First Impressions: Nyankoi!

First Impressions: Nyankoi! photo

Summary: There's talking cats -- what else do you want?

In my seasonal anime lineup, I always try to work in one silly, off-the-wall title. For me, this season, Nyankoi! is it. But that's not to discount this show. As crazy as the premise sounds, it's still a pretty solid watch. So far, there's plenty to like here...especially if you like cats.

Junpei wants nothing to do with felines. At all. Females? Yes, and one in particular: Mizuno Kaede. BTW, she loves cats. Of course.  But Junpei does his best to stay away, mostly because he's allergic to them. That's already problem territory, but when our hero accidentally defaces a sacred cat statue, things become much worse.

Junpei wakes up the next morning to find that he can hear his cat talk. Later he finds that he can hear all cats. His worst nightmare, essentially. No, it's actually the prelude to his worst nightmare, as the talking cats inform him that if he does not perform 100 good deeds for the cats of the world, the curse will not be broken, and he will turn into a cat himself.

I was surprised. Nyankoi isn't the horny show that I thought it would be. Even the opening animation fooled me. It seems like it will have a bit of substance, actually. There's a budding love story here. It may be too early to call, but I think things will get interesting, and this show will be less about the 100 deeds and more about Junpei's love life.

Oops!

One thing's for sure: this show is hilarious. The scenes and situations are hilarious, and the cats themselves are too. Some of the quick over-the-top gags really had me rolling. In one scene, cats were really putting the pressure on to do a good deed, else they would move closer to him. On the ground, a distance overlay, much like you'd find in a strategy game, measured the closing gap between Junpei and his attackers.

Incoming! INCOMING!

So far, so good. Solid animation and great character designs (the cats especially) don't hurt. It hits all the cute and funny targets, but there's even more than that to offer.

What I liked:

  • Talking cats! Hello!
  • Comedy that's fresh, and not stupid
  • Cute character design

What I didn't like:

  • The intro was cute, but it tricked me into thinking this was harem anime
  • Not enough Nyan~ jokes!
