First Impressions: Kohime Musou

Much like Fate Stay Night, this series is based on an eroge of it's namesake, which in turn is loosely based on the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. It has a fair amount of fan service, and features a large cast of young girls who fight in cute outfits. If you're thinking you've heard this before somewhere, you might be right. There happens to be several other series that share similarities, including Ikki Tousen and Koutetsu Sangokushi. Unlike those series however, the story seems to be a bit more highbrow, which took me by surprise considering it's supposedly an eroge adaption. It's also set in the same time period in China as the three kingdoms saga, as opposed to Ikki Tousen's present day Japan. So how does it stack up? Hear my impressions after the jump.

Basically, the story revolves around a woman named Kan'u, aka Guan Yu, who wields a spear and is known as a "beautiful black haired bandit hunter," and her adopted sister Chouhi, aka Zhang Fei. The plot seems to loosely follow the novel it's based on, but takes quite a few liberties. For example, the characters meet when one is committing crimes, while in the novel it's merely a chance encounter. It's also said that Guan Yu himself was once a bandit, so I'd say it's pretty ironic that they have her hunting bandits instead. With that said though, there should always be room for creative license. The story follows them on their journey as they meet new warriors, each with their own ambitions.

To be honest, if it wasn't for the fact that I adore anything that's remotely Sangokushi related, I would have a hard time with this series. The story has been told numerous times and I can understand how that might not be so appealing. In addition, it tries almost too hard to be cute. There are chibi scenes interspersed throughout the show, which adds to that factor, but they did give me a chuckle or two. I should also probably mention that the show has no male characters in either lead or supporting roles, which can be a bonus or a disappointment depending on how you look at it. However, it didn't really seem to bother me too much, as I happen to like women. Especially hots ones who wield spears. Okay, so I lied, maybe I wouldn't have that hard of a time. In short, it could be worse. It could be Ikki Tousen.
