Final Fantasy VII rap album is surprisingly good

11:00 PM on 02.17.2011

We've all heard our share of nerdcore rap and rock, often with a bit of chiptunes thrown in. The problem with these artists tends to be that they feel inaccessible to those who aren't real hardcore nerds, or those who don't get all of the references. Well a rapper named Random (a.k.a. Mega Ran) is breaking all the rules with his new album Black Materia: Final Fantasy VII. It's actually a pretty sweet album that follows the storyline of FFVII without being too obscure.

The best part of this album? It sounds like real rap. Like, socially acceptable rap to some extent. The sample song on Complex Magazine's website sounds really awesome. It has a cool instrumental backing and a nice beat, perhaps it reminds me a bit of rap from a little earlier in time, perhaps the 90s or early 2000s, but either way, it's pretty sweet and if you listen closely enough, you can hear a lot of the FFVII story laid out before you.

You can find a digital download of Random's album on Amazon for $7.99 which is a great price for sixteen tracks! Check out one of Random's songs on Complex's site, or hit the jump and listen to his song Mako Reactor paired with FFVII gameplay!
