go “mom, I'm ok. I'm just thinking.” She goes “No! You're not thinking, you're on drugs! Normal people don't be acting that way!” I go “mom, just get me a Manga! Please, all I want is a Manga!” And she wouldn't give it to me! All I wanted was a Manga, just one Manga, and she wouldn't give it to me! Just a Manga!
She's telling the truth though. Do you know anybody who likes Gantz and is sane?
I guess crazy runs in the family
@ Tuskus

I could probably pass a sanity test and I like Gantz.
see future parents.

this is what happens when you try to homeschool your kids on a religious compound in the middle of the Florida Everglades. they go insane from the slightest bit of outside stimuli.
wait a minute. I didn't know Gantz is available in manga form. (jumps in car and heads to closest bookstore)
.... wtf?
If this therapy isn't Yotsuba&!, she hasn't learned anything.
@reptilesandsamurai

That.Was.Awesome
I know you’re not supposed to judge people based on appearances but, come on, she looks like that while addressing the issue she claims caused her son to lose his mind? Something tells me there’s more to this than dem thar Chinese cartoons.

Besides everybody knows that the only image capable of causing insanity is the one with the dogs playing poker.
OH NOOOOOO! somebudy help tht woman's hair!
Somehow, I think this may be one of those cases where forced sterilization should have be enforced...the child would have been save, the legal system would have been saved time and money, Japanator and an entire nation saved billions of facepalms...

She look like the kind of person who believes everything can be solved by complaining/suing. Seriously.
@sewl? and MihoChan9: I completely dounle-agree.

Now to remember this event i made this: http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n293/megatoon_15/faillo.jpg
On a serious note, she should check her family history. Many forms of mental illness are genetic. The ones that aren't tend to require the sufferer to endure pretty severe trauma or poisoning.
In the meanwhile, Twilight is a smash hit with tweens across the world. I call that one a good influence, alright!
Institutionalizing her son and blaming manga.

Darwin Awards nominee.
Read the article guys. Some of the people who signed her petition claim they were misled because she told them it was a petition to ban porn on libraries. Obviously the one who needs therapy is this woman.
"Oh good lord, she's been at it for three hours, when is she going to shut up, so I can go home and watch Highschool of the Dead..."
"Maybe if we ignore her, she'll go away."
"Er, Ma'am? If you could shut up for a second, we've come to a conclusion? And that is, you're an idiot."
GOD FORBIT she just.....I don't know. TELL HER SON NOT TO READ IT & NOT MAKE A HUGE DEAL OUT OF IT. I mean, since when is GANTZ for kids? I think it states on the manga (AND IN) clearly that it's not.

*sigh* I'm really hating how parents are overreacting these days. It also doesn't help she's not knowing what she's talking about, considering she called it "anime" when it's not....
@Mad March Harris

I love how you have "Mad" in your title, and you're talking about passing a sanity test...

Maybe they're confused by the Women speaking about Anime and are taking about the Gantz anime, which I've heard poor things about, at least in comparison with the Manga...
Who the hell lets children unsupervised near manga. Those bastards can rip the pages, damage it or even break the spine. That woman is a psycho to just let her kid run around and possibly murder a volume of Yotsuba&.

So why didn't she just look at the stuff he borrowed when she was with him? Or how about looking at it beforehand? She's misleading people and is obviously scapegoating the manga for her son's issues. She should consider that he had issues before he found the manga, and that it came from her. Maybe she should be in therapy with her son.
I am still waiting for someone to cause bloodbath since they read Battle Royale...
well Gantz can be pretty disturbing at times, but driving you crazy? nahhhhh
Am I wrong to say that Franken Fran beats the ass off of Gantz for sheer OMGWEIRD?

Man. If only my mom had seen Ninja Scroll after I brought it home from Blockbuster, so many years ago. Lolz all around. >D
lady your son went insane because of your hair.....ok all joking aside the kids probably going through stuff, I have seirous doubts that Gantz is going to cause insanity
Her son probably went insane because every time he tried to have fun, she got on top of him and nagged him.

And then embarrassed him by causing all this shit. I'd be institutionalized then, too.

BLAME IT ALL ON THE MANGA. DARN THOSE ASIANS AND THEIR EVIL FROM THE DARK LAND OF JAPAN, DRAGGING ALL OUR CHILDREN TO HELL WITH THEIR STUPID CARTOONS AND MOE GIRLS.

Though, more seriously... If he was so impressionable that a mere work of fiction caused him to need therapy, he shouldn't be allowed near cable television at all. Manga isn't the only effed up literature that can make you nuts.

For instance, let's look at just about everything on SyFi...
Did I say SyFi? I should have said Disney...
Why didn't she just check on what the hell her son is reading?
Anime huh?
LOL This is so many kinds of effed up. And Gantz? Yeah, its messed up. But so is everything else in the library except for the kids section. Well, thats to be questioned also...
