First Impressions: Okami Kakushi

First Impressions: Okami Kakushi photo

Summary: Tastes like Higurashi, except with more of a creepy cult feeling and 100% more crippled girls. Also, I'm convinced the father is writing Spice and Wolf.

Based on a story by Ryushiki07, the guy behind Higurashi: When They Cry, Okami Kakushi certainly has the elements of being a creepy horror show. On the surface, things remind me quite a bit of Higurashi: a young kid transfers to a school out in the boonies where there's a conflict, and now some mysterious stuff no one wants to talk about.

What makes this interesting is that it isn't students killing each other -- at least not from what we've seen -- but some gaggle of mysterious scythe-wielding psychos, in what appears to be a conflict between members of the old side of town and the new side.

So, follow me after the jump to see just what this show is like.

One of my biggest problems with watching Okami Kakushi is that the plot feels really slow. We get bits and pieces of hints towards a story, but it's largely masked by an off-kilter school atmosphere and some not-quite right characters.

The students at school have a very "drink the Kool-Aid" vibe about them, with everyone more than excited about the new student coming in. Every free moment they have, the entire class crowds around his desk, asking him simple questions or begging him to join them in one activity or another. Even the teacher feels the need to have "skinship" with this student.

Alright, cool. Whatever. There's also that one girl in the class who stands apart from everybody else and inspires a great amount of fear. She doesn't really say all that much, so it's the big classroom mystery right now.

I think I'll call her Holo...

Back at home, life is alright. His father is a novel writer, and is working on his latest project, Spice and Wolf. It pays the bills, and keeps him and his sister happy. His neighbors are nice, and the girl next door is in love with our protagonist, Hakase, even if he seems to be afraid of girls touching him.

She got into the apartment just fine, why can't she get out?

Like I mentioned before, there has to be something creepy about the whole thing. Enter the scythe-wielding maniacs who kill someone at the end of each episode. They, portraying themselves as righteous wolves, come to slay those who have fallen, disgracing the old side of town.

But, that's at the end of the episode. Up until that point, the creepiness is almost non-existent. The show actually proves itself to bit quite boring, but it keeps you going just long enough so that you hope some plot will develop. I'll keep watching this show, just because I hope things get more serious soon. I'm sure it will, I'm just getting impatient because of the lack of legitimate scariness in this series.

Pros:

  • Episode previews are super creepy
  • Good animation

Cons:

  • Plot feels like it's chugging
  • Half-assed OP and ED
