First Impressions: Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt photo

Welcome to the most divisive show of the season!

GAINAX, masters of the animation medium. "Well, supposedly, right? What do they think they're doing making this crazy Powerpuff Girls-lite show now? Looks like utter crap!" That's certainly a popular point of view on this show. Another perspective is that this is "the second coming and it will rejuvenate anime!"

I don't really think that's correct either. Mike LeChevallier and I decided to tackle the First Impressions of this show together -- and while we don't think it's the best thing since sliced bread, it is a ridiculously over-the-top and fun show. Hit the jump for our full thoughts on it.

Ben: ‬ The art. Obviously a lot of people either like to or dislike the art, it's been a pretty contentious talking point. What's your opinion on it and how the show uses it?‬

Mike: ‬ ‪You know, I thought the art would become some sort of a large focus point for me as I watched the show, yet, within the first few minutes of episode 1, I totally ceased to pay attention to the art and simply attempted to gain some sort of idea as to what this series is actually going to be about. This is probably due to the fact that the art style was what many people were either complaining about, or claiming was awesomeness prior to the airing.‬ We can of course get into the two occasions just within the first episode that the show actually CHANGED animation style.

Ben:  ‬ ‪Absolutely.‬

image3

Mike: ‬ ‪Three, actually. Though two were the same style.‬ The transformation scene, which was unarguably a high point. And then when each of the two demons were destroyed: the shit monster and the car/truck/train thing. When it went live-action...I have to admit I was laughing pretty hard.

Ben: ‬ ‪While the live-action bits were very funny, the transformation scene was a very self-aware point in the episode. It was GAINAX saying, "yeah, we know what our die-hard fans want. And we're going to give it to you."‬ And they gave us one hell of a transformation scene.

image4

Mike: ‬ ‪Agreed. Although, like I said before in the fall preview podcast, I don't think GAINAX really ever goes into a production with the idea of trying to deliver fan-service.‬ I mean, just from this first episode, I think it could go almost 50-50 with people saying "YESSSSS" or "DROPPED". It was interesting that they put the shit monster bit first, as I felt that was by far the weaker of the two mini-stories.

Ben: ‬ ‪Oh, definitely. The speed-demon story ended up being much stronger from a storytelling perspective (communicating the laughs and being clever at it) as well as the action scenes. Although, as long as we're getting this type of variety (in artists, storyboarders, and directors) each week, I think we'll continue to see a stellar mix of episodes.‬

image8

Mike: ‬ ‪I've watched this first episode twice, and it actually felt stronger the second time. As I was essentially viewing it the first time around to get all the plot details fleshed out as I could (they're in there, just buried), the second viewing allowed me to get a feel for the characterization as well as just how fluid everything came together.‬ The first 5 or so minutes of the episode are slow, no doubt. I didn't really enjoy the scene where Garterbelt was trying to brief (lol) the girls on their mission. Speaking of the girls, I really like both of them.

‪I found it a nice change of pace that, without any sort of guidance towards their objectives, they would basically just sit around on earth doing their favorite things: Panty would have sex and Stocking would eat sweets.‬

Ben: ‬ ‪Indeed. While I will say that some limited use of these traits will work better in the long run. If the punchline of every joke featuring Panty is "Wow, she's such a whore" then in the end it's going to get stale. In fact, I felt this happening a little bit in the first episode already.‬

Mike: ‬ ‪Yeah, I can't really argue against that.‬

image9

Ben: ‬ ‪So I do think some proper moderation of the comedy will result in a stronger show.

Mike: ‬ ‪Although Panty had some great lines: "Go fuck your bike, douchebag." That had me going for a minute.‬ There are some other clever bits of comedy in there not having to do with Panty's vice. Example: the names of things. Their vehicle is named See Through. Panty's gun is named Backless. Did they say what Stocking's sword is called? Lace? Fishnet?

Ben: ‬ ‪Haven't heard it yet.‬

image5

Mike: ‬ ‪So people were harping on this because it seemed like a Powerpuff Girls rip off. To be honest, that show did not pop into my mind once during this episode. And I watched the Powerpuff Girls regularly.‬ What about you?

Ben: ‬ ‪I tweeted something similar earlier: can everyone please stop making the Powerpuff Girls comparison? Because there's really nothing there aside from a vaguely similar art style. Although, if we want to talk about origins, Imaishi is very much a Western animation fan. This is probably really obvious if you've watched it or seen the trailers, but he did list PPG and Invader Zim as some influences. In the end though, that can be said of a lot of artists, and Imaishi just had the chance to make his dream "Western" show‬.

Mike: ‬ ‪The biggest comparison to a Western animation so far for me is that Chuck, their dog, is basically GIR from Invader Zim.‬

Ben: ‬ ‪Which Imaishi admitted, I believe.‬

Mike: ‬ ‪Indeed.‬ But this show is very much Japanese, the voice acting cast is very strong...and features some of our favorites from this year's strongest anime. Panty's VA also voiced Holly from Heroman, and Stocking's VA did Mika from Durarara!!

image12

Ben: ‬ ‪Indeed. Let's actually hit up the music a bit. I felt that it was pretty much fantastic all the way around. You?‬

Mike: ‬ ‪It was probably the best part of the episode for me.‬ The only track I wasn't totally a fan of is the OP.

Ben: ‬ ‪I'm going to be very interested in the OST whenever it shows up.‬

Mike: ‬ ‪Taku Takahashi does a great job.‬ GAINAX never slacks in that department.

image10

Ben: ‬ ‪So before we mention our closing thoughts, (and we touched on this briefly already) I thought I'd ask: what do you think needs the most improvement in the show?‬

Mike: ‬ ‪I'm with you on what you were saying about the comedic content earlier. If the show wants to continue to be largely a comedy, it needs to find different ways of delivering that humor than just Panty's sex-capades.‬ Also, I'm not sure how formulaic the show is going to continue to be. I see the basic formula that the first episode laid out, and, while it worked, it might get tiresome overtime if they don't find different ways of presenting it. It's GAINAX, so I have faith that they will.‬

Ben: ‬ ‪Yup, in the end I feel that the show just needs a little more technique in shipping the humor. If they can improve on that, it'll end up being exactly what Imaishi is hoping it to be: a fun, crass, and entertaining show with tons of little tributes to Western cartoons.‬

Mike: ‬ ‪I saw a lot of people on Twitter and message boards shouting out that the show is "just plain stupid" or outright "dumb." I have to argue that it's actually relatively smart in the way it pulls off what it does in just this one episode. The production team established many aspects of the show that people were hesitant about, and they either brought people in who were likely to keep watching, or alienated those who were already talking crap.‬

Ben: ‬ ‪It's definitely going to be the most divisive show this season‬

Mike: ‬ ‪GAINAX is one of the few companies that can bring fan-service without actually trying to do so.‬ The fans service themselves. (No innuendo intended.)

Ben: ‬ ‪Well.‬ I think I'll leave it at that.

Legacy Comments

I went in wanting to like it. I like the visual style, but everything else was not funny, not clever, not revolutionary in any way. Just bland noise. I didn't even notice the music. So, I came away disappointed and after this sentence I won't waste any more time thinking abut it.
Absolutely one of the greatest anime of this Fall season. In my opinion, the animation is flawless in every department, from the natural Western style they're going for, to the traditional anime style thrown in for good measure. This is a very diverse and delicious treat from GAINAX and I am surely stoked for more episodes. Keep 'em comin', GAINAX!

Also, I was incredibly giddy when I heard M-FLO was going to be composing the music. An absolutely flawless soundtrack so far!
Looks and sounds extraordinary, but I'm no fan of gross-out comedies and this is not even a good gross-out comedy so far. Second section was by far better than the first, and I like the manic energy, but it needs to improve a lot to keep me.

" I don't think GAINAX really ever goes into a production with the idea of trying to deliver fan-service"

Clearly you have been watching a completely different gainax to the rest of us Mike.
I slowed reading when I saw Invader Zim mentioned at an influence. I stopped reading when you mentioned one character was basically Gir. Why? Because I have to go watch this right away.

"I'm Running! I'm Running!"
What Zac said, minus sentence#1 and half of sentence#2.

And I don't know if this show can really be considered fresh and revolutionary. The artistic style has already been done in some shape or form in animation, and if it is innovative at all, it's only by a hair. And the humor is a slight mix of Excel Saga and.... something else..

so I can't really call this show all that 'fresh'
Really? You two saw the transformation as purely fan service, rather than simultaneously an overt stab at the over sexualization of magical girl transformation sequences by comparing them to stripper routines? That's an interesting perspective for you two to take.

Still, this show seems like a breath of fresh air to me. I didn't have very high expectations to go in, so this show was a pleasant surprise.
@EBK

Oh, sure, it's definitely a parody of a magical girl transformation, but you really think it's not going to be received as fanservice, regardless of the original intent?

@Mari Hikiko

Well, I don't think it's fresh or revolutionary. I just think it's fun and crass. And the crass part needs to be done a little better. Anyone who thinks this is revolutionary is missing the point of the show. So I guess I'm agreeing with you.

@KagatoTEG

He's not Gir verbatim, just a lookalike.

@Dragonzigg

Looking over that again, I'm not sure what Mike meant by that either.
Love the style and randomness, but hated the comedy, it failed to deliver.
" shit monster" is a big reason why I don't like this crap. I take my anime too seriously. I go to pure comedy anime for comedy...I don't like it when things mix because it ends up as a jack of spades and those are always , in the 350+ anime I've seen, a waste of time when I could instead be watching a REALLY good comedy or a REALLY good action series instead.
@Ben Huber

Well, that's why I said "simultaneously." I got the impression from the article that you two thought it was just purely fan service rather than a mix of the two elements, but if I'm mistaken in that view then I rescind my questioning of your perspective.
I absolutely hated every minute of it. to the point of only making it through the shit monster before turning the fucking thing off watching something that was actually funny.

the animation was technically good, but it still felt lop sided and annoying to me. the characters were annoying and unappealing from their first second on camera and the art style made the whole thing feel like it was just some 12 year old's pitch to nickelodean that somehow got made.

oh, but i barely noticed the music. so you can chalk that as being inoffensive enough to call a minor win.

a profoundly stupid and ugly show that has no redeeming qualities but for some reason will be heralded as good for reasons beyond me. like K-on all over...but with fart jokes
For the record though, I have no resentment for the ppl who like this show, lol. I don't want to come off as a 'show-snob'. If you like P&S, that's cool, to each his own.
@Dragonzigg

If GAINAX is so big on delivering fan-service, as it seems you are implying, then why do so many of their shows cause viewers to have an either "love it" or "hate it" response?
It was different and some different we need so I liked it.
I've posted what I thought in the forums so in short I liked it.
Oddly enough I like it. When I watched it all I could think is it looked like Invader Zim in art style. I found myself chuckling quite a bit. I don't see how someone couldn't laugh at a crap monster... Oh well, I like it myself so I'll be watching it.
I was thoroughly entertained by the 1st episode. I wouldn't use "great" to describe it, because I don't think it's trying to be, but it was one thrill ride from beginning to end.

That said, although I think it was an entertaining episode, I don't want 12 more episodes (or however many is scheduled) with the same formula. Over-the-top animation without substance can only get you so far. Also I agree it needs more sources of comedy delivery. The 1st ep relied just a bit too heavily on Panty's sexual deviance.
Everything about this show is very over the top, crazy and not afraid to say dirties of jokes. While some people may not get it at first, I say GAINAX was willing to do anything with this and I liked it.

For the people who may not get it, try not to take this type of show too seriously.
lmao I see why people would hate this show, even I was unsure if I would like it, and watched the first ep just to see if I'd give it a chance.

Loved it ^^ I'm watching it for sure this season.
Well, I for one love the art style and thought is was pretty funny. Since I loved the older Cartoon Network shows and Invader Zim, the art style just brought a kind of nostalgia back. Though, I am kinda afraid it might become old if they use the same jokes too often.
@Mike LeChevallier

I'm with Dragonzigg.. Gainax bounce anyone? They have been instrumental in defining new ways of bringing about fan service for years I do not think it was all unintentional.

As for the first episode the animation definitely had some high points as pointed out in this post. The screen shots here have them covered pretty well. The rest I could take it or leave it. Its consistent and smooth I just don't like the way it looks. I could go on and try and define what it is that bothers me about it but I don't want to risk turning this thread into a hate flame on western animation(as it nearly did last time I posted on the topic) so I will just leave it at I don't care for it.

The art is still the biggest turn off for me but beyond that I won't be watching because of the content I simply didn't find this show to be funny. It felt like every gag revolved around Panty being a hoe and it was old by the second time it came up imo.

I am overall unimpressed although this never really appealed to me to begin with. I won't be watching more.
@Lifesong

In the top 10 list of studios known for delivering fan-service, you would not find GAINAX. I'm done defending them. Wait. Is delivering fan-service a negative thing?

Also, for the art complainers: http://web1.twitpic.com/img/171655560-e157172bf9892a3349b3879c466f4ed8.4ca806c8-full.jpg
I enjoyed the first episode. I'm looking forward to the rest of the show. Only thing i didn't like was the crap monster, but everything else was great. If the monsters aren't gonna be literally crap anymore, i'll be happy.
So far I like it, but admit to most of the faults people have said. I'll also love it for the fact that it is so polarizing. Everyone is out to hate it with a passion or love it for the animation. This show will make this season glorious.
@Mike LeChevallier I don't think anyone is complaining about the fan service specifically here but what you said is confusing. If we are talking about a top 10 list of companies who have served in defining fan service I would certainly expect to see Gainax on that list.(if not at the top of it)
Bottom line, in my opinion, I don't think GAINAX is a fan-service company. They do what the hell they want, however the hell they want to; they don't set out on projects with the ultimate goal of feeding the frantic masses with pieces that are designed, from inception, to be crowd-pleasers from all angles (the very definition of fan-service). I don't know how I'm being confusing in what I'm trying to say here.
I enjoyed the first episode, and I look forward to more. When I first saw the art style for this Series, I wanted it to work. And it does, really well. I don't expect much in terms of groundbreaking story, but then again, that's not really what this looks to be going for.

Also, I really dig the ED Song.
Transformation song, original mix:

I think people might be taking this show far too seriously.
Let me preface by saying that you generally don't watch western animation (Zim, PPG, Dexters Lab, ect) with any sort of judgment about the monster or problem of the week because they last 15 minutes then you don't have to deal with it again. You don't judge how "revolutionary" the art or style is because the show establishes its own artistic base then can slide in and out of styles from episode to episode as it pleases for comedic or plot/stylistic effect or as a parody/homage to other works.
You mostly watch western animation for mindless entertainment and a few laughs.

Gainax set out to make a western style animated TV show in the vein of the late 90s to early 00s Cartoon Network/Nick and in that regard they succeeded fantastically. Assuming you kept an open mind and little in terms of expectation for plot and exposition like you might for some of the above shows, then you probably had a great time watching it like I did.

I guess its best not to think of this show as a typical anime, rather think of it as a western animated TV show that follows the classic conventions of old Cartoon Network, but that grew up with us and got an injection of crass/ mature/and outright sex humor along the way.
This entire show is a parody/homage of that style and if you missed that then I'm guessing you probably never liked the 'classics' much to begin with.
That transformation sequence and subsequent live action shot was amazing. It really charmed me with flourishes like that. I certainly hope that they keep it up and keep it fresh. Switching up the art style and being somewhat self-aware can help a very straight-forward action anime gain its own personality and really shine. I applaud this first effort from right out of the gate!
The ending song was awesome. Pretty much the whole soundtrack was off the wall fantastic. Can't wait for more.
several people are saying "you take the show too seriously", but I don't agree with that...

if you don't like something, that doesn't automatically mean you're taking it too seriously--

it means you simply don't like it
@Mike LeChevallier I think its crazy to state that Gainax does not put fan pleasers in its work intentionally. But putting that aside selling out and the goal of a company have little to do with the labels that get attached to a work. By your definition "fan service" would not even exist in anime as most of the Ecchi titles that are produced are aimed at a niche market and not aimed at the "frantic masses" at all if the masses where to get a hold of say Strike Witches I highly doubt everyone would be pleased. The only difference with Gainax is that more people are watching. And so Gainax titles become more polarized. This is why I said you where confusing.
There have been like 3 or 4 discussions on the show on Japanator alone so I'll keep things short.

I genuinely enjoyed it, and here is why: I loved Western cartoons as a kid and Gainax has created something that is truly a twisted hybrid of the best offerings of both anime and Western animation, and that's something I can appreciate. It also has some wildly great animation which just totally works with the bold and unique artstyle.

I can understand why people wouldn't like Panty and Stocking, it has quite a few tiny faults that could potentially become huge if not addressed. But as for now, Panty and Stocking is shaping up to be a fun and entertaining show, and I would expect no less from Gainax.
Judging from the first episode, this show is both inane and hilarious.
Fun stuff and unapologetic about whatever it does. Hope it can stay that way and doesn't start hurling slurs like whore and slut at Panty just 'cause she enjoys sex.

But do they have to call my girls bitches so often? D:
I'm a big proponent of the stylistic variation this show is presenting, but I wasn't much impressed with the package as a whole. The writing is too forced and "shock value"-ey. I guess I should have expected as much from the director of Dead Leaves, granted.

Hopefully the show will take after western animation in more ways than style; Most shows start out a bit rough around the edges, but find what works along the way and end up a lot stronger than they started.
@Mike LeChevallier

Is Gainax "fanservice anime company"? Of course not. Gainax has made consistently high quality shows. However, they don't shy away from fanservice. There's no reason to. And they do it in a way that doesn't take away from the impact of the show.

Gunbuster (1988): I remember the girls tight space outfits and the bath scene in space. But it was also very serious sci-fi (hard sci-fi, with real physics).
Otaku no Video (1991): A very interesting "mockumentary" about otaku mixed with animation.
Evangelion (1995): Made fun how much fanservice it was providing in many (all?) next episode previews, but was undoubtedly one of the most important anime of that decade (and beyond).
He is My Master (2005): Loli maid fanservice every episode. Was also funny and entertaining.

Wikipedia just reminded me that Gainax made their own Evangelion Strip Mahjong game. How's that for fanservice?
I like the crazy cartoon style animation and the naughty shit that goes with it. I didn't find the dirty humor that funny but more charming instead. The scenes were just nice to look at. The music was real catchy and also added to the nostalgia of old cartoons. I'm really liking that ed and it was a bit sad and creepy yet groovy the way it showed how they could have died and became angels.
That transformation scene will be stuck in my head for years to come and the raining police cars scene was also nice. Overall I think Gainax pulled off the first episode pretty well.
