Here's the hot story of the day: the first trailer for the Dragonball movie has hit the 'net after someone recorded it at the Brand Licensing Expo Europe. We're supposed to officially see the trailer later on in the month, but here it is early...and without any audio.
To be honest, I find it hard to really make any judgements based on what's been shown here, simply because it's a bunch of random clips thrown together without any narrative being told with voiceover or dialogue. Kotaku was overly-harsh on the trailer, in my opinion. Taking all these scenes severely out of context is something I just can't do, and so I'm just going to wait to form an opinion until after the actual trailer gets released.
But that doesn't mean y'all can't rip into it. Have at it in the comments!
Sound or not, that looks incredibly stupid. Not to mention the way they changed the characters is pretty horrible. I mean Justin Chatwin as Goku? No. Just no. And then James Marsters as Piccolo? I love him as an actor and I love Piccolo. But the two combined is bad.
Overall Dragonball looks like an overpriced holywood bloat fest that just shows that they have no idea how to treat anime.
Let this be the last anime movie they ever do. PLEASE.
i dun know what it is, but i can tell from the images shown what kind of story it's going to be like.
some modern group (possibly the red ribbon army) has found some sort of secret temple or inscription that tells of the dragonballs, capable of granting the weilder any wish. coincidentally, our hero, goku, possibly an adopted alien or just some reincarnation of some ancient mystic, has the last dragonball. this of course leads to some epic struggle between RR army and goku & pals with some romantic elements thrown in.
throw in plenty of action and CG and this is the result - dragonball.

You know I stood up and fought for the Dragon Ball movie for awhile now, always telling everyone to just wait for the trailer. Well, its here, and I’m pissed! Goku doesn’t kiss people, he kills people (or at least beats them until they become his friends.) For some reason I was expecting something like Speed Racer: colorful, flashy, bright; but instead I get your average Jet Li movie with added fireballs. This isn’t what I was expecting, this wasn’t supposed to be your average movie; this is Dragon Ball God damn it!
As you probably already know, this trailer does not have sound and is of poor visual quality. So perhaps, I can look forward to the real trailer with sound, when the announcer states: “This is not what the actual movie looks like, this is just to mess with the people who watched it without our permission. Burn in hell!” It’s a long shot, but now it’s the only thing I have to look forward to.
The thing a lot of people don't realize is that Dragon Ball(the original) is more martial arts. It is when we get to Dragon Ball Z, where the aerial battles and lazers dominate.
So people, I suggest you go and pick up a Dragon Ball manga and look again, because DB was not about breaking faces, it was about comedy, adventure, and martial arts.
I tried to only care about what they'll do with the personalities of the characters, and tried not to be interested in the changes of their appearances, so I thought I'd be slightly satisfied with the movie at the least. But based on Goku's actions in this preview, it actually does seem that they have "tweaked" his personality, and I'm a bit (actually, a whole lot) disappointed in that. I could just be interpreting things differently though, so I guess I'll wait for an extended trailer (with sound) to make my final judgment.
As long as he still has his oblivious, funny, carefree, and happy-go-lucky-but-serious-when-fighting-strong-opponents attitude, I'll be able to tolerate watching this.
I've watched Dragon Ball: Magic Begins (back then in 1992) and it was awesome. Well back then I was 7 so I'm approaching this movie with the mind set of a 7 years old. My opinion: too serious!
*Before I watched*: "eh, it's only a cheap cam rip....can't make too many judgements from it anyway right?"
*After*: "........ can I nuke you now Fox? or should I save that WMD for when you attempt the Live Action Akira?"
Seriously....what the hell.... Dragonball is about fighting and kicking ass martial arts style, yet we see Bulma with a F***ING GUN!!!....................this is so bogus it pisses me off...
Even with all of this, I'm still going to see it. Moths to the flame, and there's going to be a lot more of flaming on the internet (and of Fox's studios) once this hits.
WTF!! why does Goku kiss a girl. Can't you make a single stupid American movie without kissing people or getting horny and having sex with people and/or aliens and/or objects??!!
First you make Goku look like your typical highschool American Douche bag then you turn him into an emo looking highschool American Douche bag who kisses girls!!.
And why the hell is piccolo white??!! You have something against Aliens with color?
You know what.. just forget it. I'll just watch this 'thing' that they call a 'movie' with a train wreck in mind. Because that's probably the only way I could enjoy it.
At least Speed Racer stayed true to the anime. This, I can't tell it apart from any other martial arts movie I've seen in the past few years. It might end up good, but I've got a sinking feeling it'll end up a stinking pile of crap.
dunno why everyones getting pissed off, its not like dragonball was well written or materialized. Save it for the cowboy bebop movie. It was anime spam. Quit acting like it deserved some kind of masterpiece. Look at how well speed racer did when it stuck to orginal art concept.
Ya really pathogen, WTF drugs are you smoking DBZ was friggin EPIC!!!! don't try to compare the epic sagas of win to cowboy failbop cuz compared to DBZ that's what it is, next you'll be saying Gurren Lagann was bad or some crazy shit, followed by a ban to the face if you do btw, and I don't even need to me a MOD to know that one. It is just some FAIL director messing up life.
